The Home Coming
Six months drifted by like pages turning in a beautifully written book.
The rhythm of Rajani’s life settled into a steady, comforting hum. There were the grueling hybrid shifts, the choking Pune traffic, the ritualistic pinning of the different stoles / scarves, and the weekend battles against house dust. But the center of her universe had completely shifted toward Rani.
Through their endless dinners, shopping trips, and late-night conversations, Rajani watched Rani closely. She observed how seamlessly Rani shouldered the heavy financial burdens of her family—managing medical bills, tracking expenses, and planning for the future—all while maintaining that vibrant, infectious smile. Rani never complained, never made her responsibilities feel like a tragic martyrdom, and never cried about the hand she had been dealt. For Rajani, who had once broken down under the exact same pressure as a guy, this was a profound revelation. She realized that strength didn't belong to a specific gender; it belonged to a resilient soul. With every passing day, her deep respect and love for Rani magnified, and in return, Rani’s protective, flirtatious affection deepened into a fierce, unwavering devotion. They were two corporate warriors anchored entirely to each other.
Then, the universe decided to throw another wrench into the fabric of reality.
A new marriage proposal arrived for Rajjo. By a bizarre stroke of cosmic coincidence, the prospective groom's family turned out to be distant relatives of Rani’s family. The pressure from home instantly spiked. *“Rajjo, they are very rich people, and since they are related to Rani and her family, the background check is already done! You must come home this weekend,”* her mother commanded over the phone.
When Rajani frantically dialed Rani to vent, Rani didn't laugh it off this time. Her voice was steady, a sharp glint of determination in her tone. *“Don't panic, Rajjo. My family is also invited to the same function this weekend. I’m coming with you. We will face this together.”*

The New Couple on the Move
The journey from Pune to Kolhapur was a cocoon of shared nerves. Both girls boarded the state transport AC bus completely locked into their classic "Pune wrap" uniform—stoles tightly bound over their heads, noses and mouths, sunglasses shielding their eyes from the harsh highway sun. They sat side-by-side in the cramped seats, their hands tightly locked beneath a shared shawl, communicating through subtle squeezes whenever the anxiety peaked.
By the time their auto-rickshaw sputtered into the familiar, tree-lined lanes of Rajani's childhood neighborhood in Kolhapur, the afternoon heat was oppressive.
The auto rattled to a halt right outside the Patil household. Rajani’s heart did a violent, familiar dance against her ribs. She stepped out onto the asphalt, her white trousers and pastel kurti slightly wrinkled from the long journey. Right behind her stepped Rani, adjusting her laptop bag and pulling down her colorful stole to take a deep breath of the hometown air.
Two modern girls, fiercely independent, and carrying a massive secret, stood on the threshold of the traditional world they had left behind.
"Ready?" Rani whispered, her bright brown eyes locking onto Rajani’s flustered face, offering that signature, grounding smile that always made Rajani’s masculine soul and feminine heart feel completely safe.
Rajani pulled the stole below her chin, took a deep, stabilizing breath, and nodded. "Ready."
They walked up the porch steps together, the sound of the front door creaking open echoing like the start of a final, decisive chapter.
