Part 40

When Archana came out of the committee room, the girl was standing a short distance away.
Archana looked at her.
The girl couldn't meet her eyes.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Archana smiled.
“Thank you.”
The girl looked up, startled.
“For what?”
“For telling the truth.”
The girl immediately looked down again.
“I'm sorry, Arjun.”
Archana paused.
The name sounded strange now.
Not because she had forgotten it.
Because she hadn't heard it spoken with that kind of sincerity in a very long time.
The girl continued.
“We misunderstood you.”
Another girl stepped forward.
“All of us.”
“We treated you terribly.”
“We kept humiliating you.”
“We thought you deserved everything that happened.”
The first girl wiped her eyes.
“I'm really sorry.”
Archana looked at them.
There was no anger on her face.
Only tiredness.
“It's okay.”
One girl shook her head.
“No. It isn't.”
Archana smiled faintly.
“Maybe not.”
She adjusted her bag.
“But let's go to class.”
The girls followed her.
The news spread through the college within minutes.
The allegation was false.
Nobody knew the details.
Nobody knew what had been confessed inside the committee room.
Nobody knew why the girl had done it.
The committee had kept that information confidential.
Archana kept silent too.
But the basic fact was enough.
She had been falsely accused.
And suddenly, students who had spent months mocking her were furious.
Especially the seniors.
The anger wasn't directed only at the girl.
Her entire department became the subject of criticism.
“How could someone make an accusation like that?”
“After everything that happened already?”
“She could have ruined Archana's life.”
“What were they thinking?”
Some students demanded that the department explain itself.
Others simply avoided the girl.
But nobody knew the real story.
Only the committee knew.
And Archana knew that the truth belonged there for now.
She wasn't going to expose it.
Lunch was the strangest part of the day.
For the first time in months, the girls came looking for her.
“Archana.”
She looked up.
“Come eat with us.”
She hesitated.
Then smiled.
“Why?”
One girl laughed awkwardly.
“Because we're asking.”
Archana picked up her lunch box.
“All right.”
They sat together.
At first nobody spoke.
The silence was almost painful.
Finally, one girl asked,
“What actually happened inside?”
Archana took a bite of food.
“The committee handled it.”
“Did they believe you?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Archana smiled.
“They asked questions.”
Another girl leaned forward.
“Did you tell them everything?”
“I told them what I knew.”
“What did the other girl say?”
Archana paused.
“She explained herself.”
“That's all?”
“That's all I can tell you.”
The girls exchanged glances.
One tried again.
“Was she punished?”
Archana shrugged.
“That's for the committee to decide.”
Another girl asked,
“Did they ask about the original ragging case?”
Archana looked at her.
“I think the committee is reviewing everything.”
That answer made them quiet.
They knew there was something more.
But Archana clearly wasn't going to tell them.
So another girl changed the subject.
“Were you scared?”
Archana thought for a moment.
“Yes.”
The girls looked at her.
“I was scared when I first heard the accusation.”
She continued eating.
“But later I wasn't.”
“Why?”
Archana looked around the table.
“Because you girls were there.”
Nobody spoke.
“You remembered where I was.”
“You remembered when I went to the restroom.”
“You were willing to speak.”
She smiled.
“That mattered.”
One girl looked down.
“We should have done that much earlier.”
Archana didn't answer.
Another girl asked quietly,
“Do you hate us?”
Archana looked at her.
“No.”
“After everything?”
“I don't have the energy to hate everyone.”
A nervous laugh passed around the table.
Then Archana added,
“And you've already apologized.”
One girl smiled.
“Does that mean we're forgiven?”
Archana pretended to think.
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
“Depends.”
“On what?”
“You stop giving me suspicious chocolate.”
Everyone laughed.
The tension finally broke.
One girl immediately said,
“Wait, you actually ate that chocolate?”
Archana looked at her suspiciously.
“How do you know?”
The table went silent.
Archana's eyes narrowed.
“You saw me?”
Nobody answered.
She slowly smiled.
“You recorded me again, didn't you?”
One girl covered her face.
“Sorry!”
Another burst out laughing.
Archana shook her head.
“You people never learn.”
“We didn't record it to humiliate you!”
“I know.”
“You looked so happy.”
Archana's expression softened.
“It was good chocolate.”
That made everyone laugh again.
Then one girl asked quietly,
“Why did you check it for holes?”
Archana looked embarrassed.
“Because of you people!”
The girls laughed.
“You've given me too many things.”
She pointed at them.
“I've learned to be careful.”
One girl looked at her.
“Did you really like the rose?”
Archana touched her hair instinctively.
“I kept it.”
The girls smiled.
Nobody teased her.
For once, they simply let her have the moment.
After lunch, Archana returned to the last row.
She opened her notebook.
The classroom slowly returned to normal.
But it wasn't really normal anymore.
Something had changed.
The girls had stopped looking at her as an object of entertainment.
They were beginning to see a person.
And Archana, despite everything, had chosen not to expose the girl's secret.
She could have told them.
She could have made herself the centre of the story.
She could have revealed what had been confessed and allowed the entire college to turn against that girl.
Instead, she said nothing.
Because the committee had entrusted her with the truth.
And perhaps that was another small sign of how much she had changed.
The old Arjun would have wanted everyone to know who had won.
Archana simply wanted the matter to end.
She opened her textbook.
The professor entered.
And the class continued.
