Part 71

Lakshmi stood quietly at the edge of the terrace.
She didn't interrupt anyone.
She simply watched.
Below her, the terrace looked nothing like the life she had imagined for her family a year earlier.
Suresh—the man who had spent most of his life talking about principles, discipline, responsibility and doing things the proper way—was sitting comfortably among his son's friends, laughing and drinking with them.
Kavitha was sitting beside her brother, happily eating snacks and drinking a cool drink while arguing with Rohit about something that didn't seem important at all.
Arjun was there too.
Sometimes everyone called him Arjun.
Sometimes Archana.
Nobody stopped to think about it anymore.
The friends who Lakshmi had once feared were a bad influence were sitting around him as though nothing about him had ever been strange.
They had never abandoned him.
They had never laughed at him for wearing a saree.
They had never treated his feminine mannerisms as something shameful.
They had never told him that he needed to become someone else before they would accept him.
They had simply remained his friends.
And tonight, after watching both of his performances, Lakshmi finally understood something she had been unable to understand for months.
His identity had never been determined by a piece of clothing.
It wasn't determined by a saree.
It wasn't determined by trousers.
It wasn't determined by whether his movements appeared masculine or feminine.
It was something deeper.
It was the person inside who knew what he believed, what he valued and how he wanted to express himself.
He could be Arjun.
He could be Archana.
He could dance Shiva.
He could dance Shakti.
And none of those things made him less of the child she had given birth to.
Lakshmi smiled quietly.
A year ago, she had thought their family looked perfect.
From outside, everything had been in place.
A successful husband.
A respectable wife.
A son studying well.
A daughter preparing for her future.
A family that appeared disciplined and respectable to everyone around them.
But inside that perfect picture, something had already been breaking.
They simply hadn't realized it.
Now the picture looked different.
Perhaps, to some people, the family looked broken.
Perhaps some relatives would still whisper.
Perhaps some neighbours would never understand.
Perhaps some people would continue asking questions.
But Lakshmi no longer cared.
Because when she looked at the terrace, she saw something much more valuable.
A loving husband.
Children who had become emotionally stronger.
Friends who had proved themselves.
A family that could disagree without destroying one another.
A home where nobody needed permission from society to be themselves.
She laughed softly to herself.
"What a strange year."
Her marriage had changed too.
That was something she rarely admitted aloud.
Suresh was still the same man in many ways.
He still worked hard.
He still believed in honesty.
He still wanted to do what was right.
But he no longer allowed work, reputation or principles to consume every part of his life.
He had learned to come home.
To sit with her.
To talk.
To laugh.
To hold her hand.
To remember that marriage wasn't merely a partnership for paying bills and raising children.
There was affection too.
There was companionship.
There was romance.
And Lakshmi had finally understood that.
She smiled to herself.
If anyone ever asked how she had learned that lesson, she could never explain it properly.
She certainly couldn't tell them that some of the most important advice about her marriage had come from her daughter.
A daughter who was still young.
A daughter who had never experienced married life herself.
Yet somehow Archana had made her mother understand something about love that Lakshmi had forgotten.
Life was strange.
Very strange.
Lakshmi looked back toward the gathering.
Archana was holding a bottle of Heineken 0.0.
Vikram was explaining something to her.
Lakshmi could hear only fragments.
"It tastes almost like beer..."
Archana took another sip.
Vikram laughed.
"...but no alcohol."
Archana made a face.
"It tastes weird."
"It's supposed to."
Rohit laughed.
"Why are you drinking it then?"
Archana shrugged.
"Because everyone else is."
Kavitha immediately said,
"That's not a good reason."
Archana pointed at her.
"You were eating pakoda five minutes ago because everyone else was."
Kavitha laughed.
"Fair."
Lakshmi smiled.
She had never imagined this scene.
Her daughter—or son, depending on the moment—sitting comfortably among friends who had once terrified her.
And yet there was no fear in Lakshmi now.
Only affection.
Suresh noticed Lakshmi standing alone.
He stood up.
"Why are you standing there?"
"I'm just watching."
"Come here."
"I'll disturb you."
"You are my wife. How can you disturb me?"
He walked over and took her hand.
Lakshmi laughed.
"Suresh..."
"Come."
He led her toward the group and pulled a chair beside him.
"Sit here."
She sat down.
Suresh immediately returned to his conversation with Rohit and Vikram about their proposed business.
"So if you're going to use the restitution money, don't rush."
