Part 6
The Mall Whirlwind
The girl charging toward Rajani with open arms was Rani.
As the name registered, a double exposure of memories flared in Rajani’s mind. In the old reality, Rani was the girl next door—the inseparable shadow of his childhood and teenage years until her family had to quietly move away due to financial hardships. He remembered her vividly: fiercely enthusiastic, a little dominant, with a golden heart, masking her family's struggles with an unbreakable smile. They had harbored mutual, deeply buried crushes on each other, a secret neither had ever dared to voice to avoid complicating things between their families.
But in *this* reality, the script had been entirely rewritten.
Before Rajani could even formulate a greeting, Rani crashed into her, wrapping her in a tight, lavender-scented hug. "Rajjo! It’s been ages! Look at you, you cute, gorgeous and sexy girl!" Rani pulled back, her eyes scanning Rajani’s face, lingering just a bit too long on her dark eyes and soft jawline.
For Rajani, the internal friction was immediate. Her brain was screaming *'That's Rani, the girl you used to stare at during power cuts!'* while her body was frozen in the embrace of another woman.
"R-Rani! Hi!" Rajani stammered, her voice pitching slightly higher in her nervousness.
"Don't 'Hi' me, you ghost!" Rani chided, playfully grabbing Rajani’s arm. "You got a big-shot IT job and completely forgot your favorite neighbor? Come on, you are coming with me right now. No excuses."
What followed was a whirlwind afternoon that left Rajani completely off-balance. Rani was a single child, carrying the heavy weight of her family’s financial responsibilities just like Rajjo. Yet, as they walked through the mall and ended up at a café, Rajani watched Rani talk about her grueling freelance design work and her parents' medical bills—all with that same vibrant, infectious smile. It struck a deep chord. Just two nights ago, he had cried to God about the exact same burden. Seeing Rani shoulder it so gracefully as a woman made Rajani feel a profound sense of respect—and a strange, comforting solidarity.
But the emotional resonance was constantly hijacked by sheer, unadulterated awkwardness.
Because history had shifted, Rani didn't see her childhood boy-crush; she saw a beautiful, relatable girl. And free from the traditional constraints of guy-girl dynamics, Rani’s dominant, confident personality took over.
"You know, Rajjo," Rani murmured, leaning across the café table, propping her chin on her hand as she watched Rajani struggle to neatly eat a slice of cheesecake, "you've grown up beautifully. Those eyes... the boys in your office must be blind if you're still single."
Rajani almost choked on her cake. "Uh, no, no. Just... focused on the project. Restructuring, you know," she lied, her cheeks burning a bright crimson.
"Good," Rani said, a small, playful smirk playing on her lips. "More time for me, then."
The entire day felt like walking a tightrope. Rani dragged her from clothing stores to cosmetic sections, holding Rajani’s hand to pull her through the crowds—a gesture that sent completely confusing, electric jolts straight to Rajani’s core. Every time Rani leaned in to whisper a sarcastic comment about a passerby, or adjusted Rajani’s stole for her, Rajani’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
By the time they wrapped up a late-night dinner at a nearby rooftop restaurant, Rajani was physically and mentally spent. Rani reluctantly let her go, extracting a firm promise that they would meet again next weekend.

The Late-Night Echoes
It was past 11:30 PM when Rajani finally unlocked the front door of her flat. The apartment was dark and quiet. She kicked off her flats, dropped her purse, and immediately unhooked her bra beneath her kurti, letting out a long, exhausted groan of pure relief.
She collapsed onto the bed, the silence of the room allowing the reality of the day to finally sink in. She felt a deep warmth from reconnecting with Rani, but the sheer nervousness of the new dynamic had left her dizzy.
*Bzzzz.*
The phone screen lit up on the mattress beside her.
> **Rani:** *Reached home safe, Rajjo? Today was magical. I honestly can't stop thinking about how pretty you looked in that green kurti. Seriously, you're distracting me from my deadlines. 😉*

Rajani stared at the glowing text, her fingers hovering over the keyboard.
Her internal identity was still entirely that of a heterosexual guy, a soul that had loved Rani from afar for years. But now, she was trapped in a feminine frame, and Rani was throwing playful, distinctly flirtatious signals—not at the boy from the past, but at the woman she was now. A girly crush from her oldest friend was a variable Rajani had never, in her wildest dreams, anticipated.
If she shut it down too harshly, she risked losing the only anchor to her childhood she had left. If she played along, she was entering entirely uncharted, deceptive waters.
Staring at the ceiling as the city night hummed outside, Rajani rubbed her temples, the corporate Jira tickets completely forgotten. *'Bappa,'* she thought, a bewildered smile tugging at her lips, *'I asked for a break from the tension, but I don't think this is what either of us had in mind.'*
