Epilogue – Soft Things That Remain

Three months later the city was different. A quieter station house, a different stretch of coastline, rooms that did not yet smell of anyone’s history. Manav had transferred without explanation. No one asked questions. The file on the unmarked body had finally closed. Manav saw the knife lying beside Rakesh’s hand.

He recognised the pattern on the handle from the crime-scene photographs.

He had seen the same distinctive metalwork in the photographs taken from Chameli’s body.

For the first time, the case made sense. With the suspect dead, the department archived the file and moved on.

He lived alone in a one-room flat on the third floor. At night the traffic thinned early. The only regular sounds were the ceiling fan and the occasional scooter two streets over.

The drawer sat under the narrow bed.

Three soft nighties, folded the way he had learned to fold them. One pale pink, one deeper rose, one plain white cotton already going thin at the seams from repeated washing. Beside them a small stack of plain, seamless panties—the kind that disappeared under trousers. He had bought them himself in a different market, speaking to the salesperson without looking away, carrying every bag home alone.

Every evening the ritual was the same.

He locked the door. Removed the police uniform piece by piece—shirt, trousers, the undershirt that still carried the faint starch of the laundry. Underneath, the soft panties were already there. He had put them on that morning the way other men put on briefs, without ceremony, and worn them through the entire shift. The fabric sat against him differently from anything he had worn before the rocks. Cooler. Quieter. When he sat at his desk or stood through briefings the soft pressure was constant, a private fact no one else could see.

He left the panties on.

Then he took the pale-pink nightie from the drawer and pulled it over his head. The thin straps settled on his shoulders. The hem fell to mid-thigh. Cool air moved under the cotton and across the shaved skin of his legs. He sat on the edge of the bed and worked oil through his long black hair the same way he had learned in the cheap room—slow, thorough, until the strands slid clean between his fingers. The braid came next. Simple plait first, then the looser side braid, then the tighter attempt that no longer slipped as easily as it once had. His fingers no longer felt thick. They knew the tension, the twist, the exact moment to pull.

When the hair was done he stood in front of the small mirror propped against the wall and looked.

Long braided hair over one shoulder. Tired eyes that no longer looked quite the same. The soft drape of the nightie over a chest that was still flat underneath, yet somehow different because of the fabric that covered it. The outline of the panties visible if he turned a certain way. He stayed there longer than he needed to, the way he had the first night Chameli tossed him the baby-doll and left him to put it on alone.

Sometimes he touched himself.

Not every night. Only when the quiet of the room and the soft movement of the cotton against his skin became too specific to ignore. He would stand in front of the mirror the way he had once in the cracked glass of the other city, nightie rucked up just enough, soft panties pushed aside, and watch his own hand move. The orgasm still came quiet and intense, a long shudder that left him leaning against the wall, the nightie still twisted around his hips, his palm wet. Afterwards there was the same long, complicated silence. No one appeared in the doorway. No green glass bangle caught the light. He was alone with the clothes and the body that had learned them.

In the mornings he reversed the process. Soft panties left on under the uniform trousers. The weight of the gun belt sat differently now. The sound of his boots on the station floor no longer felt like the only sound that belonged to him.

The request came on a Thursday.

The ACP called him in after the evening briefing, closed the door, and spoke without looking up from the file.

“Another stretch of beach. Working girls. Similar pattern as before. We need someone who already knows how to move in that world. Quietly.”

Manav stood with his hands behind his back. He knew the exact weight of a padded bra. He knew the exact sound four-inch heels made on wet pavement. He knew how a short skirt rode up when the sea wind caught it, how soft fabric felt against freshly shaved skin, how to braid long hair so it stayed out of the way while still looking like it belonged.

“When?” he asked.

“Tomorrow night. You’ll go in as one of them. The usual arrangement—no backup close enough to compromise the cover.”

Manav nodded once. The ACP dismissed him with a wave.

That night he took the rose-coloured nightie from the drawer instead of the pink. He oiled his hair longer than usual. The braid he made was neater. When he stood in front of the mirror the fabric moved against him with every small shift of breath. He did not touch himself. He only looked until the reflection stopped feeling like a costume and started feeling like the person who would walk out onto a new stretch of beach the following evening carrying his own bag.

In the morning he put the soft panties on under the uniform the same as always. At the station he signed the necessary forms without comment. In the afternoon he went to a small market and bought what was needed—padded bra, short skirt, sheer stockings, the thin blouse that would show the shape. He spoke to every salesperson himself. He carried every bag himself.

At dusk he returned to the flat, locked the door, and changed.

The nightie came off last. He folded it carefully and placed it back in the drawer. The soft panties stayed. Over them went the working clothes he already knew by feel—the weight of the bra, the cling of the stockings, the way the skirt hem sat high on his thighs. He braided his hair one final time, checked the makeup in the mirror, and picked up the small bag.

Outside, the air smelled of salt and diesel the way it always had. He walked toward the new stretch of beach without looking back. The heels clicked on the pavement in a rhythm that no longer felt foreign.

The rocks were different. The water was the same. He stepped onto them the way the other girls did—weight on one hip, bag in one hand, already listening for the first client who would not look twice.
