Chapter 11 β The Grandfather's Room
Scene: Grandfather's Bedroom β A Rainy Evening
Grandfather's health worsened after several days of heavy rain. He struggled to walk without support and occasionally forgot whether he had taken his medicines.
The family became anxious.
Kethan took responsibility for maintaining a written medicine schedule, arranging water beside the bed, and helping Grandfather move safely when needed. He accompanied him on short walks when permitted by the doctor and gave him gentle hand and foot massages when he felt stiff.
One night, Grandfather woke feeling uncomfortable and called for help.
Kethan rushed into the room wearing a green floral dress, his long hair loosely braided.
"Thatha, I'm here."
He adjusted the pillow and called Lakshmi to bring the prescribed medicine. After checking the instructions, he helped Grandfather take it and stayed beside him until he felt better.
Grandfather held his wrist.
"Don't leave me alone."
Kethan's eyes filled with tears.
"I'm not going anywhere."
From the doorway, Athamma watched silently.
Later, she found Kethan asleep in a chair beside the bed. His braid had slipped over one shoulder, and his hand rested near Grandfather's.
She gently covered him with a shawl.
The next morning, she scolded him for skipping breakfast.
"You cannot care for everyone if you fall sick yourself!"
Kethan looked up in surprise.
"I'll eat now, Athamma."
She placed a plate before him and sat nearby.
After several minutes, she spoke quietly.
"My husband asks for you whenever he wakes up."
Kethan struggled to hold back his tears.
He had spent months wondering whether the family would accept him. He had not realised how much love had already grown through his ordinary acts of care.
For the first time, Athamma's concern felt more powerful than her criticism.
