Part 66

Sunday morning arrived quietly.
For the first time in several days, the house had no tension hanging over it.
Breakfast was already finished. Suresh, Lakshmi, Archana and Kavitha were sitting together in the living room, watching a Sunday television program.
Archana sat comfortably beside Kavitha, occasionally laughing at something on the screen.
It felt ordinary.
It felt like home.
Then the calling bell rang.
Kavitha got up.
“I'll open it.”
She opened the door and immediately smiled.
“Athai!”
Standing outside was her father's sister.
Beside her was Reshma, her daughter, who was studying in her second year of college.
Unlike the previous day, Athai had come alone with her daughter.
But she was carrying several bags.
Two silk sarees.
One for Lakshmi.
One for Archana.
A beautiful lehenga-choli for Kavitha.
There were also boxes of sweets and flowers.
Kavitha looked at everything.
“Athai, why so much?”
Her aunt smiled.
“Yesterday I came with everyone else.”
She looked toward the house.
“Today I wanted to come properly.”
Kavitha stepped aside.
“Come in.”
The moment Athai entered, her eyes searched the room.
Then she saw Archana.
She stopped.
Yesterday, she had seen this same person working in the kitchen.
Today, Archana was sitting with her family.
No tray.
No commands.
No work.
Just a daughter sitting comfortably in her own home.
Athai's eyes immediately filled with tears.
“Archana…”
Archana stood.
“Athai.”
Athai walked straight toward her.
She didn't say anything.
She simply embraced Archana.
Archana's arms went around her aunt.
“Athai…”
Her aunt kissed her forehead.
“I am sorry.”
Archana closed her eyes.
“It's okay.”
“No.”
Athai held her tighter.
“Let me say it.”
Her voice trembled.
“I saw you yesterday and I didn't recognize you.”
Archana gently stroked her back.
“You didn't know.”
“But I should have known.”
She kissed Archana's forehead again.
“You are my brother's child.”
Her voice broke.
“I should have seen you.”
Archana smiled sadly.
“I am still here.”
Athai pulled back and looked at her face.
“Yes.”
She touched her cheek.
“You are.”
Then she turned toward Lakshmi.
“Anni…”
Lakshmi stood.
Athai held her hands.
“I'm sorry.”
Lakshmi nodded.
Then Athai turned toward her brother.
“Thambi…”
Suresh embraced his sister.
“Enough, Akka.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
But eventually she smiled.
Athai placed the gifts on the table.
“This is for you, Anni.”
She handed Lakshmi the silk saree.
“This is for Archana.”
Archana touched the fabric.
“Athai, it's beautiful.”
“I saw the colour and thought of you.”
Then she handed Kavitha the lehenga-choli.
Kavitha immediately smiled.
“Thank you!”
Finally came the sweets and flowers.
Lakshmi took the flowers and instinctively divided them.
One portion for herself.
One for Archana.
One for Kavitha.
Then she looked at Athai and Reshma.
“What about you two?”
She divided the remaining flowers.
Five equal portions.
Soon all five women had flowers in their hair.
Athai looked at Archana again.
Five minutes.
That's all it took.
She simply watched her niece.
The way she smiled.
The way she spoke.
The way she sat.
The way she adjusted the flowers in her hair.
And suddenly Athai began crying again.
Lakshmi immediately moved beside her.
“Akka…”
Athai shook her head.
“I'm fine.”
But Lakshmi knew she wasn't.
The tears weren't simply about yesterday.
Lakshmi didn't yet understand the reason.
But Athai did.
She was grieving something she had carried silently for years.
A future.
A dream.
A picture of her family that she had constructed in her mind.
And now that picture was breaking apart.
Archana watched her aunt quietly.
Then she stood.
“I'll make coffee.”
She walked into the kitchen.
While Archana prepared coffee, Athai leaned toward Lakshmi.
“Anni…”
“Yes?”
“She cooks lunch herself?”
Lakshmi smiled.
“She won't let me help.”
Athai looked surprised.
“Why?”
Lakshmi laughed.
“It's an internal war.”
“What war?”
“If she cooks, she says I shouldn't command her.”
Athai laughed.
“And if you cook?”
“Then she says I shouldn't command her either.”
Both women laughed.
Lakshmi shook her head.
“It isn't really about cooking.”
“Then what?”
“Who is in charge.”
They laughed again.
Athai looked toward the kitchen.
“She really has changed.”
Lakshmi's smile became softer.
“Yes.”
