The moon was a pale silver coin, half hidden by drifting clouds. The paddy fields slept, hushed under the whisper of crickets. Velu stood barefoot on damp soil, holding a thin stick, guiding the cows back toward the shed.
The silence tonight was heavier than usual.
“Why is it so quiet…” he muttered, patting one cow’s neck.
“Even the wind sounds… like it’s holding its breath.”
From the border trees—where their village land met the scrublands of Pallavur—Velu thought he saw a flicker. A movement. Then stillness.
He stood still, brow furrowed.
“Might be a fox… or worse, those Pallavur dogs.”
He turned to urge the last cow forward when—
Crack.
Something hard hit the back of his head. A flash of white. Pain. Knees buckling. He stumbled but didn’t fall fully. He turned—blood running from his temple, eyes fierce—and swung wildly.
The attackers weren’t many. Just four.
Not thieves. Not silent. These men were not afraid—they wanted him to see them.
“You think your village can sleep safe behind tradition, huh?” one snarled.
“We take your cows tonight. Next time… your temple.”
Velu shouted—half in pain, half in defiance—and lunged. He tackled one to the ground, punching, biting, spitting blood. Another stabbed his thigh with a sickle, but he held on.
He fought like a cornered bull.
But four was too many.
They beat him till he stopped moving.
As he lay there, breathing in dirt, barely conscious, two cows were led away into the shadows. The attackers spat beside him, and left.
His ears rang. His body bled. But worst of all—his heart was crushed by one thought:
“I lost.”
Dawn
Kuyili watched from the doorway as villagers gathered at the border.
Velu walked slowly behind them, leaning on a stick. His face was bruised, eyes distant. Blood stained his veshti. He said nothing.
“Only two cows taken,” someone muttered. “Why didn’t he raise alarm?”
“Was he scared? Did he hide?”
His father stepped forward.
“My son fought. Look at his wounds. This is not cowardice—it’s sacrifice.”
But murmurs grew.
“Then why didn’t he tell anyone?”
“Why didn’t we hear the alarm bell?”
“Two cows. Two cows gone. That’s a hole in the village’s honor.”
Kuyili stepped out gently, face innocent.
“Appa… maybe anna was trying to fight. But maybe… he was scared too. What if they threatened him not to speak? Maybe he was too… ashamed?”
Her voice was light, unsure, measured. But the fire it lit in the crowd was immediate.
Velu looked up. His eyes met hers.
She didn’t look away
