Part 9

Chapter 9: The Intellectual Leak and the Mustard Banner
The air in Unit 4 had turned from humid to toxic. Pratap had arrived with a retinue of "Efficiency Consultants"—men in charcoal-grey suits who moved through the rows of sewing machines like vultures measuring a carcass. They carried tablets that tracked every "non-productive movement."
Maya sat at Station 42, wearing her new lavender cotton saree. The fabric was soft, but the atmosphere was jagged. Beside her, Anjali stood tall in a starched mustard-yellow cotton saree with a black geometric print, her face a mask of controlled fury.
"Effective immediately," Pratap announced over the PA system, "we are implementing the '2-Minute Hydration Rule.' Any unit spending more than 2 minutes at the water station per shift will have their daily productivity bonus docked by 20%. Excellence requires sacrifice."
A roar of indignation rippled through the floor, but it was quickly silenced by the glint of the security guards' batons. Anjali stepped forward, her mustard saree looking like a banner of defiance.
"Pratap-sir! The temperature on this floor is 39°C! You are asking for heatstroke! The girls aren't machines!"
"They are units of production, Anjali," Pratap sneered, tapping his tablet. "And units don't need breaks. If you can't manage them, I’ll find a manager who can. Perhaps someone who isn't so... sentimental."
Maya stopped her scissors. She didn't look up, but her voice cut through the hum of the factory like a surgical laser.
"The 2023 Vastra-Tech Operational Manual, Section 4, Paragraph 9," Maya said, her voice a low, gravelly rasp that forced everyone to freeze.
Pratap walked toward Station 42, his expensive leather shoes clicking on the oil-stained concrete. "What did you say, thread-cutter?"
Maya stood up, her lavender saree pulled tight across her shoulders. She didn't whisper now. She used the logic of the man who had built the empire. "The manual, which is a legally binding annexure to the factory’s insurance bond, states that 'Thermal Regulation' of the workforce is a mandatory operational cost. It specifically prohibits the docking of wages for hydration in these environments. If you enforce this, you are in Tier-1 violation of the Central Labor Act. The factory’s liability coverage will be voided instantly, and the Board will be personally liable for any health-related litigation."
The consultants looked at their tablets, their faces turning pale. "She’s right," one whispered. "The 'Reddy Clause.' Arnav put it in himself to avoid a class-action suit in 2022."
Pratap leaned in close, the scent of his expensive cologne a sickening contrast to the lint. "Where did a girl from the chawl learn to quote my cousin’s private manuals?"
"I read," Maya whispered, her eyes dropping back to the white shirt in her hand. "And I listen."
That night, the chawl was plunged into a heavy, humid darkness by a power cut. Anjali entered Maya’s room, her mustard saree looking like molten gold in the flickering light of the clay diya.
