Part 35

Grandmother, Who, Me?

Chapter 35: Six Years Later

The village house looked almost the same.

The tulsi plant in the courtyard had grown thicker. The jasmine on the wall flowered more heavily each summer. Inside, the wooden furniture had darkened with age, and the framed wedding photograph of Lakshmi and Rajan still hung in its place on the living-room wall, the colours only slightly faded.

Shreya sat on the floor with her six-year-old daughter, a thick family album open between them. The child, small and bright-eyed, turned the pages carefully. There were photographs of a newborn in a hospital bassinet, then the same baby in the arms of a soft-faced woman in a cotton saree, a thali visible at her neck. Father-in-law, mother-in-law, son, and new mother ,the complete family captured in image after image.

“What happened to Paati?” the little girl asked, pointing at the woman in the saree.

Shreya’s hand rested briefly on the photograph. Her voice stayed gentle.

“She went to meet God, kanna. A long time ago.”

The child was quiet for a moment. “What was she like?”

Before Shreya could answer, Rajan came in from the veranda, wiping chalk dust from his hands. He had continued the tuition work all these years; the village still called him Master. He looked at the open album, then at the small girl, and smiled the quiet smile of a man who had kept certain truths safely inside.

“She was the most beautiful and perfect woman I ever knew,” he said simply.

The child studied the photographs again, then looked up at the doorway where Satish had just appeared. She tilted her head.

“Appa and Paati look very similar.”

Satish stepped into the room, the same lean frame, the same soft features, only a little older. He sat on the floor beside his daughter and touched the edge of one of the old pictures.

“We were very close,” he said. “That’s why we named you Lakshmi. You should be just as close to your mother.”

The little girl accepted the answer the way children do, already turning the page to the next set of photographs. Shreya watched her husband for a moment longer. Something unspoken passed between them ,gratitude, residual guilt, a complicated peace. Then the ordinary evening continued: dinner, the child’s chatter, the slow settling of the house into night.

Much later, when the others were asleep, a soft chime of anklets moved through the dark courtyard.

Rajan was in the small stable at the back, checking the latch on the storage door the way he did every night. He did not turn when the footsteps stopped behind him. He already knew the sound.

She stood in the moonlight in a simple cotton saree, the weathered thali resting in the familiar place between her breasts, the toe rings glinting faintly. The same soft face. The same heavy, motherly body. The same quiet scent of rose and skin.

Lakshmi.

They did not speak at first. He simply opened his arms, and she stepped into them. The kiss was slow and deep, the kind that carried six years of secret understanding. His hands found the familiar weight of her breasts, the curve of her waist, the place where the saree was already loosening. She made a low sound against his mouth and pressed closer.

After the original transformation had finally been reversed, something irreversible had remained. Satish could look at any woman including his own wife and feel nothing. The old desire was simply gone. Only this body, only this man, could still wake it. So a few times a year, when the need grew too strong, the process was repeated in secret for a single night. Jessica’s remaining contacts still worked. The suit of soft flesh and the locked cage and the thali were put on again. By morning the woman would be gone, and Satish would return to the city house as if nothing had happened.

Tonight was one of those nights.

They moved into the deeper shadow of the stable. The saree fell away. The blouse followed. Soon she was naked except for the thali that still hung between her breasts and the anklets that chimed softly whenever she shifted. He took her against the rough wooden wall the way he had taken her so many times before, thoroughly, possessively, with the quiet gratitude of a man who had once lost everything and been given one impossible season of ordinary happiness.

Afterwards they lay on the folded sacks he kept for the purpose. Her head rested on his chest. His fingers traced idle patterns on the soft skin of her hip. Outside, the village was completely still. Above them the sky was thick with stars.

Lakshmi or the part of Satish that still lived inside this shape stared up at the bright scatter of light and spoke the old question one final time, almost too softly to hear.

“Grandmother… who, me?”

The night gave no answer.

Only the distant sound of a temple bell, and the warm weight of a husband’s arm across a waist that would belong to someone else again by morning.

Congratulations!

Unbelievably amazing...the shifts in presenting diff povs in chronological order makes this so effective and pleasant. Believe me this is one of the or should say the best story I have read in the last 5-6 years. You are a magician with this story. Gosh the fluidity in emotions and the integrity in characters made it more of noble than fantasy. Truly waiting for more...💕

Also everytime i decide to post, i try my best to post the entire story as I don't like leaving ppl yearning and guessing. Hence I'll post all the parts within today itself. But I can't promise immediately posting the other titles as they still need completed, proof checked and for that it's completely depended on my mood 👉👈
