Hours later, the house was dark except for the dim glow of the bedside lamp in the master bedroom.

Priya was lying on her stomach, her face turned to the side, eyes closed in total defeat. Arjun sat beside her on the mattress. He had loosened his saree, the pallu draped carelessly over his lap. He had taken off his heavy earrings and washed his face, wiping away the makeup, though a faint smudge of stubborn black kohl remained beneath his eyes.

His hands, slick with scented massage oil, were working smoothly over Priya's calves. He pressed his thumbs deep into her tense muscles, rubbing the knots with practiced, firm pressure. The rhythmic motion usually calmed them both, a deeply loving act of care that grounded their relationship. Tonight, it felt like a desperate attempt to rub away a terrible future.

They had spent the last two hours at the dining table with spreadsheets, facing the harsh mathematical truth that they could not survive this.

"We have to list the house for sale tomorrow," Priya said, her voice dull and empty into the pillow. "If we sell it fast, we might clear enough to pay off the bank and have a little left over to rent a small flat."

"I can call the real estate agent in the morning," Arjun said softly, his thumbs pressing into the back of her knee.

Priya turned her head to look at him. The dim light cast long shadows across her face. "And you need to start applying for jobs, Arjun."

The words struck him with actual, physical force. His hands stopped moving on her legs.

"Jobs?" he repeated, his heart rate instantly shooting up.

"You have a master's degree in finance," she said, sitting up slightly, resting on her elbows. "You have five years of corporate banking experience before you quit to stay home. You need to get an office job. A corporate job. We need a steady income immediately."

Arjun looked down at his oily hands. He looked at the clear polish on his oval nails. He looked down at the soft swell of his padded chest beneath the cotton blouse. He touched the gold nose stud on his left nostril.

"I can't," he whispered, a wave of intense sickness washing over him.

"We don't have a choice, Arjun," she pleaded, her voice cracking with the pain of what she was asking him to do. "I'll be looking too, but the job market is terrible right now for senior roles. We need two incomes just to survive."

"Priya, look at me," he begged, tears filling his eyes. "Look at what I am. How can I go to a corporate office? How can I sit in a bank?"

"You'll have to cut your hair," she said softly, reaching out to touch the dark strands escaping his bun. The words clearly hurt her as much as they hurt him. "You'll have to take out the piercings. Stop the body waxing. You'll have to buy suits. Trousers. Shirts. You have to go back to being a man outside."
