The cultural programme was finally over. The auditorium was still buzzing outside. Students were talking about the performances. Someone was already uploading clips. Others were arguing about which performance had been the best. But inside the preparation room, the celebration had ended for Archana. She had removed most of the stage jewellery. The elaborate costume was gone. The glittering red outfit had been replaced with her familiar half-saree. But the makeup hadn't completely disappeared. The glitter remained in places. The heavy kajal was still around her eyes. The lipstick had only partly been removed. The decorative mehndi-like paste on her hands and feet was proving much harder to clean. Her hair was still loose. She sat in the corner. And cried. Her four friends stood around her. “Archana, calm down.” “It's okay.” “We'll explain.” She shook her head. “No.” Rohit crouched beside her. “We're coming with you.” “Don't.” He looked at her. “Why?” “If you four come to my house, you'll create more trouble.” Vikram frowned. “We're not going to create trouble.” “You always create trouble.” Karthik laughed. “Not always.” Archana looked at him through tears. “You're the worst one.” He smiled. “At least I'm consistent.” She almost laughed. Then her face crumpled again. The door opened. The HOD entered. Behind her were several of the girls from Archana's class. They stopped when they saw her crying. The HOD immediately understood. “What happened?” Archana wiped her face. “Nothing, ma'am.” The HOD sat beside her. “Don't tell me nothing.” Archana looked at her friends. “They want to come home with me.” The HOD looked at the four boys. “Maybe not.” Rohit opened his mouth. The HOD raised her hand. “Listen to her.” Archana nodded. “If all four of you come, my parents will think something else has happened.” The girls exchanged looks. One asked softly, “What are you afraid of?” Archana hesitated. Then whispered: “The mehndi.” Everyone looked at her hands. “It won't come off.” She looked down at her legs. “There's still glitter everywhere.” Her voice broke. “When my parents see me like this…” She couldn't finish. The HOD put a hand on her shoulder. “Archana.” “My mother will think…” She began crying harder. “She'll think I'm doing something immoral again.” The room became silent. “She'll think I'm…” She couldn't say the word. The HOD understood. “I'll come with you.” Archana looked up. “I'll explain everything.” “But—” “No.” The HOD's voice was firm. “Your parents will hear the truth from me.” The girls immediately nodded. “We'll come too.” Archana looked frightened. “No, please.” One girl said, “We'll stay outside.” Another added, “We just want to explain.” Vikram looked at Archana. “You trust them but not us?” Archana stared at him. “Because if you four come…” Karthik interrupted. “She thinks we'll cause trouble.” Vikram grinned. “She doesn't trust us.” Archana gave him an exhausted look. “I trust you.” “Really?” “Yes.” “Then let us come.” “No.” Everyone laughed despite the tension. Then Karthik suddenly pulled out his phone. “Anyway, you're worried about the wrong thing.” Archana looked at him. “What?” He showed her the screen. Her face immediately changed. Instagram. The cultural programme. The Rakkamma performance. Someone had already uploaded a clip. The comments were multiplying. Archana watched herself on the screen. Her expression became horrified. “Oh no.” Rohit burst out laughing. She punched him lightly on the shoulder. “Why did you let them record that?” “Because it was good!” “Rohit!” “You were amazing.” She covered her face. “I don't want to see this.” Karthik laughed. “You haven't even seen what's coming.” Archana lowered her hands. “What are you planning?” Rohit smiled. “You'll see.” “Rohit…” “We haven't even started the trouble yet.” Archana stared at him suspiciously. “That's exactly what I'm afraid of.” Eventually, the HOD accompanied Archana toward home. The girls followed too. But they stayed a little behind. When they reached the house, the girls quietly slipped behind the wall near the front porch. They wanted to let the HOD speak first. Archana stood outside the door for several seconds. She took a breath. Then opened it. Lakshmi looked up. And froze. For a moment, she didn't say anything. Her daughter stood at the doorway wearing the half-saree. Her hair was loose and flowing. The makeup had not been completely removed. Heavy kajal remained around her eyes. The lipstick was still visible. There was glitter across parts of her face and arms. The decorative mehndi covered her hands and feet. Her jewellery was