Rohit nodded.
"We understand."
"First rent a small office."
"Yes."
"Then research properly."
"Yes."
"Don't spend money trying to look successful."
Karthick laughed.
"Uncle, that's exactly what we were planning."
Suresh laughed.
"Then I'm saving you from yourselves."
Lakshmi listened.
She looked around.
The boys were talking business.
Kavitha was eating.
Archana was listening.
Prakash was discussing his future corporate career.
Nobody was worried about appearances.
Nobody was trying to impress an imaginary audience.
Nobody was asking whether the neighbours would approve.
Lakshmi felt something loosen inside her.
Suresh opened another bottle.
He looked toward Lakshmi.
"Try this."
She frowned.
"What?"
"Heineken 0.0."
"I don't drink beer."
"This doesn't contain alcohol."
Vikram immediately explained,
"It's basically a beer-style drink without alcohol. The taste is similar, but there's no alcohol content."
Lakshmi looked suspiciously at the bottle.
"You people are giving me strange things."
Suresh laughed.
"Just taste it."
He opened one and handed it to her.
Lakshmi took a small sip.
Her face immediately changed.
"Strange."
Everyone laughed.
Arjun said,
"I told you!"
Lakshmi took another sip.
"It is strange."
"But?"
She smiled.
"Maybe I'll get used to it."
Suresh laughed.
"That's my wife."
She raised the bottle.
"Don't make this into a habit."
"Of course."
Everyone laughed again.
For a few minutes, Lakshmi simply sat there.
She looked at Arjun.
Then Archana.
Then she smiled.
She knew now that the future would not necessarily be easy.
There would still be difficulties.
There would still be people who didn't understand.
There would be choices that would be complicated.
There would be careers, relationships, marriage questions, financial decisions and countless unknowns.
But she wasn't afraid of the future anymore.
Her children were growing up.
They could think.
They could make decisions.
They could make mistakes.
And they could recover.
She didn't need to build a perfect future for them.
She only needed to make sure they knew where home was.
That was enough.
Archana suddenly stood up.
"Amma, we're running out of food."
Lakshmi looked at her.
"There's more downstairs."
"I'll bring it."
She walked toward the stairs.
Kavitha shouted,
"Bring the chicken!"
"Yes!"
"And the fish!"
"Yes!"
"And don't forget the..."
"Enough!"
Everyone laughed.
Archana disappeared downstairs.
Lakshmi watched her go.
Then she looked at Suresh.
He was still talking with the boys.
The music continued.
The lights of the terrace glowed softly.
The night air moved through the open space.
Lakshmi smiled.
A year earlier, she had been worried about what society would say.
Tonight, she realized something much simpler.
Society wasn't living in this house.
Her family was.
And this family had survived.
Not because everything had gone according to plan.
Not because they had remained perfect.
Not because everyone outside understood them.
They survived because, eventually, they learned to listen to one another.
They learned to apologize.
They learned to forgive.
They learned that love could not always be expressed through control.
They learned that children were not projects to be corrected.
They learned that a marriage needed affection, not merely responsibility.
And they learned that a family did not become strong by looking perfect from outside.
It became strong when its members could come home exactly as they were.
Lakshmi took another sip of the strange drink and laughed at herself.
"One year..."
She shook her head.
"What a year."
From downstairs, Archana shouted,
"Amma! Where are the serving plates?"
Lakshmi immediately stood.
"In the kitchen cupboard!"
"Which one?"
"The second one!"
"Okay!"
Suresh laughed.
"Your daughter needs you."
Lakshmi smiled.
"My children always will."
She walked toward the stairs.
Behind her, the music continued.
The boys kept talking about their future.
Kavitha continued studying whenever she wasn't eating.
Suresh continued laughing.
And somewhere downstairs, Archana was bringing more food.
The days would continue.
The years would continue.
The family would change again.
But for tonight, there was nothing left to fix.
Nothing left to prove.
Nothing left to explain.
There was only a family sitting together under the Chithirai night sky, finally comfortable with the imperfect, complicated and beautiful life they had become.
But in her heart, one thing from the mythology of Mahabharata still ran on. Exactly one year later, Arjun was the one who knew his curse was broken, and he became Arjuna again from Brihannala, maybe, just maybe.
It still had 2 months to go. It all started in the 2nd week of July, and it was now the first week of May. Maybe in 2 months, Lakshmi just hoped. And she smiled as she went to join them.
