Finding accommodation took longer than Arjun expected. He visited several inexpensive lodgings and eventually found a small shared room where working adults could rent a bed.
The room was plain, with a narrow window, an old cupboard, and just enough space for his belongings.
It was not glamorous, but it was his.
During the day, he searched for work. In the evenings, he sometimes visited Maya and Tara, who had become his closest contacts in Kolkata.
Their routines were different. Maya loved fashionable outfits and elaborate hairstyles. Tara preferred practical clothing and quiet evenings.
Arjun continued experimenting occasionally. One day he wore a simple kurta with loose trousers; another day he tied his hair into a high ponytail. For job interviews, he usually returned to a neat shirt and dark trousers.
The cousins sometimes disagreed with his choices.
"You looked more polished with the other hairstyle," Maya remarked one evening.
"Maybe," Arjun said. "But I need to decide what works for me."
He began cooking basic meals, managing his money, and learning the city's bus and metro routes.
The transformation he experienced was no longer just about hair or clothing. He was becoming more independent, one ordinary decision at a time.
