Chapter 1: River Cauvery

The Cauvery flowed lazily under the golden evening light, its waters shimmering like molten copper as the sun dipped toward the western ghats. Erode had always been a city of contrasts, the gentle, life giving river on one side, and the relentless hum of spinning mills and power looms on the other. Today, the river seemed almost meditative, its surface occasionally broken by small ripples as fallen leaves and distant memories drifted along.

A sleek black Royal Enfield Classic roared along the narrow side road running parallel to the riverbank. The rider leaned casually, one hand on the throttle, the other occasionally brushing back his shoulder-length hair that danced wildly in the warm wind.

Satyaraj Gounder.

Twenty two years old. Fair skinned, lean frame, not too tall just 5'6" ,with sharp, almost delicate features that many girls in college had secretly admired. A faint stubble shadowed his jaw, giving him a carelessly handsome look. He wore a simple white half-sleeve shirt with the top buttons open, revealing a thin gold chain, and faded blue jeans. No helmet. Why bother when life felt like one long joyride?

The bike slowed as he approached the massive iron gates of Gounder Illam, the sprawling ancestral bungalow that dominated this part of Erode. The house was a statement: gleaming white walls, marble fountains, manicured lawns, and a fleet of luxury cars parked under the portico. Two black Mercedes, a white BMW X5, and his personal favourite, the matte black Thar he usually took for weekend spins.

As Satyaraj killed the engine, the sounds of the house rushed in.

“Faster! You think this is your father’s village? Move your hands properly!”

His father, Mahendran Gounder, stood on the veranda like a king addressing his subjects. A heavy set man in his late fifties, wearing a crisp white veshti and a gold chain thick enough to anchor a boat, he was pointing angrily at a group of migrant women cleaning the courtyard and washing the cars. Most of them were Bihari, dark skinned, wearing faded sarees, their glass bangles clinking as they scrubbed furiously.

“These people… coming here for work and behaving like they’re on vacation,” Mahendran grumbled loudly.

Inside, Satyaraj’s elder brother Karthik (28) sat on the swing with his wife, sipping filter coffee while occasionally adding his own complaints. His elder sister Dr. Priya sharp, confident, and already a successful gynecologist in Coimbatore had come home for the weekend and was scrolling through her phone on the sofa, barely glancing at the workers.

Their mother, Lakshmi Amma , moved like a general through the kitchen wing, directing the servants, both local and migrant with sharp commands. “Wipe that corner again! I can still see dust. These Bihari women don’t know how to clean properly.”

Satyaraj slipped inside quietly through the side entrance, hoping to avoid the drama. He had always been the youngest, the pampered one. Nothing was ever expected of him. College? He barely passed with attendance shortage. Job? Why, when the family mills generated more money than they could spend? His father had built an empire in textiles. All Satyaraj had to do was exist beautifully.

He flopped onto his bed in his spacious room, the AC cooling his sweat-soaked skin. The faint scent of his expensive perfume still lingered on the sheets. Life felt too easy. Too streamlined. Like a river that had already decided its path, no rocks, no turns, just smooth, endless flow.

His phone rang.

A soft, playful voice came through.

“Raj… where are you da? I’ve been waiting.”

Dr. Nithya, his girlfriend of eight months. A confident, beautiful 24 year old doctor at a private hospital in Erode. But her real passion was something else entirely, running a high end salon as a hobby. She loved experimenting with hair, makeup, beauty treatments, and turning people into works of art. Their relationship was fun, teasing, and full of silly bets.

Satyaraj grinned, grabbing his keys.

“On my way, baby.”

He took the white BMW X5 instead of the bike. The engine purred smoothly as he sped toward their usual café near the river. Nithya was already there, looking stunning in a simple salwar kameez, her doctor’s coat draped over the chair. Her eyes sparkled with mischief the moment she saw him.

They laughed, teased, ate crispy vadas and filter coffee, and talked about everything and nothing. Then came the bet.

“Loser has to do whatever the winner says for one full day,” Nithya declared, eyes narrowing playfully.

The game was simple, a silly mobile game they played often. Satyaraj lost. Badly.

Nithya leaned forward, a dangerous little smirk playing on her lips.

“Tomorrow… you’re going to be my mannequin, Raj. Full day. Whatever I want.”

Satyaraj laughed loudly, running a hand through his long hair.

“Mannequin? What, you’re going to put makeup on me or something? Fine da, I don’t care. It’ll be funny.”

Nithya’s smirk deepened, something unreadable flickering in her eyes.

“Yes… it’s going to be very funny.”

They spent the rest of the evening together, riding around, stopping by the riverbank, stealing kisses as the Cauvery flowed silently beside them, carrying secrets no one could yet see.

As night fell completely, the camera slowly pulled back.

Far away from the glittering lights of Gounder Illam, in a cramped, dimly lit slum colony on the outskirts of Erode, a tired hand emerged from a small shack near the riverbank.

A woman’s hand, rough from work, fingers adorned with faded mehendi and silver rings.

She held something small and heavy.

A mangalsutra black beads slightly broken, the gold pendant dull under the moonlight.

For a moment, the hand trembled.

Then, with quiet finality, she tossed it into the dark waters of the Cauvery.

The mangalsutra sank beneath the surface, disappearing into the gentle current, carried slowly downstream… toward a future none of them could imagine yet.

The river kept flowing.

Indifferent.

Patient.

Waiting.

Hi Jeru, loved the story. Please post "your name" also. Also consider my old suggestion of doing a fully forced fem story. Like with a villain and all. Haha. Let me know if we can connect somewhere in social media.

Great story, Jeru! Never saw that Part 33 twist coming. The whole story was a roller coaster from start to finish, and it was definitely worth the wait. Crazy writing, crazy imagination. Loved every bit of it.

Thank youu very much, means a lot to me 💫 I've been learning different ways of story telling, predominantly Monomyth and Freyteg's pyramid, I'll try to incorporate more of those with increased allegorical elements ( ꈍᴗꈍ)

If y'all remember, I had teased a story named "Your Name.", i deemed it be of a entirely different genre, might not be suitable for this community. Perhaps if y'all are interested, I'll publish it in Wattpad...

And again sorry for the delay in publication of the story. Contradictory to my initial small story idea, it ballooned to 42 Main chapters, which i had to write, proof check and upload in the website, damnnn it was exhausting 🫪
