Part 9

Chapter 8: Birth in Reverse

Eight months earlier — the night everything changed

Latha explained what would happen to Dev.

“Kusum,” she said. “It means flower.”

Dev shook his head and went into deep sleep.

When consciousness returned she was strangely clear-headed. She knew exactly where she was.

Kusum opened her eyes.

White ceiling.

Antiseptic.

The medical wing.

She waited for panic.

It didn't come.

Instead there was a strange stillness inside her.

She knew what had happened.

She knew who she had been.

Dev.

The name was still there.

But it no longer arrived with the same certainty.

She looked at her hands.

For several seconds she tried to remember how those hands had looked before.

She could remember the idea of them.

The shape.

The strength.

But the memory already felt like something she had seen in a photograph.

That frightened her more than the pain.

Pain could be survived.

What frightened her was the possibility that memory could remain intact while ownership of that memory slowly disappeared.

Dev was still in her head.

But for the first time, Kusum was afraid that remembering him would not be enough to keep him alive.

Forgetting yourself was something else.

She tried to sit up. Her body moved before the decision finished forming. She caught herself against the mattress and stared at her hands.

Longer. Narrower. A pale crescent of nail caught the light.

“No.”

The word came out soft. Wrong.

She touched her face. Smooth. No stubble. Her fingers found the softened jaw and stopped.

Then she looked down.

The breath left her.

Between her legs the suit presented a smooth, realistic vulva—soft outer lips, a delicate slit, the appearance of a natural vagina. Completely female. But beneath the silicone, sealed inside a tight internal sleeve, her cock was locked in place.

Curious and desperate, she slid two fingers between the soft outer lips. Through the thin barrier she felt the shaft of her own cock, warm and sensitive. When she pressed, sensation flooded through—muted, filtered, still unmistakably hers.

For a few seconds she forgot to be afraid.

She tried to speak.

The voice that came out was higher and breathier.

"Oh! God."

She tried again, forcing it lower.

Nothing changed. The suit had changed her vocal cords and limited her voice to a higher, softer range.

Kusum swung her legs over the edge of the gurney and stood. Her movements were smoother than they had ever been. Her body seemed to know how to move without being told.

Every small movement registered through the suit.

Even the air against her skin felt stronger than it should.

She took a step and felt her hips sway. She tried to correct the movement and walk as she remembered, but her new balance made it difficult.

She stopped, then tried again.

She was moving like the women she had once watched and judged.

A mirror stood across the room.

Before she realised it, she was standing in front of it. She stared at herself for several seconds.

She had expected something grotesque. Instead, the woman in the mirror looked like someone from a magazine cover.

Her skin looked almost unreal. Her breasts were full and perfectly shaped.

She touched her hair.

It fell past her shoulders without a strand out of place.

Someone had designed every part of her.

The face was the worst.

Dev could still find pieces of himself in it—the eyes, the shape beneath the softened jaw.

He stared at the woman in the mirror.

She was beautiful.

That frightened him more than the body.

The eyes were still his.

Kusum raised a hand to the mirror.

The woman on the other side did the same.

For one strange second, neither of them seemed to know who was copying whom.

She stared at her own eyes. They were the only unchanged feature—Dev's eyes.

She expected to wake up, tear off the suit and laugh at the whole thing.

But there was no seam, no zipper and nothing she could pull away.

"How are you, Kusum?" Latha said as she entered.

Kusum backed into the mirror in shock. The cold glass touched her skin.

“Change me back.”

Her voice sounded wrong. The demand came out as a plea instead of an order.

“There is no going back,” Latha said.

Latha stepped closer. Kusum flattened herself against the mirror.

“The suit has bonded to you at the molecular level.”

Latha held up one finger.

“Three things.”

“First, it cannot read your thoughts. It reacts to your physical responses.”

A second finger.

“Second, it cannot make you believe anything.”

A third.

“Third, the House gives us the strongest control. Outside, that control is limited.”

She lowered her hand.

“That is why your choices still matter.”

Kusum stared at her.

“Choices?”

“Yes.”

Latha's expression remained unreadable.

“We can control your body. We cannot decide what you eventually become.”

“You can still feel desire, but you cannot control it.”

Kusum’s hands curled into fists. For one second the old anger tried to rise.

Latha’s thumb moved on the tablet.

A sharp, precise shock detonated inside the locked sleeve.

