Chapter 5 — Aaradhya's First Morning

One morning, Vasundhara found Arav looking at the green saree again.

“Would you like to try another style?” she asked.

Arav hesitated, then nodded. “I'd like to learn properly. Hair, jewellery, skincare—all of it. But please don't make decisions for me.”

That was the first time Vasundhara understood that her well-intentioned lessons had sometimes felt like pressure. She apologised, and from then on, their morning sessions became something they planned together.

She taught Arav a simple skincare routine: washing his face gently, moisturising, and protecting his skin from the sun. She showed him how to care for his hair without pulling it too tightly, how to arrange a braid, and how to match a small bindi with a saree.

They experimented with a pale pink saree, a delicate necklace, and tiny gold earrings. Vasundhara explained that jewellery did not need to be expensive to feel meaningful.

“Choose something that makes you feel comfortable,” she said. “Beauty should not become a burden.”

Arav began noticing the little rituals he had previously ignored: the cool touch of a necklace clasp, the soft click of bangles, the fragrance of jasmine woven into a braid, and the satisfaction of folding a saree carefully after wearing it.

One morning, he stood before the mirror for several minutes.

“What is it?” Vasundhara asked.

“I don't know how to explain it,” he answered. “When I dress this way, I feel different. Sometimes nervous, sometimes happy. And sometimes I feel like I'm seeing a part of myself I never had the courage to look at.”

Vasundhara sat beside him.

“You do not have to decide everything today.”

For the first time, Arav allowed himself to consider that his feelings might be deeper than curiosity about clothing.

He chose a new name to explore this side of himself: Aaradhya.

He did not yet know whether that name would become his everyday identity. But speaking it aloud made his heart beat faster.

“Aaradhya,” he whispered to his reflection.

The name sounded delicate, yet it gave him a surprising feeling of strength.

That afternoon, he called Meera. He told her about the name, his emotions, and his growing need to understand himself.

Meera was silent for a moment.

“I may need time to understand everything,” she admitted. “But I want you to be honest with yourself. And I want us to talk honestly about what this means for our marriage.”

Aaradhya felt both relieved and afraid. The conversation had not solved everything, but it had opened a door.

Emotional turning point: Aaradhya places a bindi on her forehead, looking into the mirror with cautious hope and a quiet smile.
