Chapter 1 — The Boy with Long Hair

The morning sun fell gently across the wide entrance of Sri Venkateswara Degree College. Students hurried through the gates carrying backpacks, notebooks, and dreams of a future they had not yet imagined.

Among them walked Hemanth, a twenty-year-old student with long, dark, wavy hair that fell over his shoulders. He wore an olive-green shirt, charcoal trousers, and a black backpack. He looked like an ordinary college student, yet there was something quietly different about the way he carried himself.

Hemanth preferred observing people before speaking to them. He enjoyed music, drawing, reading novels, and spending time alone beneath the trees behind the library. His long hair was particularly precious to him. He loved the feeling of it moving in the breeze and the way sunlight brought out its natural shine.

At home, his family often told him that boys should keep their hair short. His father considered long hair unsuitable for a young man, while his mother worried that other people might make fun of him. Hemanth usually responded with a quiet smile, hiding the hurt behind his silence.

College seemed like a chance to begin again.

During his first weeks, he experimented with different everyday styles: checked shirts with jeans, simple formal trousers, dark T-shirts, and watches that complemented his outfits. He wanted to look confident without pretending to be someone he was not.

The campus gradually became familiar. He learned which classroom had the best afternoon light, which canteen served the strongest tea, and which library corner remained peaceful even during examination season.

One afternoon, while searching for a classroom, he met Swetha, a junior student carrying a pile of books.

“Excuse me, do you know where the computer laboratory is?” she asked.

Hemanth pointed toward the staircase and explained the route. Swetha thanked him with a bright smile.

“You have really beautiful hair,” she said casually before hurrying away.

Hemanth stood still for a moment.

It was the first time in a long while that someone had complimented him without telling him to cut it.

He did not know that the girl with the cheerful smile would eventually become the person who understood him better than anyone else.

For now, he simply continued toward class, his hair moving gently behind him.

He believed college would teach him about examinations, careers, and independence.

He had yet to discover that it would also force him to confront the most personal question of his life:

Who was he allowed to become?
