# Chapter: Surekha's Final Goodbye

Just then, Surekha, who was living in the United States, called her parents because she was facing a serious crisis in her life.

She first asked about everyone at home. Her parents told her that they were doing fine. They also shared the surprising news that Sumanth was now becoming **Suma**, and that their niece Ragini was staying with them.

After listening quietly, Surekha took a deep breath and began speaking.

"During the first three years after we came to America, Satish and I had a happy married life. But slowly, the distance between us kept growing.

Your son-in-law, Satish, became friends with a group of Americans. Some of them were gay, and others regularly exchanged partners for a day or two. At first, I strongly opposed it. But if I wanted to continue living with him, I had no choice but to give in.

Sometimes I was even forced into relationships with lesbian women.

After living like this for so long, I don't even feel like coming back to India anymore. At the same time, I feel too ashamed to face any of you."

She paused for a moment before continuing.

"A year ago, I became pregnant. Instead of being happy, Satish started questioning me.

He asked, 'We haven't been together for more than four months. So whose child is this? Did you become pregnant because of Charles? Or is it William's baby?'

I had no answer.

At first I got angry, but later I tried everything I could to convince him. Deep down, he knew this situation had happened because of the lifestyle he had forced on me. But his male ego wouldn't let him accept it. Being in a foreign country, he simply stopped caring.

Sadly, I have realized that many men think this way."

Her voice grew weaker.

"Gradually, Satish stopped coming home. Then we found out that the baby I was carrying was a girl.

Later I learned that he had started living with another woman. Now he only visits occasionally, whenever it suits him.

Meanwhile, Charles and William also started visiting me. They claimed they cared about me and the unborn baby. I couldn't refuse anyone anymore.

Nine months ago, I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.

For a month or two after that, all three of them kept bringing different people to the house for their business networking. I was in no position to refuse.

Then, unexpectedly, Charles became close to me.

One day he took me to a nearby village and settled me in a farmhouse. He promised that no one would trouble me anymore. I even found a job nearby.

Little by little, I got used to this new life.

Satish and I have separated, although there was no legal divorce.

If Satish ever comes to meet you, please don't speak to him.

And... this will be the last time I ever speak to you.

Please think of your elder daughter, Surekha, as someone who is no longer alive.

I cannot escape this life anymore."

By now, everyone on the video call was silently crying.

Then Surekha said softly,

"Please call Suma. I need to speak with her."

A few moments later, **Suma** appeared on the video call, with **Ragini** standing beside her.

The moment Surekha saw Suma, she burst into tears.

"Oh, Suma... you've changed so much. You look so beautiful now.

From now on, you must take care of Amma and Nanna.

There was a time when I used to call you 'Sumanth.' But today, even hearing a man's name fills me with fear.

Until now, the only men I ever trusted were our father and you. Now that you are becoming a woman too, I truly believe that apart from our father, there is no safer man in this world.

I'll never have another chance to see Amma or Nanna again. In fact, I won't even try.

I heard that Ragini is staying there with all of you.

Both of you, please be careful.

Suma... complete your medical treatment and become the woman you truly want to be.

But never blindly trust any man.

Build a good life for yourself. Help Father with the business."

Then she turned toward Ragini.

"Ragini... I only remember seeing you when you were a little girl. I'm so happy that you're with my parents now.

Even if I'm gone, Amma and Nanna still have two daughters—you and Suma.

You may be our aunt's daughter, but you've always been like my own sister.

Please stay by Suma's side throughout her medical treatment. Take good care of her."

Unable to speak, both Suma and Ragini simply nodded through their tears.

Their father, Raghuram, let out a long, painful sigh.

Surekha wiped her eyes one last time.

"It's time for me to leave for work.

This is goodbye.

I will never see any of you again."

Still sobbing uncontrollably, she disconnected the video call.

The screen went dark.

For several months, Janakamma had slowly begun recovering from the emotional storms that had shaken the family.

But the moment the call ended, the unbearable pain became too much.

Like a tree suddenly cut down at its roots, she collapsed to the floor.