partly removed. And she looked exhausted. Archana saw her mother's face. Immediately she began speaking. “Amma…” Lakshmi stared. Archana panicked. “It isn't what you think.” Lakshmi's eyebrows rose. “What am I thinking?” “I don't know.” “Then what shouldn't I think?” Archana's eyes filled. “Whatever you're thinking…” Her voice cracked. “…it isn't that.” Lakshmi looked at her carefully. “What exactly am I supposed to think?” She wasn't shouting. That almost made it worse. She pointed gently toward Archana. “You have heavy kajal.” A pause. “Glittering lipstick.” “Mehndi.” “Glitter all over you.” “Your hair is completely different.” “And you look exhausted.” Archana couldn't hold herself together anymore. She began crying openly. The HOD stepped forward. “Lakshmi, please.” Lakshmi looked at her. “She participated in the cultural programme today.” Lakshmi's expression changed. “She did?” “Yes.” “We had no idea.” “I know.” The HOD gently explained that the college had arranged professional preparation because Archana was performing on stage. “The makeup, jewellery and styling were specifically for the performance.” Lakshmi looked at Archana again. Archana wiped her tears. The HOD continued. “Please don't judge her based on how she looks right now.” Lakshmi nodded slowly. “I understand the dance.” Then she looked at the glitter. “The problem is everything else.” Her voice trembled. “She already told me about the gifts.” “I understand.” “But who gives someone expensive jewellery, clothes and intimate garments just to humiliate them?” She shook her head. “It doesn't make sense.” The HOD opened her mouth. Before she could answer, a voice came from behind the porch. “Aunty?” Lakshmi turned. The girls stepped forward. Archana's eyes widened. “What are you doing here?” One girl looked at Lakshmi. “We came to explain.” Lakshmi stared at them. “Explain what?” The girl swallowed. “The gifts.” She looked at Archana. “We were the ones.” Lakshmi's expression hardened. “You?” Another girl stepped forward. “We were the ones who gave her those things.” “Why?” Nobody answered immediately. Then one girl said quietly: “Because we thought we were teaching a womanizer a lesson.” Another added, “We thought humiliating Arjun would make him understand what women go through.” The first girl looked down. “But we became cruel.” Lakshmi remained silent. “We didn't realize how far it would go.” One girl continued. “Some of the things were expensive.” “We gave them deliberately because we thought it would embarrass her.” “We wrote those notes.” “We filmed some of her reactions.” Archana looked down. The girls immediately looked ashamed. “But we aren't doing that anymore.” The HOD watched them carefully. The girl continued. “If you still doubt us, we can show you the receipts.” Another said, “And the recordings.” Lakshmi looked surprised. “We have many videos.” The girl took out her phone. “We can show you everything.” She paused. “Especially the day she opened the gifts.” Lakshmi's eyes filled. She finally understood why Archana had reacted so strangely whenever she received something. The girls stood silently. Lakshmi asked, “Why?” The first girl gave a painful smile. “Same reason you did, aunty.” Lakshmi frowned. “We thought we knew what was happening.” “We thought we were doing the right thing.” She lowered her head. “We were idiots.” Another girl whispered, “We're sorry.” Lakshmi looked at them. Then at Archana. Archana was still crying. The mother finally opened her arms. Archana stepped forward. Lakshmi embraced her. For several seconds, neither spoke. The HOD quietly stood beside them. The girls watched. They had come expecting to explain themselves. Instead, they were witnessing something much bigger. A mother finally understanding that the strange clothes, jewellery and gifts had never meant what she feared. And a daughter finally being held without having to explain herself. After a while, the HOD touched Lakshmi's shoulder. “Let her rest tonight.” Lakshmi nodded. The girls slowly stepped backward. One looked at Archana. “Sorry.” Archana looked at her. This time she didn't say it's okay. She simply nodded. The girls left with the HOD. Archana walked inside. She placed her bag down. Then stood silently in the hall. Lakshmi looked at her. “Go wash your face.” Archana nodded. She turned toward the stairs. For the first time that evening, she wasn't afraid of what her mother had seen. Because now her mother knew. And behind that knowledge was something Archana had been missing for months: Someone finally believed her before she had to prove herself.
