Arjun had begun asking questions that he could not answer simply by changing his hairstyle.
Did he enjoy feminine presentation because it was new? Did he feel comfortable using the name Riya? Was his interest only about clothing, or was there something deeper he wanted to understand?
He decided to speak with Dr. Meera, a counsellor recommended by someone he met while searching for work.
During their conversation, Dr. Meera listened without making assumptions.
"You don't have to choose a label immediately," she explained. "Clothing, gender expression, and gender identity are related for some people, but they are not the same thing."
Arjun spoke about the pressure he had experienced, his fear of losing support, and the moments when he had genuinely enjoyed experimenting.
Dr. Meera encouraged him to distinguish his own wishes from the expectations of his cousins.
She also explained that if he ever wanted to explore gender-affirming medical care, he could seek qualified professionals and make informed decisions without rushing.
Arjun left the appointment feeling calmer.
He still had questions, but he no longer believed that someone else had to answer them for him.
Whether he continued experimenting with feminine clothing, preferred masculine clothing, or eventually identified as transgender, the decision would belong to him.
