Chapter 14 — The Village Begins to See Her
Sowjanya began accompanying Lakshmi Devi to village meetings. At first, she sat quietly, listening to discussions about water supply, roads, school repairs, and agricultural concerns.
Her police experience helped her understand records and procedures. She noticed that some development projects had been delayed and that villagers were frustrated.
One day, a farmer approached her with a complaint about a broken irrigation channel.
Sowjanya listened carefully and helped him prepare the necessary documents. She then accompanied him to the panchayat office.
The work reminded her of her former career, but this time she was not wearing a police uniform. She wore a green saree with a gold border, her hair neatly braided.
Her confidence grew as villagers began asking for her help.
Lakshmi Devi watched with pride.
"You have a gift for listening," she told her.
Sowjanya realized that leadership did not always begin with a title. Sometimes it began with a person willing to listen when others had stopped caring.
She began helping her mother with village responsibilities, slowly becoming a trusted presence in Devapuram.
Her future was beginning to connect with the village's needs.
