Chapter 20 - Long Hair Love
Six months later, the alarm rang at seven-thirty.

Ishawari opened one eye, silenced it, and remained under the sheet for another minute.

From the hall, Ritika called, "If you miss the morning call, do not blame your hair."

Ishawari sat up.

Her hair had become the easiest thing in the flat to blame.

It covered the pillow, caught beneath her shoulder, and sometimes found its way inside the collar of her night T-shirt. When she stood, the longest sections rested several inches below her shoulders.

She loved all of it.

The supported medical care continued through regular follow-ups and informed choices. The changes were slow. Her face had become softer, her waist remained slimmer, and the feminine clothes in her cupboard now fitted a body that felt increasingly like hers.

Nothing happened through an unmarked packet anymore.

Ishawari knew what she was taking, why she was taking it, and what choices remained ahead.

She also knew that medicine was only one part of her life.

This morning, the urgent problem was tea.

She tied her hair into a loose ponytail and entered the kitchen in a long sleep T-shirt and soft leggings.

Ritika was placing two cups on the counter.

"Your hair is in the sugar tin," she said.

Ishawari moved the ponytail over her shoulder.

"No, it is not."

"It was considering it."

"My hair has standards."

"Your hair was once visible only as five tiny strands in an enlarged photograph."

Ishawari gave her a warning look.

"We agreed not to discuss that photograph before tea."

Ritika laughed.

The flat had changed in small, practical ways.

Hair ties rested in a bowl near the dining table. Tic-tac clips appeared beside the television remote and inside Ishawari's laptop bag. Her kurtis occupied most of one cupboard shelf, and her bangles had their own box instead of borrowing space from Ritika's.

The changes in responsibility were just as visible.

Ishawari planned groceries with Ritika, cooked twice a week, and no longer behaved like a temporary guest who needed to be reminded where the clean plates belonged. If work made one of them late, the other managed dinner.

They were sisters sharing a home, not one person managing it for both.

After tea, Ishawari went to her room to prepare for an office day.

She still worked from home most of the week. Once or twice a month, she chose to go in. The first bounded day had grown into an ordinary pattern at her pace.

Her name in the office systems was Ishawari. Colleagues used she and her. Mistakes still happened occasionally, especially with people who had not met her for months, but they were corrected without turning every conversation into a debate.

No public post had been made.

No office celebration photograph carried her face.

Naina and Priya continued to ask before sharing anything that included her, even inside private groups.

The boundary still belonged to Ishawari.

She chose a pale green kurti for the day. Its colour reminded her of the used kurti in which Ritika had once found her asleep, though this one was new and entirely hers.

She wore it with white leggings and small silver earrings. Light kajal and rose lipstick completed the face. She left the bangles in their box because a full day of typing would be easier without them.

Her hair took longer.

Ishawari first tried a headband, removed it, and placed two tic-tac clips on the table.

Ritika passed the open bedroom door.

"Both clips and a headband again?"

Ishawari looked at her through the mirror.

"I am testing options."

"You tested that option months ago."

The memory brought back a Sunday morning at the dining table, when Ritika had combed both front sections backwards and shown her that the clips could hold the hair without closing it away.

Ishawari removed the headband.

She brushed the front hair backwards towards each side and fixed it above the ears with two matching black clips. The longer sections remained open over her shoulders and down her back.

She shook her head.

The hair moved freely from the sides, but none fell into her eyes.

Open but controlled.

She smiled.

Ritika leaned against the door.

"Still your favourite?"

"Always."

"You look cute."

Ishawari turned from the mirror.

"Is it really not looking bad?"

Ritika stared at her.

"You have gone to the office like this many times."

"That does not answer the question."

"It looks cute."

Ishawari picked up her bag.

"I like the feeling more."

"I know."

The office lift was crowded that morning.

Ishawari stood between Naina and Priya while two other colleagues discussed lunch plans. Her pale green kurti was visible in the mirror, and her long hair shifted over her shoulders each time the lift stopped.

She did not look away.

Priya noticed one front section loosening.

"Your left clip is moving."

Ishawari adjusted it without embarrassment.

"Better?"

"Better."

Naina said, "You carry four spare clips but never use them before the emergency."

"That is why they are emergency clips."

The doors opened.

They walked out together.

The day contained no important first.

Ishawari joined two meetings, helped Priya untangle an issue before lunch, and complained when Naina took the last good cup from the pantry. A new colleague introduced herself without hesitation.

"Hi, I am Meera."

"Ishawari."

"Nice to meet you."

That was all.

In the evening, Ishawari returned home tired and hungry.

She changed from the pale green kurti into the maroon one Ritika had given her after the medical check. It had become softer with washing. The cloth no longer carried Ritika's perfume or the excitement of something borrowed in secret.

It carried Ishawari's own scent and the familiarity of home.

She removed her makeup but kept her hair clipped on both sides.

Ritika was at the dining table sorting vegetables.

"You are cooking today," she said.

"I know."

"I am confirming because you changed into a kurti and looked ready to sit."

"A woman can wear a kurti and cut vegetables."

"This woman can start with the onions."

Ishawari sat beside her and reached for the knife.

Her phone lit up with a message from their private chat.

**Priya:** Did her emergency clip survive the cab?

**Naina:** More importantly, did she remember that dinner is her responsibility?

Ishawari placed the phone where Ritika could see it.

"They have become too comfortable."

"You invited them into the circle."

"I can remove them."

"No, you cannot. They know too much."

Ishawari laughed and began cutting the onions.

Later, after dinner, she stood before the narrow mirror beside the cupboard.

The woman looking back at her wore a maroon kurti, no makeup, and two ordinary black clips. Her long hair flowed around her shoulders. Her body was still changing, but the reflection no longer felt like a question she had to answer that night.

She was Ishawari at home.

She was Ishawari at work.

Who knew beyond those places, what medical steps came next, and how publicly she would live in the future remained under her control.

Ritika passed behind her carrying two cups of tea.

"Move your hair," she said. "It will fall into the cup."

Ishawari brought the long sections forward over one shoulder.

"Happy?"

"For now."

They sat at the dining table.

Ishawari touched one tic-tac clip and remembered the first frightened hope that had begun near her temple.

She had wanted hair long enough to protect the crown.

Then she had wanted it long enough to clip back.

Then long enough to move beside a kurti, brush her shoulders, and frame the feminine face she was learning to love.

Now it had grown beyond every early plan.

Ishawari lifted her tea carefully.

Her hair remained open.

Her clips held it exactly where she wanted.

And for the first time, nothing about that simple reflection felt temporary.

Congratulations!