It was pure white pain focused exactly on the trapped cock—high, electric, and absolute. Kusum’s knees buckled. A raw sound tore out of her throat. She slid down the mirror, clutching at nothing.

The shock lasted less than two seconds.

When it stopped, her thighs were shaking and the anger was simply gone. Not suppressed. Erased for the moment.

“That is the first lesson,” Latha said quietly. “Aggression triggers the response. The suit does not care what you intended. It only registers the attempt.”

“I’ll kill you.” The threat came out soft, almost affectionate, from lips that no longer knew how to sound dangerous. “I’ll find a way.”

Latha did not answer with words. She simply touched the tablet once.

The second shock hit harder. It started at the base of the locked cock and climbed in rapid, overlapping pulses. Kusum’s back arched off the floor. Her mouth opened but no sound came. Every muscle tried to close around the pain and found nothing to fight.

When it ended she was on her side, breathing in short, broken gasps. Tears stood in her eyes. The defiant words were still in her mouth, but they had nowhere to go.

Latha’s hand settled on her breast—casual, proprietary. The sensitivity made her gasp anyway.

“You’ll try. You’ll fail. While you were asleep I altered the parts of your nervous system that control aggression. You cannot move aggressively. You cannot achieve dominance in any form. The suit will not allow it. And if the neural block is not enough, the shocks will finish the lesson.”

Her hand travelled lower, over the stomach, toward the smooth vulva.

“Please,” Kusum whispered, and hated the word, the voice, the fact that it was the only thing left.

“Please what?” Latha asked. “Please stop? Or please continue?”

Kusum looked away. She no longer knew which answer was true.

She stepped back and withdrew her hand. Kusum remained against the mirror, trembling. She was aroused, terrified, furious and helpless, and the suit made every sensation stronger.

“Your training begins today,” Latha said, returning to her clinical tone as she checked her tablet.

“You will learn obedience and field work. Your body is no longer yours to control.”

Kusum slid down the mirror and sat on the floor with her knees drawn up. She tried to cover herself, looking for some small sense of privacy.

"Look at me," Latha commanded.

She looked up at Latha.

Latha stood over her, checking something on the tablet.

“You are Kusum,” Latha said. “You are under my control now. You will follow my instructions. And you will learn to say thank you.”

Kusum opened her mouth.

She meant to curse her.

“Thank you, Doctor.”

Silence.

Kusum stared at Latha.

She had not chosen the words.

That frightened her more than the new voice.

She tried again—forced the old anger up from whatever was left of it.

Latha watched the tablet, then tapped once.

The third shock was shorter but deeper, a single brutal spike that felt as if the locked cock had been struck from inside. Kusum’s body jerked hard against the floor. A thin, high sound escaped her. When it ended she could not remember what she had been about to say.

“Again,” Latha said. “Properly. With eye contact.”

Kusum’s eyes stayed fixed on Latha’s. Her hands stayed where they were.

Her voice emerged soft and grateful: “Thank you, Doctor. Thank you for making me beautiful. Thank you for giving me purpose.”

She had not meant a single word of it.

“Good,” Latha said, noting something on the tablet. “Faster than projected. Physical training begins tomorrow.”

She paused at the door.

“For now, rest. You have a lot to learn about your new body.”

Latha reached the door. Then she stopped.

“And Kusum?”

Kusum looked up.

“One more demonstration. So you understand the range.”

She did not use the tablet this time. She simply spoke.

“Madhuri. Now.”

From the corridor Madhuri’s voice answered, calm and clear through the open door.

“Received.”

The fourth shock arrived without warning. It was longer—five full seconds of climbing, overlapping pulses that left no space between them. Kusum’s body seized. Her hands clawed at the floor. A broken, wordless cry tore out of her. When it finally stopped she was shaking so hard her teeth clicked.

Madhuri stepped into the doorway and looked down at her.

“Both of us can trigger it,” she said. “From any room. From any distance inside the House. The suit answers to either of us.”

She waited until Kusum’s breathing had slowed.

“You felt anger. You tried to use it. The suit answered. That is the entire lesson.”

Latha’s voice was quiet.

“Welcome to the rest of your life.”

The door closed.

Kusum remained on the floor.

She tried one last time to summon Dev’s rage. Something flickered behind her eyes—then the memory of the four shocks rose and the flicker died.

For the first time, the man who had always calculated the exits found none.
