Part 12

Part 12 Image

A year after arriving in Kolkata, Arjun looked back on the person who had stepped off the train with a small bag and almost no hope.

His circumstances had changed. He had a job, a rented room, a few trusted friends, and a better understanding of himself.

His long hair remained one of his most recognisable features. He still enjoyed trying different hairstyles, but he no longer treated his appearance as a test he had to pass for other people.

His relationship with Maya and Tara had become healthier because he had learned to establish boundaries. They could offer advice, but they could not decide his identity.

Arjun also understood that his journey might continue to change. If he eventually recognised himself as a transgender woman, he could explore that identity and any desired gender-affirming care with appropriate support. If he reached a different understanding, that would be valid too.

One evening, he stood before his mirror wearing a simple light-blue shirt and dark trousers. His hair fell naturally over his shoulders.

He smiled—not because he had become the person someone else wanted, but because he finally felt free to discover who he was.

Kolkata had not given him an easy life.

It had given him a beginning.

And this time, he would decide what came next.

Congratulations!
