By the time Archana reached the dance academy, the heaviness of the morning had almost disappeared. The familiar sound of ankle bells came from inside. She could hear the rhythmic counting of the students, the occasional correction from the teacher, and the soft music playing in the background. For the first time that day, Archana smiled genuinely. This place had slowly become one of the few places where she didn't have to explain herself. She was simply Archana. As she reached the entrance, Prakash appeared in front of her. “Wait.” Archana stopped. “What?” Prakash was trying very hard not to laugh. “We have a problem.” Archana raised an eyebrow. “What problem?” “Our class is becoming too famous.” Archana stared at him. Then she burst out laughing. “What nonsense are you talking about?” Prakash laughed too. “I'm serious!” He pulled out a sheet of paper. “Since last week's dance video went viral, we've been getting enquiries almost every day.” Archana looked at the paper. “And?” “We've already enrolled eighteen new students in the last week.” Archana's eyes widened. “Eighteen?” “Eighteen.” She playfully punched him on the chest. “Then why are you standing here telling me this like you've discovered a national crisis?” Prakash laughed. “Because if we keep the old schedule, Amma will collapse.” That immediately made Archana stop laughing. “What do you mean?” “More students means more batches.” He showed her the sheet. “I've worked out a new schedule.” Archana read it. “Weekdays: six to seven.” She continued. “Seven to eight. Eight to nine. Eleven to twelve. Three to four. Five to six. Six to seven.” She looked up. “And weekends?” “Six to eight. Eight-thirty to ten-thirty. Eleven to one. Two to four. Four to six.” Prakash pointed toward the final column. “Maximum ten students per batch.” Archana studied the chart carefully. “Ten?” “Yes.” “So everyone gets enough space.” “Exactly.” “And Amma doesn't have to handle twenty or thirty people at once.” “Exactly.” Archana looked at him for another second. Then she smiled. “This is actually good.” Prakash grinned. “I told you.” “No, you didn't. You just said we had a problem.” “That's because I wanted to see your reaction.” Archana shook her head. “You're impossible.” Prakash laughed. “Anyway, what batch do you want?” Archana looked at the timetable again. “I'll decide later.” “Fine.” Then she suddenly looked around. “But I have one question.” “What?” “This famous dancer who caused all this…” She pointed dramatically toward the studio. “I want to meet her.” Prakash smiled. “Really?” “Yes.” “She's already here.” Archana looked around. “Where?” Prakash pointed toward the large mirror. Archana looked at her reflection. She stared. Then turned toward him. “Stop it.” Prakash burst out laughing. “I'm serious!” “Are you kidding me?” Before Prakash could answer, his mother came out of the classroom. She had heard the conversation. She smiled. “He's telling the truth, ma.” Archana turned toward her. “Amma?” The teacher nodded. “In one week, we actually enrolled eighteen new students.” She looked proudly at her son. “He came to me with this schedule and asked how we could accommodate everyone without exhausting ourselves.” Then she looked at Archana. “He has been working on this for days.” Archana smiled at Prakash. “You actually thought this through.” Prakash shrugged. “Someone has to.” His mother took the paper from Archana. She read it carefully. “This is very good.” She touched Prakash's head affectionately. “Good thinking.” Then she looked at Archana. “And you…” She smiled. “You brought all this attention to us.” Archana immediately became embarrassed. “I didn't do anything.” The teacher laughed. “That's what everyone says after becoming famous.” The class began. But today was different. Archana was no longer treated like someone who simply attended a regular dance class. Her teacher moved her toward the more advanced students. “Come.” Archana looked surprised. “Me?” “Yes.” “But—” “No excuses.” The teacher smiled. “You have your own performance coming.” Archana's expression changed. “My performance?” “Of course.” The teacher's voice became serious. “Chithirai Thiruvizha is coming in three months.” Archana's eyes widened. “And your arangetram will be part of the celebration.” Archana stared at her. “At the big temple?” “Yes.” The words sank in. A temple performance. A proper public performance. Not as punishment. Not because somebody forced her onto a stage. But because her teacher believed she was ready. Archana slowly smiled. “I'll practice.” “I know.” The teacher began the advanced lesson. The class was harder than usual. Every movement had to be precise. Every expression had to carry meaning. Every step had to land correctly. Whenever Archana made a mistake, her teacher corrected her immediately. Again. Again. Again. By the end of the session, Archana was exhausted. But she was happy. The teacher gave her homework. “Practice these sequences at home.” “Yes, ma'am.” “And don't neglect your expressions.” “I won't.” “And practice every day.” Archana nodded. “In three months, you're performing in front of a temple audience.” She smiled. “So work hard.” When the class ended, Archana was exhausted enough that she barely noticed how hungry she was. The teacher disappeared into the kitchen. A few minutes later, she returned with a plate. Rice. Sambar. A simple home-cooked meal. She held it out. “Eat.” Archana immediately shook her head. “No, ma. I'm not hungry.” The teacher gave her a look. “You're not hungry?” Archana smiled weakly. “No.” “You've been dancing for hours.” “I'm okay.” The teacher sat beside her. “Archana.” “Yes?” “You're