Chapter 3 – The Hotel Room Transformation

The hotel room looked harsher in daylight. A single fluorescent tube buzzed overhead, throwing hard light across the narrow bed, the cracked mirror above the dresser, and the thin curtain that didn’t quite reach the sill. Outside, the city’s night traffic murmured like distant surf.

The next morning, Manav stood in the centre of the room in the baby-doll nightie.

Yesterday had been preparation.

Today was different. The clothes were no longer the point.

Chameli wanted to know whether Manav could move through the world in them without giving himself away. Chameli leaned against the wall near the door, arms folded and playing with her glass bangles.

He cleared his throat. “I should… take a bath"

"Start with another round of quick shaving” she said

After his bath, he came back with a towel wrapped tightly around himself. Chameli chuckled at how carefully he avoided her eyes.

He found the working clothes from yesterday's bags: padded push-up bra, soft micro-skirt, sheer stockings, blouse that would cling once damp with night air.

He picked up the bra. The cups were heavier than they looked. He slipped the straps over his shoulders, settled the padding against his chest, and reached behind himself for the hooks. His fingers found the first one, slipped, found it again. The second refused to catch.

“Could you—” He turned halfway, arms twisted awkwardly. “Just tighten these?”

Chameli folded her arms tighter. “Learn yourself. No one will do it for you on the beach.”

Heat climbed his neck. He turned back to the mirror and fought the hooks in silence, muttering under his breath while the underwires dug into his ribs. After three tries the clasp finally held. The padding lifted and rounded what had never been there. He stared at the shape for a long second before looking away. He rolled two socks into tight bundles and slipped them into the cups to fill them out.

Chameli’s voice came again, calm and matter-of-fact. “Before the stockings. You need to tuck.”

Manav froze. “Tuck?”

“Your cock. Pull it back, push the balls up, keep everything flat. Otherwise the panties and the skirt will show everything the first time a client looks too long.” She made a small circular motion with one finger. “Do it.”

He stared at her. “I’m not doing that while you’re watching.”

She raised one eyebrow. “How am I supposed to tell you if you’re doing it wrong if I can’t see?”

“Close your eyes.”

“No.”

“Chameli—”

“I’ve seen worse than whatever you’re hiding under that towel,” she said, almost amused. “You’re not the first man who’s stood in this room trying to look like a girl. Stop being dramatic and just do it.”

His face burned. He turned his back to her, dropped the towel, and tried to follow the vague instructions he’d half-heard from the other girls. The first attempt was clumsy—everything slipped, the pressure felt wrong, and a small, involuntary sound escaped his throat at the sudden, tight confinement.

Chameli sighed. “Turn around.”

“No.”

“Manav. Turn around. I’m not going to touch you. I’m only going to tell you where you’re going wrong.”

He hesitated another three seconds, then slowly faced her, one hand still cupped protectively. Her gaze dropped, completely clinical, as if she were examining a map.

“You’re pulling too hard on the shaft and not high enough on the balls,” she said. “Gently. Cup them, push them up into the sockets, then bring the cock back between your legs. Hold it there with the other hand while you pull the panties up. The fabric does the rest.”

He followed the instructions, face hot, eyes fixed somewhere past her shoulder. The sensation was strange—tight, smooth and almost weightless once everything was in place. His body felt unfamiliar, compressed into a shape he had never imagined himself wearing.

Chameli gave a short nod. “Better. Now the panties. Don’t let it slip.”

He stepped into the soft briefs carefully, pulling them up high on his hips. The front pouch cupped the tucked shape, pressing everything into a smooth, almost feminine line. When he looked down, the outline was gone. Only the soft curve of the padded bra and the flat front of the panties remained.

Chameli’s mouth twitched. “See? Not so difficult. You look almost convincing already.”

He muttered something under his breath that might have been a curse. She only folded her arms again, the green bangle catching the light.

“Stockings next,” she said. “And try not to blush the whole time. Clients notice that too.”

He sat on the edge of the bed and rolled the sheer nylon up one leg, then the other. The fabric whispered against freshly shaved skin. When he stood, the micro-skirt barely covered the tops of the stockings. The blouse buttoned tightly across the padded chest. He felt the weight of every piece settling into place.

Chameli pointed at the small jar of foundation and the compact of kajal. “Face.”

He sat at the dresser and opened the jar. The cream was cool. He smoothed it over cheeks, forehead, jaw, watching the tired male lines soften under the light layer. Kajal along the lower lids made his eyes look larger, darker. Lip colour last—something soft and pink that left his mouth feeling strangely full. When he leaned back, the stranger in the mirror looked almost ready.

His own hair still hung damp and loose past his collar. He reached for the comb.

“Braid it,” Chameli said.

He gathered the long black length, divided it into three strands, and tried to cross them the way he had practised earlier. The first attempt unravelled halfway down.

Chameli’s voice cut in, flat. “Clumsy fingers. Again.”

He kept at it, jaw tight, until a simple plait finally stayed. He tied the end with the thin elastic and let the finished braid fall over one shoulder. The weight of it was different now—feminine, deliberate.

A small, unexpected satisfaction settled in when the braid finally held.

Fully made up, he stood longer than he meant to, watching the girl in the mirror move whenever he shifted his weight.

Chameli’s reflection appeared behind his. “Walk.”

He took a step. Another step. She made a small, dismissive sound.

“Heels.”

He found the four-inch pair in the bag and slid his feet into them. The first attempt nearly sent him sideways. He caught the dresser edge, righted himself, and tried again. Hip, then step. Hip, then step. The braid swung against his back. The skirt lifted slightly with each careful stride, cool air touching skin that had never been this exposed in public.

“Again. From the door.”

He walked the short length of the room, turned, walked back. Chameli watched without moving closer.

In the mirror the figure that looked back was nothing like a policeman. The face was made-up, the eyes darker, the mouth soft. Somewhere under the quiet panic a second sensation had begun to surface—something slower, warmer, centred low in his belly.

Chameli pushed away from the wall at last. “Enough for now. Get ready in the evening, we will go out. Let me sleep for a while till then”

She left without another word.

Manav stood alone in the fluorescent light, braid heavy against his back. He quickly removed the working clothes and put the baby-doll nightie back on, leaving the push-up bra and tucked panties underneath.

He lifted one hand and let the soft cotton slide through his fingers. The pleasure of it was still unexpected. He did not take the nightie off when he finally climbed into the narrow bed. He lay there thinking about how quickly the clothes had begun to feel familiar. He only turned onto his side, the fabric settling around him, and listened to the distant traffic until it was evening.
