Chapter 5 β€” A Secret No Longer Needed
Several months later Β· Mid-back hair and a choice of his own
By the end of the semester, Aarav's hair reached the middle of his back. He had learned to brush it patiently, use conditioner, and secure it in a bun with a rubber band or a loose braid when he studied.

Mira had become his trusted companion for the little things: detangling his hair, choosing a comfortable outfit, reminding him to moisturize, and keeping him company during grooming appointments.

For their final salon visit, Aarav chose a dusty-rose embroidered outfit. His hair was styled in soft waves, with two delicate clips holding back the front sections. He selected small earrings and a subtle lip tint himself.

Mira sat beside him in sage green, getting her own manicure and pedicure. They compared nail colours, laughed about their first disastrous attempts at doing their nails in the hostel, and took a photograph together.

On the journey home, Aarav finally addressed the secret that had started everything.

β€œYou know, I used to think you could make me do anything because you knew that about me.”

Mira's smile faded. β€œI was wrong to use it against you. I'm sorry.”

He looked at her for a long moment. β€œI was scared you would laugh at me. But now I know I can tell you no. And I can also say yes when I actually want to.”

Mira promised never to use his secret as leverage again. She deleted the old photograph she had taken without his permission, and they agreed that any new pictures would be shared only with mutual consent.

That evening, back in their two-person room, Aarav stood before the mirror and gathered his mid-back-length hair into a neat bun. He reached for his favourite pink daisy scrunchie.

Mira noticed and smiled. β€œStill wearing that?”

β€œOf course,” he replied. β€œIt's mine now.”

He looked at himself in the mirrorβ€”not as the shy boy who had been cornered by a secret, but as someone who had discovered new things about himself and could decide what they meant.

Two roommates sat on their beds, sharing snacks and laughing over their salon photographs. Their friendship had survived the awkward beginnings, but it had changed in an important way: it was no longer held together by blackmail. It was held together by trust.

Congratulations!