Meanwhile, Reshma and Kavitha were sitting together.
Reshma looked toward the kitchen.
“Akka is very different.”
Kavitha nodded.
“You've only seen the outside.”
“Tell me.”
Kavitha explained.
The eight months.
The restrictions.
The college.
The household work.
The restaurant job.
The harassment.
The public transport.
The emotional changes.
The investigation.
The family's realization.
Reshma listened quietly.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Amma was already worried about all this.”
Kavitha looked at her.
“I know.”
Reshma sighed.
“She thinks about relatives.”
“Status.”
“What people will say.”
Kavitha nodded.
“And your college relationship.”
Reshma looked embarrassed.
“Yes.”
Athai already knew that Reshma was in love with a boy from college.
That was one of the reasons yesterday's family gathering had happened.
The relatives had been discussing marriage.
Athai had wanted to settle the matter.
She knew Reshma loved someone.
But she was frightened.
What if the boy was unsuitable?
What would relatives say?
What about the family's status?
What if people talked?
What if Reshma made a mistake?
Athai had been carrying all those fears.
And Archana knew it.
Perhaps more than anyone expected.
Lunch began to take shape in the kitchen.
Archana prepared soya-chunk fry.
Vatha kuzhambu.
Chow-chow kootu.
Rasam.
White rice.
The aroma slowly spread through the house.
Athai watched quietly.
She still couldn't understand how someone who had barely entered a kitchen before those eight months could now cook with such confidence.
When everything was ready, Archana came out.
“Please sit.”
Everyone moved toward the dining table.
Lakshmi immediately said,
“Archana, you sit and eat.”
“I'll serve first.”
She began serving.
Athai tasted the food.
Her expression changed.
The food was simple.
Vegetarian.
Traditional.
But perfectly balanced.
She looked at Lakshmi.
“How did she learn all this?”
Lakshmi smiled.
“Eight months.”
Athai stared.
Kavitha laughed.
“Athai, that's not even the biggest surprise.”
“What is?”
“She's performing an arangetram.”
Athai looked at Archana.
“What?”
“During Chithirai Thiruvizha.”
“At the big temple.”
Reshma's eyes widened.
“Arangetram?”
She was herself a trained classical dancer and had completed her own arangetram six years earlier.
She looked at Archana with genuine admiration.
“Akka, really?”
Archana smiled shyly.
“Yes.”
Reshma immediately smiled.
“That's wonderful.”
Athai stared at her niece.
For a few seconds, she looked almost lost.
Then she asked,
“Really?”
Archana stopped eating.
She placed her spoon down.
She stood.
Washed her hands.
Walked outside to the front porch.
She remained there for two minutes.
Then she returned.
She sat down and quietly resumed eating.
Lakshmi noticed.
“Archana?”
“Hmm?”
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
She smiled.
“Why are you all looking at me?”
Nobody questioned her further.
But Athai remembered.
She remembered that little moment.
She didn't understand it yet.
After lunch, Kavitha suddenly picked up her phone.
“Athai, Reshma, wait.”
She connected the television.
“I want to show you something.”
The video started.
“Radhai Manathil.”
Archana's classical performance filled the screen.
Reshma watched carefully.
Her trained eye followed every movement.
She smiled.
“She's really good.”
Athai watched without speaking.
When the performance ended, Reshma turned toward Archana.
“Congratulations.”
“Thank you.”
“I hope your arangetram goes beautifully.”
Archana smiled.
Athai, however, was crying again.
This time Archana didn't hesitate.
She moved beside her aunt.
“Athai?”
Her aunt wiped her eyes.
“Nothing.”
Archana hugged her.
Then she gently placed her hand on Athai's head.
Athai closed her eyes.
Archana immediately understood.
She looked at her aunt.
“Athai…”
Her aunt tried to smile.
“I'm okay.”
“No.”
Archana smiled softly.
“I know why you're crying.”
Athai froze.
Lakshmi and Suresh exchanged glances.
Kavitha looked directly at Reshma.
She raised her eyebrows.
I told you.
Reshma's eyes widened.
Archana continued.
“You already knew about Reshma's love.”
Athai looked at her daughter.
Her face changed.
“You knew?”
Archana smiled.
“I know you.”
She gently held Athai's hand.
“You're not angry because she loves someone.”
Athai said nothing.
“You're frightened.”
“About relatives.”
“About status.”
“About what people will say.”
Athai's eyes filled again.
“You want your daughter to have a good life.”
She squeezed her aunt's hand.
“And you don't want one decision to become something the whole family talks about.”
Athai whispered,
“Yes.”
Archana smiled.
“Athai, loving someone isn't wrong.”
Reshma looked at her mother.
Archana continued.
“What matters is whether the person she loves respects her.”
“Whether he supports her.”
“Whether he has good character.”
“Whether he is responsible.”
“Whether she is genuinely happy with him.”
She paused.
“Not whether the relatives approve.”
Athai looked stunned.
Archana then turned toward Reshma.
She placed her hand gently on Reshma's head.
Reshma smiled.
“Akka…”
Archana said,
“You know exactly what I'm talking about.”
Reshma nodded.
Athai stared at her daughter.
Then at Archana.
“You know the boy?”
Archana smiled.
“I know enough.”
Reshma became embarrassed.
Archana laughed softly.
“He's a good boy, Athai.”
Athai looked completely surprised.
“He's from a middle-class family.”
“He isn't someone chasing money.”
“He has good morals.”
“He has a good reputation.”
“And he isn't trying to rush her into anything.”
Athai listened silently.
“He has loved her for around five years.”
“Since school.”
Reshma lowered her eyes.
“And Reshma didn't accept him immediately.”
Archana smiled.
“She thought about it.”
“She took her time.”
“And only after she was certain did she accept his feelings.”
Reshma smiled shyly.
Archana turned toward Athai.
“So don't make a marriage arrangement based only on what relatives will say.”
“Talk to your daughter.”
“Ask her what she wants.”
“And then decide together.”
Athai looked at Reshma.
Her daughter nodded.
“I wanted to tell you, Amma.”
Athai's eyes filled.
“Why didn't you?”
“I was afraid.”
Athai pulled her daughter into an embrace.
For a moment, mother and daughter simply held each other.
Archana smiled.
Then she turned toward Athai.
“You don't have to destroy your dream.”
Athai looked at her.
“Just change the dream.”
Athai couldn't answer.
Archana continued gently.
“Maybe you imagined one kind of future.”
“Life gave you another.”
“That doesn't mean the future is bad.”
“It just means it isn't the future you imagined.”
Athai began crying again.
This time Archana understood completely.
After a while, the conversation became lighter.
Athai finally smiled.
But before leaving, Reshma suddenly looked at Archana.
“Akka…”
“Yes?”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Ask.”
“Why did you suddenly go outside while we were eating?”
Archana immediately became embarrassed.
Her cheeks turned red.
She looked at Lakshmi.
Then at Kavitha.
Then at Reshma.
Finally she leaned toward Reshma.
“Only ladies can hear this.”
Reshma leaned closer.
Archana whispered something.
Reshma's eyes widened.
Then she covered her mouth.
“Oh!”
Kavitha immediately started laughing.
Athai looked confused.
“What happened?”
Archana was now completely embarrassed.
She finally admitted quietly,
“I felt… you know…”
She searched for a polite word.
“Farting.”
The room went silent for one second.
Then Kavitha burst out laughing.
Reshma laughed too.
Even Suresh couldn't suppress a smile.
Archana covered her face.
“Why did I tell you?”
Athai stared at her.
Then she began laughing through her tears.
It was such an ordinary embarrassment.
Such a natural reaction.
And somehow, for Athai and Reshma, it settled something that had remained uncertain in their minds.
There had been no performance.
No carefully constructed explanation.
No attempt to prove anything.
Archana had simply behaved naturally.
Just like any young woman embarrassed by an awkward bodily moment in front of family.
Athai looked at her.
And for the first time since yesterday, she didn't search Archana's face for Arjun.
She simply saw Archana.
Her brother's child.
Her niece.
Her family.
At the doorway, Athai held Archana's hands.
“I'll come again.”
Archana smiled.
“Come whenever you want.”
Athai hugged her.
Reshma hugged her too.
“Good luck for your arangetram.”
“Thank you.”
They walked toward their car.
Athai turned back once.
Archana was standing beside Lakshmi.
Kavitha was beside them.
Suresh stood behind them.
The whole family was together.
Athai smiled.
Yesterday, she had believed she was coming to correct something.
Today, she understood that perhaps nothing needed correcting.
She simply needed to accept what life had already placed before her.
The dream she had carried for years had changed.
But her love for her brother's child had not.
And perhaps that was the one thing that had never depended on names, appearances, marriage plans, relatives, status or society.
It had simply been love.
