Nisha placed her suitcase near the wall and sat in the living room. She did not appear nervous. In fact, she seemed more comfortable than Arun had ever felt in that room.

“I have brought the documents,” she said, placing the envelope on the table.

Madhavan did not touch it.

“We can discuss this privately.”

“I would prefer to discuss it openly.”

“Some matters are complicated.”

“My mother's life was complicated enough. I don't want the truth to become more complicated because everyone is afraid to speak about it.”

Devika looked at her with a mixture of sadness and surprise.

Arun had never heard anyone speak to his father that way.

Madhavan lowered his voice.

“You must understand that your grandfather's decisions were made many years ago.”

“My grandfather's decisions affected my mother for her entire life.”

The room fell silent.

Arun looked from Nisha to his father.

For the first time, he began to understand why Nisha had come.

She was not visiting to meet relatives or learn about her family history. She had come because something had been taken from her mother, and she wanted answers.

But his father seemed less concerned about answering her questions than about preventing other people from hearing them.

That afternoon, Arun overheard another conversation.

His father was speaking on the phone in his study.

“No, the journalist must not publish anything yet,” Madhavan said. “We need a few days.”

He listened for a moment.

“I understand what the photographs show. That is exactly why we need to be careful.”

Arun moved closer to the half-open door.

Then he heard something that made him freeze.

“If necessary, we can introduce Nisha publicly before the journalist gets the chance to question the family.”

There was a pause.

“No. Not the real Nisha.”

Arun stepped back.

His heart began to beat faster.

What did his father mean?

Later that evening, Madhavan called Arun into the study.

“Sit down,” he said.

Arun remained standing.

“Why did you say 'not the real Nisha' on the phone?”

His father looked up slowly.

“You were listening to my conversation?”

“I heard enough to know you're planning something.”

Madhavan closed the file on his desk.

“The journalist investigating your grandfather's past believes that Nisha has returned to claim a share of the family property. If he publishes the story before we have time to respond, the entire family will be dragged into a scandal.”

“Then tell him the truth.”

“It isn't that simple.”

“Why not?”

“Because people do not wait for explanations. They make judgments. They turn private matters into public entertainment.”

Arun folded his arms.

“And what does that have to do with me?”

His father did not answer immediately.

Then he said, “You and Nisha have a similar build. With the right clothes and a little preparation, people who don't know her personally might mistake you for her from a distance.”

Arun stared at him.

“Are you serious?”

“I am asking you to help us.”

“You want me to pretend to be a woman?”

“I want you to pretend to be Nisha for a short time.”

Arun let out a disbelieving laugh.

“No. Absolutely not.”

“Arun, listen—”

“No, Appa! You cannot ask me to become someone else because you're afraid of a journalist.”

“I'm not asking you to change who you are.”

“Then why are you asking me to hide who I am?”

His father stood up.

“Because this family is in danger!”

“And what about me?”

The question remained between them.

For a moment, Madhavan seemed unable to respond.

Arun walked out of the study, angry and confused. He had spent his entire life believing that his father would always protect him. Now he was being asked to protect his father by becoming part of a lie.

When he returned to his bedroom, his phone vibrated.

An unknown number had sent him a message.

Don't agree to your father's plan.

Arun stared at the screen.

Another message followed.

You've only heard his version of the story.

Then a final message appeared.

Ask what really happened to Nandita.

Arun sat on the edge of his bed.

Outside, the old house stood quietly beneath the evening sky. But inside its walls, every secret seemed to be waking up.

And Arun was beginning to realise that he might be the only person in the family who knew almost nothing.
