Chapter 2: Shadows of Betrayal
The feast had gone on too long. Surya finally slipped out of the noisy hall The night air felt colder now.
He found Chandrika waiting for him ,near the old armory tower, just like they used to do as kids.
She had changed out of her heavy lehenga into a simple dark dress. When no one else was around, she dropped the formal princess act completely.
She tilted her head.
"You look tense."
Surya remembered the summer they were ten — hiding under the mango trees behind the stables, sharing one stolen bowl of honey while plotting how to sneak into the armory and “borrow” wooden practice swords. She had always been the bolder one.
Chandrika let out a long breath. “Feels like everything’s moving too fast. One minute I’m just… me. Next minute I’m supposed to be someone’s wife.”
She bumped his shoulder lightly .Seeing him feel the chill, she draped her the dark shawl over him playfully. Her shawl with the soft feel sending an unfamiliar warmth across his skin.
“You’re still you,” he said. “Even if you have to wear fancy clothes and smile more. I’ll be right there with you.” She tried to smile.
Before they could continue talking, Chandrika reached up and fixed his crooked collar.
"Mother would complain."
"Mother complains anyway."
"True."
Then footsteps thundered up the stairs.
Kiran burst up the spiral stairs, breathing hard. He was Surya’s oldest friend and the only captain the prince trusted with his life — a lean, sharp-eyed man who had trained beside him since they were boys.
“Eastern gate. Two riders. Both dead.”
30 minutes later,Mahaveer emerged with a savage grin. His hands and forearms were slick with fresh blood . In his fist he still held a crumpled piece of parchment.
“They won't be sending another message,” Mahaveer said, voice low and satisfied. He tossed the bloodied message at Surya’s feet. “They knew about the wedding. One of them laughed before I opened his throat—said Viran would never get his bride.”
Surya’s blood ran cold as he read the crude script: *The princess is the key. Strike before the alliance is sealed.*
Mahaveer wiped his dagger clean. “Kalakeya's getting lazy. Sent boys instead of soldiers. This marriage is no longer just politics. It is survival.” His eyes locked on Surya. “If I have to drag her to the wedding in chains, I will. It's best if she agrees to the marriage, I have other ways of convincing if you fail to make her agree”
He wiped the last of the blood from his dagger with slow, deliberate strokes, never looking away from Surya.
Mahaveer’s voice lost its playful edge, hardening into the cold, pragmatic calculation of a general who weighed lives in numbers.
Later, he met Chandrika. She hugged her knees tightly, her usual playful energy gone.
“You okay?” Surya asked.
She shook her head. For a long moment she was silent, staring into the darkness. When she finally spoke, her voice was barely a whisper, trembling with raw terror.
“I can’t do this, Surya. I can’t marry King Viran.” She looked up, eyes shining with unshed tears. “Every time I imagine King Viran’s hands on me, I want to scream. I tried to be the dutiful princess… but I can’t bury my heart. Not even for the kingdom.”
She grabbed his wrist, grip surprisingly strong.
“If this marriage happens, I will die inside. Sometimes I wish I could just disappear. Run away with her and never look back.”
Surya felt the words hit him like a blade under the ribs. For a moment he could not breathe. The sister he had protected his whole life was already halfway gone, and he had no idea how to stop it.
Surya opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
He stood there in the cold dark, the smell of jasmine from her shawl still on his skin, and understood for the first time that the real danger was no longer outside the walls.