hungry.” Archana laughed. “Maybe a little.” “You're tired.” She nodded. “And you're trying to pretend you're neither.” Archana looked down. The teacher placed the plate in her hands. “Eat.” Archana didn't argue anymore. She began eating. Slowly at first. Then a little faster. The teacher smiled. “See?” Archana smiled shyly. “I was trying to avoid troubling you.” “You're not troubling me.” She gently tapped Archana's shoulder. “Eat properly.” For Archana, the meal felt strangely comforting. There was no demand. No punishment. No expectation. Just someone noticing that she was hungry and making sure she ate. By the time she finished, Archana could barely keep her eyes open. She stood. “I should go home.” Prakash picked up his keys. “I'll drop you.” “You don't have to.” “I know.” He smiled. “I'm still going.” Archana laughed. “Fine.” The ride home was quiet. Archana sat beside him, staring out the window. Her eyes kept closing. Prakash glanced at her. “You're falling asleep.” “No.” “You are.” “No.” A few minutes later, she was almost completely asleep. Prakash smiled and continued driving. When they reached Archana's house, she slowly opened her eyes. The porch was empty. No cars. She smiled with relief. “At least they've all gone.” Prakash looked at her. “Who?” “My relatives.” “Oh.” He understood. Archana got out. “Thank you for dropping me.” “Tomorrow?” “I'll come.” “Good.” Prakash waited until she entered the house before driving away. Archana stepped inside. Something immediately felt wrong. The house was silent. Not peaceful. Unnaturally silent. She stopped near the entrance. Usually, even when nobody was speaking, she could hear the television, someone moving around, dishes in the kitchen, or Suresh and Lakshmi talking. Now there was nothing. Archana looked around. “Kavitha?” No answer. She called again. “Kavitha?” After a few seconds, Kavitha appeared. Archana looked at her face. “What happened?” Kavitha didn't answer immediately. Archana frowned. “Why is everyone so quiet?” Kavitha slowly walked toward her. “Akka…” “What?” “What happened today…” Archana sat down. “Tell me.” Kavitha explained everything. The relatives had stayed after Archana left. They had asked when Arjun would return. Suresh had told them he would probably come back the next night or Monday morning because he had gone on a trip with his friends. Then the relatives had started lecturing their parents. They had criticized their parenting. They had said Suresh and Lakshmi should have controlled their son more strictly. They had compared Archana with other children in the family. And then they had started talking about the maid. Kavitha continued. “They said Amma was giving the maid too much freedom.” Archana frowned. “They said that?” Kavitha nodded. “They told Amma she didn't know how to run the family.” Archana sighed. “So?” Kavitha looked down. “Amma got angry.” “How angry?” Kavitha swallowed. “She told them everything.” Archana's expression changed. “Everything?” Kavitha nodded. “She told them who you really are.” For a few seconds, Archana simply stared at her. Then she sighed. “Why did she do that?” Kavitha looked at her. “She couldn't take it anymore.” Before Archana could respond, Lakshmi came quickly from the other room. The moment she saw her daughter, she walked straight toward her. She didn't explain. She didn't defend herself. She didn't even speak. She simply hugged Archana. “Amma?” Lakshmi held her tightly. “I'm sorry.” Archana immediately understood. “Amma…” “I'm sorry.” Lakshmi's voice broke. “I saw you today.” Archana remained silent. “I saw how much you worked.” Lakshmi was crying now. “You cooked for everyone.” “You served everyone.” “You cleaned everything.” “And you barely ate.” Archana gently placed her hand on her mother's shoulder. “Amma, I did it because I chose to.” “No.” Lakshmi shook her head. “You did it because everyone expected you to.” She pulled back and looked into Archana's eyes. “And I allowed it.” Archana wiped her mother's tears. “Please don't cry.” Lakshmi hugged her again. “I failed you.” “No, Amma.” “I failed you.” Archana smiled softly. “Leave it.” Lakshmi shook her head. “I can't.” Archana sighed. “Then don't think about it now.” Lakshmi looked at her tired face. “You must be hungry.” Archana smiled. “No.” “You ate?” “Yes.” “Where?” “At teacher's house.” Lakshmi looked surprised. “I tried to avoid eating.” She yawned. “But she knew I was tired and hungry.” Another yawn. “She wouldn't let me refuse.” Lakshmi smiled faintly. “Good.” Archana stood. “I'm really sleepy.” “Then go and sleep.” Archana nodded. “Good night, Amma.” She walked toward her room. At the doorway, she turned. “Don't worry about them.” Lakshmi looked at her. “They're not important anymore.” Then Archana disappeared into her bedroom. Fifteen minutes later, Lakshmi and Suresh quietly walked to her room. Lakshmi opened the door slightly. Archana was already fast asleep. She hadn't even properly arranged the pillow. She had simply collapsed onto the bed after an exhausting day. The clock showed 7:18 p.m. Suresh looked at his daughter. Lakshmi looked at her too. Neither spoke. Finally, Lakshmi whispered, “She looks so tired.” Suresh nodded. “She is.” Lakshmi stood silently for another moment. Then she gently pulled the blanket over Archana. She touched her daughter's hair. “Sleep, ma.” Archana didn't wake. Lakshmi quietly closed the door. For eight months, they had worried about changing their child. Tonight, they understood something far more important. They didn't need to change Archana. They needed to change the way they loved her. And perhaps that was the change that mattered most.
