Chapter 7: The Checkpoint

Two days had passed in a blur of practice and quiet fear. The time to leave Uncle Raja’s safe house had finally come.

Priyanka stood in front of the tall mirror one last time, heart hammering. Suresh had spent the entire morning helping her get ready, turning every small detail into a lesson. The result was breathtaking — and terrifying.

From head to toe, Priyanka looked like a living dream of sensuality wrapped in everyday grace. Her long, silky black hair was woven into a thick, loose braid that fell over one shoulder, reaching almost to her waist. Fresh white jasmine flowers were woven into the braid, their sweet fragrance mixing with the faint scent of coconut oil. A few rebellious strands framed her face softly, brushing against her glowing cheeks. Her forehead carried a small, bright red bindi that drew the eye upward. Below it, her eyes — lined with kajal — appeared large, dark, and impossibly feminine, framed by long lashes. Her full lips shone with a soft pink gloss, slightly parted as if she were always on the verge of speaking.

Her neck was smooth and elegant, adorned with a thin gold chain that dipped low between her heavy F-cup breasts. The deep blue cotton saree was draped with expert care. The matching blue blouse was short and tight, hugging her chest so closely that her ample cleavage was clearly visible — two soft, rounded swells that rose and fell with every nervous breath. The gold pendant on the chain rested right there, nestling in the warm valley between them. The saree itself was tied low on her hips, leaving a generous stretch of smooth, bare midriff exposed. Her belly was soft and womanly, with a deep, inviting navel that caught the light whenever she moved. The blue fabric with its delicate red and green floral patterns clung gently to the wide curve of her hips and the full roundness of her buttocks before falling in graceful folds to her ankles.

Her arms were slim yet soft, decorated with thin silver bangles that chimed softly with every gesture. A small black tattoo-like bracelet design was drawn on one wrist. Her fingers looked delicate, nails neatly painted. Even her bare feet, with a simple toe ring on the second toe, completed the picture of a beautiful, everyday village woman who had no idea how dangerously attractive she appeared.

Priyanka stared at herself and felt a wave of dizziness. This was not a costume anymore. This was her. The heavy breasts, the exposed midriff, the sway of the saree — every part of her body now screamed “woman.” She swallowed hard, fighting the shame that still burned inside her chest.

“Perfect,” Suresh said softly from behind her, adjusting the pallu one final time. “You look exactly like you belong with us.”

Ravi was already waiting outside with the old white van. Bags were loaded. The three of them — two women and one man — climbed in. Ravi drove. Suresh sat in front. Priyanka sat in the back, clutching her small purse, the jasmine in her hair filling the van with its sweet smell. As the vehicle pulled away from Uncle Raja’s house, she watched the streets of Vijayawada disappear behind them. The open highway stretched ahead like an uncertain future.

For the first hour the journey felt almost peaceful. Suresh told light stories from old shows. Ravi laughed. Priyanka even managed a small smile. But then the red-and-blue lights appeared ahead.

A police checkpoint.

Two constables stood on either side of the road. A senior officer in khaki uniform waved the van over. Ravi slowed down and stopped the vehicle under the shade of a large tree. The engine ticked softly as it cooled.

“Stay calm,” Suresh whispered without turning around. “Breathe like we practiced.”

The senior officer — tall, middle-aged, with a thick mustache and sharp, roaming eyes — walked up to the driver’s window. “Routine check,” he said in a flat voice. “IDs and vehicle papers.”

Ravi handed over the documents smoothly. The officer glanced at them, then looked into the back seat. His eyes landed on Priyanka and stayed there.

“Madam… your ID,” he said, his voice suddenly slower.

Priyanka’s fingers trembled as she pulled out the forged card Uncle Raja had made. “Priyanka Reddy, 26 years old, resident of a small village near Vijayawada.” The photo matched perfectly. She passed it through the window with a shy, nervous smile, just as Suresh had taught her.

The officer took the card. He studied it for what felt like forever. Then his gaze lifted — and moved slowly, deliberately over her body.

He stared openly at her deep cleavage. The blue blouse stretched tight across her heavy breasts, the gold chain disappearing into that warm, soft valley. His eyes traced the gentle rise and fall of her chest with each anxious breath. From there, his stare dropped lower, lingering on the exposed midriff — the smooth, bare skin shining slightly in the sunlight, the deep navel, the soft curve of her belly. The saree was tied so low that the edge of the fabric sat dangerously close to her hips.

Priyanka felt completely naked under that gaze. Her skin prickled. Her heart pounded so loudly she was sure everyone could hear it. She wanted to cross her arms, to hide, but she forced herself to sit still, eyes lowered like a modest woman.

The officer didn’t stop. He turned his head slightly and looked at Suresh in the front seat. Suresh’s red saree was even bolder — the blouse tighter, the midriff more openly displayed, the cleavage deeper. The officer’s eyes moved over both women with the same hungry attention, comparing them, drinking them in.

The silence stretched. The two constables behind him shifted, also staring.

Priyanka’s throat went dry. *He knows. He has seen the wanted poster. Any second now he will pull out his gun and —*

Suresh leaned forward in his seat, turning slightly toward the officer. His voice became soft, playful, and unmistakably feminine. “Saar… you are making my poor cousin very nervous,” he said with a light laugh that sounded warm and inviting. He adjusted his pallu slowly, letting it slip just a little so more of his own cleavage and midriff came into view. “We are only a small drama troupe going for a show in the next village. Two helpless women travelling with one man — you know how dangerous the road feels these days.”

Suresh smiled — a slow, teasing smile — and tilted his head. “If you keep looking at us like that, saar, we will forget all our lines for tonight’s performance.” His hand brushed lightly against his own bare waist as he spoke, drawing the officer’s eyes exactly where he wanted them.

The officer’s stern face softened. A small, hungry smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. He looked again at Priyanka’s breasts, then at Suresh’s midriff, then back at the IDs in his hand. The tension in the van was electric — thick enough to choke on. Priyanka’s palms were sweating. One wrong word, one suspicious glance, and everything would end here on this dusty highway.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the officer handed the cards back. “Alright… move along,” he said, his voice a little huskier than before. “But be careful. These roads are not safe for… beautiful ladies like you.”

Suresh gave one last playful smile. “Thank you, saar. We will be careful.”

Ravi started the van. The wheels rolled forward slowly.

They drove past the checkpoint in complete silence. Only when the flashing lights had completely disappeared in the rear-view mirror did Priyanka finally let out the breath she had been holding. Her entire body was shaking. The jasmine flowers in her hair suddenly felt too heavy. The blue saree clung to her damp skin. The memory of the officer’s long, shameless stare on her cleavage and bare midriff burned in her mind like fire.

Suresh turned around in his seat, his face calm but his eyes understanding. “You did very well, Priyanka. That was our first real test on the road.”

Priyanka nodded weakly, but inside she felt raw and exposed. The world had looked at her — at *her body* — the way men look at women. And for those terrifying minutes, she had been forced to sit there and let it happen.

Priyanka was no longer just a disguise.

She was her only shield.

And the road ahead was still very, very long.
