Part 29

At the end of the week, the semester results were announced.
Archana had been waiting for them all morning.
She refreshed the result page twice.
Then again.
Her fingers trembled as she entered her registration details.
The result appeared.
She stared at the screen.
For a few seconds, she didn't understand what she was seeing.
Then she counted.
One.
Two.
Three.
She kept going.
All nineteen papers.
Cleared.
Not merely passed.
The marks were good.
Some were much better than she had expected.
Archana leaned back in her chair.
She had done it.
Nineteen papers that had once looked impossible.
She immediately took a screenshot.
Then she opened WhatsApp.
The old group was still there.
The same group name.
The same four names.
And, technically, the same Arjun.
Her official college records still carried his real name and roll number. "Archana" was only the name everyone used for her during this disciplinary period.
She posted the screenshot.
Then added:
😂😂😂
Within seconds, the group exploded.
Rohit:
WHAT???
Vikram:
19/19????
Karthik:
Who are you and what have you done with Arjun? 😂
Archana laughed.
The first real laugh she'd had in days.
Rohit:
Bro became girl and suddenly discovered books.
Vikram:
Apparently saree improves memory.
Karthik:
We should have made you study like this years ago.
Archana typed back.
Archana:
Shut up, idiots 😂
They immediately celebrated.
There were victory emojis.
Clapping emojis.
Ridiculous GIFs.
More teasing.
But this time something felt completely different.
There was no cruelty in it.
No stranger was laughing at her.
No one was trying to make her feel small.
These were the three people who had known Arjun before everything changed.
They knew his arrogance.
They knew his stupidity.
They knew his generosity.
They knew the person behind the punishment.
And, more importantly, they knew that Archana was still their friend.
They teased her exactly the way they always had.
Without filters.
Without pity.
Without treating her like something fragile.
For the first time in months, Archana didn't have to wonder what anyone meant.
She knew.
These were her friends.
After several minutes of congratulations and jokes, Archana typed:
Archana:
Okay idiots. Remember cultural programme.
The replies came immediately.
Vikram:
How can we forget?
Karthik:
We are waiting.
Rohit:
What's the plan?
Archana hesitated before typing.
Archana:
I'm practicing Bharatanatyam with Prakash's mother.
There was a brief pause.
Then:
Rohit:
WHAT????
Vikram:
YOU???
Karthik:
Classical dance????
Archana laughed.
Archana:
Yes.
Rohit:
As Archana???
Archana:
Yes.
The messages started coming rapidly.
How is that even possible?
Bro is actually going to perform Bharatanatyam?
You're serious?
Prakash finally entered the conversation.
Prakash:
Guys, trust me.
Everyone stopped.
Prakash:
She's actually doing very well.
Rohit:
You are saying this because your mother is teaching her.
Prakash:
I'm saying it because I've seen her practice.
He continued.
Prakash:
She has learned the foundations surprisingly quickly.
Prakash:
Adavus, rhythm, posture, expressions, hand gestures.
Prakash:
She's not a beginner anymore.
Prakash:
Give her a little more time and she'll be better than many people who casually perform classical dance at college events.
Archana stared at the screen.
That meant more to her than she expected.
She typed:
Archana:
The dancing isn't the problem.
Karthik:
Then what is?
Archana:
The committee doesn't want only classical.
Vikram:
What do they want?
Archana paused.
Then typed:
Archana:
They want an entertainment number.
There was another explosion.
Rohit:
WHAT KIND OF ENTERTAINMENT?
Archana:
Basically a film dance.
Karthik:
Oh no.
Vikram:
😂
Archana continued.
Archana:
So I'm doing two songs.
Rohit:
Which ones?
Archana:
Radhai Manathil.
Everyone approved immediately.
Then she added:
Archana:
And Ra Ra Rakkamma — Telugu version.
The group went silent for a second.
Then:
Rohit:
BRO.
Vikram:
YOU'RE ACTUALLY DOING THAT???
Karthik:
How are you going to pull that off?
Archana smiled.
Archana:
Practice.
Vikram:
That's not what he means.
Archana knew exactly what he meant.
Her body.
Her face.
The difficulty of making the second performance convincing.
One of them finally typed:
Karthik:
But seriously... how?
Then another message appeared.
Karthik:
Even if you dance perfectly, you don't have the physical features people associate with a female performer. Won't that make it more humiliating?
Archana stared at the message.
For a moment, the old insecurity returned.
Then Rohit replied.
Rohit:
Leave it to me.
Nobody understood.
Vikram:
What?
Rohit:
I said leave it to me.
Karthik:
What are you planning?
Rohit:
Nothing crazy.
A pause.
Rohit:
We need the right costume.
Another message.
Rohit:
Professional makeup.
Another.
Rohit:
Proper stage preparation.
Another.
Rohit:
We can use professional costume shaping and stage padding where appropriate, so the silhouette works under the lights.
Archana read the message twice.
Rohit continued.
Rohit:
We'll get someone who actually knows stage makeup.
Rohit:
Not some random college guy with a lipstick.
Vikram laughed.
Vikram:
Okay, that I agree with.
Karthik added:
Karthik:
He's serious.
Prakash finally wrote:
Prakash:
If you're arranging all that, please don't tell my mother anything about the second song.
Archana immediately replied:
Archana:
Exactly.
Prakash:
She'll kill me if she thinks I'm helping you prepare for that song.
Everyone laughed.
Then Rohit sent one final message.
Rohit:
Trust me.
Rohit:
We'll make sure you look like a proper stage performer.
Rohit:
You concentrate on dancing.
Rohit:
We'll handle everything else.
Archana stared at the screen.
She had spent months being told what to wear.
Where to go.
What to do.
What not to do.
How to behave.
How to respond to insults.
How to endure humiliation.
But this was different.
Nobody was ordering her.
Nobody was laughing at her.
Nobody was pitying her.
Her friends were simply saying:
We're here.
She typed slowly.
Archana:
Thank you, guys.
Rohit immediately replied.
Rohit:
Don't become emotional.
Vikram:
She is already crying.
Karthik:
Definitely crying.
Archana laughed again.
Archana:
I hate all of you.
Rohit:
Good.
Vikram:
That's our Arjun.
Archana stared at those words.
Our Arjun.
For a moment, she didn't feel like Archana.
She didn't feel like the disciplined student.
She didn't feel like the person everyone on campus called by humiliating names.
She was simply one of four friends sitting inside an old WhatsApp group, being teased by people who knew her before the world changed.
She smiled.
Then she typed:
Archana:
Okay. Let's do this.
And for the first time since the punishment began, the cultural programme didn't feel like another humiliation waiting to happen.
It felt like something she might actually be able to own.
