Chapter 3: The New Face

2 hours later..

The fan above suddenly whirred back to life. The lights in the small makeup room blinked once, twice, then stayed on bright and steady. Power was back. The golden candle flames looked small and weak now in the electric glow.

Uncle Raja gently turned Vijay around to face the tall mirror on the wall. “Look,” he said softly.

Vijay lifted his eyes.

What he saw made his stomach drop.

Staring back at him was not the rough, twenty-seven-year-old man who had run from Hyderabad. Instead, a beautiful young woman stood there, looking straight into his eyes.

Her long, silky black hair was pulled back neatly into a low messy hairbun at the back of her neck. A few soft strands had escaped and fell around her face, giving her a natural, just-woken-up look. A bright red bindi sat perfectly in the center of her forehead. Below it, a small gold nose stud sparkled on her left nostril. Her eyes looked bigger and softer now, lined with black kohl. Her full lips shone with a light pink gloss, curved in a way that felt warm and inviting.

Her skin glowed with a fresh, sweaty shine, like she had just come out of the kitchen after cooking in the heat. The smooth, feminine glow made every inch of her face and neck look soft and alive under the bright lights. There was a raw sensuality in the way the light caught the tiny drops of sweat on her collarbone.

She wore a simple yellow nighty made of thin cotton. Because the power had gone out, Uncle Raja had chosen something light and comfortable for the night. The dress had short sleeves and a deep, rounded neckline that showed her ample cleavage clearly. A thin gold chain hung between her breasts, ending in a small heart-shaped pendant that rested right there, drawing the eye. The yellow fabric with its white patterns hugged her new feminine curves gently — the soft swell of her chest, the narrow waist, and the gentle flare of her hips. It fell loosely to her knees, simple and homely, yet it made her look completely natural, like any woman getting ready for bed in her own house.

Her arms were slim and smooth. On both wrists she wore stacks of bright red bangles mixed with a few thin gold ones. They clicked softly when she moved her hands. Her fingers looked delicate, with a small gold ring on one.

Vijay stared, unable to speak. He slowly raised one hand and touched his own cheek. The woman in the mirror did the same. His rough, manly hands were gone. Now they looked soft and cared for. He turned his head a little. The low messy bun swayed gently. The sweaty glow on his smooth skin caught the light again, making everything look even more real and feminine.

His heart beat fast. Shame burned in his chest. This was him. This was the only way he could hide. But seeing himself like this — so completely changed, so openly sensual — made something inside him twist with confusion and fear.

Uncle Raja stood behind him, watching quietly in the mirror. “You look like any ordinary woman from Vijayawada now,” he said in a calm voice. “No one will look twice. No one will connect this face to the man on the news.”

Vijay swallowed hard. His new glossy lips moved, but no words came out at first. He could only stare at the stranger who was now him — the low messy bun, the glowing skin, the deep neckline of the simple yellow nighty, the raw sensuality that seemed to come so easily from his new look.

The transformation was complete.

And there was no going back tonight.
