Slowly, his legs shaking so badly he could barely stand, Arjun got up from the bed. He adjusted his saree, making sure the pleats were perfectly straight. He checked his mangalsutra, ensuring it sat right in the center of his chest. He took a deep, shaky breath, pasted on a carefully blank expression, and walked out of the bedroom, heading for the stairs.
The soft, rhythmic click of his block heels and the bright, musical chime of his silver anklets announced his arrival long before he reached the bottom step.
Vikram and Priya were standing in the living room. Vikram was a tall, powerful, broad-shouldered man, perfectly dressed in a custom navy suit.
When Vikram turned and saw Arjun walking down the stairs, he froze. His dark eyes slowly, hungrily traveled all over Arjun's body. He took in the red sindoor in the parted hair, the gold nose stud, the heavy makeup, the heavily padded blouse pushing against the cotton, the curve of the waist wrapped in the dark blue saree, all the way down to the painted toenails gripping the sandals.
Vikram didn't look shocked at all. He looked utterly, triumphantly amazed. A slow, dark smile spread across his handsome face.
"Arjun," Vikram breathed softly, taking a step toward the stairs. "I had heard rumors through the social circles. Whispers about what you had finally become. But seeing it... you are magnificent."
Arjun felt his face burn with a mixture of deep, humiliating shame and pure, raw fear. All the terror from his college days came flooding back. He moved quickly off the last step to stand right behind Priya, instinctively seeking her physical protection, his hands grabbing the back of her suit jacket tightly.
"What do you want, Vikram?" Priya demanded, shifting her body to block his view of Arjun. "You've seen him. Now say what you came to say and get out."
Vikram walked over to the armchair and sat down, crossing his long legs. He looked entirely comfortable, sitting like a king in the middle of their ruined life.
"I want to help," Vikram said casually, resting his hands on the armrests. "I have a massive, sprawling estate in Alibaug. Total absolute privacy. I want you both to move into the main mansion with me. Rent-free, forever. You can let the bank take this place and walk away clean with no debt."
Priya stared at him, her forehead wrinkled in deep confusion. "Why on earth would you do that?"
"Furthermore," Vikram continued, completely ignoring her question, "I have a position opening up at my firm. Senior Director of Strategy. The salary is double what you were making at your old company, Priya. You can travel to the city office via my private speedboat. You will be back on your feet, more powerful and richer than before, instantly."
Arjun looked at Priya's back. He could see the tension in her shoulders change. He saw the desperate, starving hope flare up in her posture. It was a miracle. It was an impossible way out. They wouldn't lose everything. Arjun wouldn't have to cut his hair, take out his piercings, or put on a men's suit. They would be saved.
"That is... incredibly generous, Vikram," Priya said slowly. Her voice was thick with heavy suspicion, clearly waiting for the catch. "But you are a cutthroat businessman. You don't do charity. Especially not for us."
Vikram smiled. His eyes slid past Priya and locked directly onto Arjun's terrified face, pinning him in place.
"You are right, Priya. It's an exchange," Vikram said smoothly, his voice dropping deeper. "I want Arjun."
The room went completely dead silent. Only the low hum of the air conditioner could be heard.
"Excuse me?" Priya said, her voice barely a whisper.
"I told you back in our dorm room, Arjun," Vikram said, his gaze burning into Arjun's heavily kohl-lined eyes. "I saw this inside you. I knew exactly what you were. But you were so terrified. You ran away from me and hid behind a fake, tough male act for years. But this?" Vikram gestured lazily at Arjun's saree, his padding, and his jewelry. "This beautiful, domesticated creature you have become? This is exactly what I have always wanted. You did all the hard work of breaking him out for me, Priya."
"He is my husband," Priya spat out, her protective anger finally breaking through her absolute shock. "We love each other."
"He wears a mangalsutra, a bindi, and a saree," Vikram countered easily, an arrogant smirk on his lips. "He is your wife. And I am willing to buy his services to save both of your lives."
Vikram leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, all traces of a smile vanishing. "Here are my exact terms. You both move into the main mansion with me. You get the high-powered job, the massive salary, the status, Priya. But Arjun will live as my lover. My companion."
Arjun felt his knees give out. He clung tighter to Priya's jacket just to stay standing. "No," he whimpered, shaking his head fast. "No, please. I don't want you. I love Priya."
"Love," Vikram scoffed gently. "Love doesn't pay the home loan, Arjun. Love is currently asking you to chop off your beautiful long hair, scrape off your nail polish, and go sit in a small office cubicle pretending to be a man for the rest of your miserable life."
Vikram stood up, walking slowly toward them. Priya stood her ground, but Arjun shrank back behind her, terrified of the huge man coming closer.
"You will live in absolute luxury, Arjun," Vikram promised, his voice low, smooth, and very tempting. "You will never wear male clothes again. You will wear the finest silks, the heaviest gold jewelry. There is no domestic staff in the main house, because I know you value your privacy and prefer to manage a home yourself. You will have total run of the estate. Just you, doing your daily chores, maintaining our sanctuary, exactly as you love to do here. But you will be completely mine."
Vikram stopped a few feet away. "But Priya is right. You are married. You love each other. And I demand absolute exclusivity. Your romantic and physical relationship with Priya ends the very moment you step foot in my home."
Vikram's dark eyes stared deeply into Arjun's. "And to guarantee that exclusivity, Arjun, you will wear a steel chastity cage at all times. I will hold the only key. Your body, your desires, your release—they will belong entirely to me, given only if and when I decide. You and Priya will live under the exact same roof, you will see each other every single day, but only as roommates. Nothing more."
Vikram checked his heavy gold watch, the diamonds on the dial catching the light. "I have an early morning flight to London tomorrow. I will be back in exactly three days. I expect your final answer by the time my car pulls up to your driveway."
He didn't wait for a response. He turned around and walked out the front door, pulling it shut behind him with a soft, final click.
The silence he left behind was suffocating. It was heavy with the weight of the impossible, twisted choice hanging in the air.
Arjun slowly walked around Priya, his silver anklets jingling softly, sounding incredibly sad. To say yes meant handing over the very core of his body and his faithfulness to the exact man who had tormented him in his past, locking away his intimacy in cold steel. It meant ending his true marriage to Priya in every single way that mattered, locking away their physical and romantic love forever, just to survive.
He looked up at the large mirror hanging on the living room wall. He saw himself. The long dark hair, the red bindi, the soft swell of the padded blouse, the elegant drape of the saree, the gold jewelry that he and Priya had lovingly chosen together. He saw the woman he had fought so hard, through so much pain and fear, to become—all with Priya's endless love and support.
If they refused Vikram, this woman in the mirror would have to die tomorrow. He would have to shave his face, cut his long hair, put on stiff trousers, and march into a corporate world that would slowly crush his soul, all while watching the love of his life sink into humiliating poverty.
Across the room, Priya was staring blindly at the empty front door. Her face was a mask of pure agony. She looked at Arjun, the man she had married, the man she had loved enough to help bloom into this beautiful, radiant wife. She loved him with a fierce, protective intensity. The thought of handing his intimacy over to Vikram—a man she absolutely hated—and living under the same roof but never being able to hold him as a lover again, made her feel physically sick to her stomach.
But then she looked around their beautiful, massive home, remembering the cardboard box holding the remains of her career in the trunk of her car, the bank accounts showing exactly zero. She thought of the grinding, humiliating poverty waiting for them on the first of the month. She thought of the look of absolute, soul-destroying terror in Arjun's eyes when she had told him he had to go back to work as a man.
Priya stared straight ahead, calculating the unimaginable cost of their survival. Arjun stared at his reflection in the glass, his fingers trembling as they reached up to touch the heavy gold mangalsutra resting on his chest, suddenly wondering if saving the woman he loved meant losing the very freedom she had given him.
