Chapter 4 — The Salon Appointment
A neighbourhood salon · Two appointments, one shared adventure
Aarav had always gone to the barber alone, asking for a quick trim and leaving before anyone could start a conversation. Mira suggested something different: they would visit a salon together, and each could choose whichever services they wanted.
He agreed, provided she stayed nearby.
At the salon, the beautician asked what he wanted done. Aarav glanced at Mira before answering. “Just tidy my eyebrows a little. Nothing dramatic.”
Mira chose the same service. They sat side by side while the professionals shaped their brows. Aarav's expression moved from nervous concentration to surprise when he saw the subtle difference.
Next came a discussion about eyelashes, lip care, and ear piercing. Mira had her own preferences, and Aarav asked questions before deciding what he wanted. He chose a simple lip balm and a light lash-grooming service; for the piercing, he decided to wait until he felt completely ready.
“Good decision,” Mira told him. “You don't have to do everything in one day.”
Before leaving, Aarav asked the stylist how to care for his growing hair. The stylist recommended regular conditioning, gentle detangling, and only occasional trimming. Mira listened carefully too.
On the way home, Aarav admitted he had expected strangers to stare at him. Instead, the appointment had felt surprisingly ordinary.
“You were there,” he said quietly. “That helped.”
Mira realised that the most important part of the day wasn't the salon. It was that Aarav had started speaking for himself.
