Chapter 12: Irreversible
Moonlight cut a hard line across the bronze mirror. Chandrika stood naked in front of it and did not look away.
She had woken an hour earlier with the familiar urge and walked to the chamber pot the way she always had. Mid-step the knowledge arrived: there was nothing left to hold. Her penis which was 2 inches before,is now gone. Completely gone. She sat. Quiet in shock. The sound was different. The feeling was different. When she wiped, her fingers found only smooth, slightly swollen flesh and a narrow opening that was still soft and unfinished at the edges.
She stayed on the pot longer than she needed to, staring at the floor tiles.
Now, in front of the mirror, she cupped one breast out of habit. The weight was real, the nipple already tight from the night air, but her eyes kept dropping lower. The place between her legs no longer looked like anything she had ever owned. A smooth mound and the new opening, still pinker than the rest of her skin, still a little puffy from whatever the Rasayana and the last fever had finished while she slept.
She touched it with two fingers, careful.
It was warm. Wetter than she expected. The outer lips parted easily; deeper in, the tissue was thinner, almost delicate, and the first careful press made her hips jerk. She tried again, slower, circling the small raised bud at the top the way Kiran had once shown her on her own body. The sensation was sharp and immediate, nothing like the old slow build. Her knees weakened. She caught the edge of the table with her free hand and kept going, curious and half-sick at the same time.
It did not take long.
The orgasm arrived fast and almost violent, a hard clench that forced a broken sound out of her throat. Her legs folded. She ended up on the floor, one hand still between her thighs, the other braced on the cool stone, breathing like she had run. The wetness on her fingers smelled different now — cleaner, thinner. She stared at it until the shaking stopped.
“I’m gone,” she said aloud, but the words came out soft and flat, almost conversational. The musical voice no longer surprised her. That was worse.
Kiran found her there.
She did not speak at first. She simply knelt, draped the heavy cedar-smelling shawl around Chandrika’s shoulders, and waited until the younger woman’s breathing evened.
“You sat,” Kiran said finally. Not a question.
Chandrika nodded once. “Had to.”
Kiran’s hand settled on the back of her neck, warm and steady. “I know. Mine finished two nights ago. Same quiet. Same shock when you reach for something that isn’t there anymore.”
They stayed on the floor. Outside, the first wedding drums started in the lower courtyard — slow, testing beats. Chandrika leaned her forehead against Kiran’s shoulder.
“I tried to touch it the way I used to,” she said. “It just… answered too fast. Like the body already knows the rules and I don’t.”
Kiran’s laugh was quiet and rough. “Welcome to the new rules.”
Later, when Chandrika could stand again, Kiran helped her onto the bed. The shawl fell away. This time the exploration was shared. Kiran’s mouth stayed gentle on her breasts only long enough to make the nipples tighten; then she moved lower, parted the new folds with careful thumbs, and licked once, slow and flat. Chandrika’s hips lifted off the mattress on pure reflex. The second stroke of tongue sent her over again, quicker than before, a short, helpless cry she tried to muffle against her own wrist.
Kiran did not stop. She kept the pressure light, learning the new shape the same way they had once learned sword forms together — by feel, by paying attention to what made the other person shake. When Chandrika pulled her up, they ground against each other with none of the earlier elegance, just the need to be close while the body finished rewriting itself. The second shared climax left them both damp and quiet.
Afterward Chandrika lay on her side, one hand resting protectively over the still-tender place between her legs.
“No going back,” she said. It was not dramatic. It was simply true.
Kiran’s fingers traced the line of her spine. “I know.”
Outside the door, Leela stood with one palm flat against the wood. She had heard enough. She did not knock. She only stayed there until the soft sounds inside settled into silence, then walked away down the empty corridor with her face carefully blank.
Three days later the Festival of Lamps filled the palace ponds with floating clay lights. Chandrika walked the paths with Kiran half a step behind, accepting sweets, nodding to children. Leela watched from the pavilion and smiled into her tea the way mothers do when the worst has already happened and the living are still standing.
That night Chandrika sat on the edge of the bed and looked at the mirror one more time. The reflection looked back, calm, complete, irreversible. She did not flinch.
She simply turned away and blew out the lamp.
