Chapter 8 — Learning the Language of Clothes
Scene: The Bedroom — A Quiet Sunday
The nightdress was only the beginning of Kethan's exploration.
Over the following weeks, he tried different styles in the privacy of the house: a long frock, a cotton skirt and top, and eventually a sky-blue chudidhar.
Saroja taught him how to arrange a dupatta so that it stayed in place. Padma helped him select colours and matching accessories.
Their lessons were filled with laughter.
"Stop moving!" Padma exclaimed while trying to pin the dupatta.
"I'm not moving!"
"Your shoulders are moving!"
"Because you're pulling my hair!"
Saroja burst into laughter.
Gradually, the sisters became more comfortable helping him. One afternoon, Saroja applied a small bindi to his forehead.
Kethan looked into the mirror.
"Do I look strange?"
"No," she replied. "You look like yourself trying something new."
Her words touched him deeply.
He realised that his feelings were not only about clothing. He enjoyed the time spent choosing outfits, arranging his hair, and exploring a presentation that felt comfortable to him.
Yet he remained afraid of Ananya's reaction.
One night, he opened her photograph on his phone and remembered her promise that he should always be himself.
He wanted to tell her everything, but he feared losing the person he loved most.
For now, he continued learning quietly, determined to understand himself before beginning that difficult conversation.
