Chapter 15 — Himaja, at Last

The evening began with an ordinary message from Swetha.

Come to the room when you are free. I have something to show you.

Himaja arrived wearing her sky-blue saree, her long hair arranged carefully with jasmine flowers. She expected to find Swetha preparing for another evening of studying together.

Instead, the room glowed with fairy lights.

Rose petals had been arranged across the bed, and photographs of their time together covered one side of the wall. There were pictures of their first conversations, quiet study sessions, hairstyles they had practiced, and the little moments that had gradually brought them closer.

Himaja stopped at the doorway.

“Swetha, what is all this?”

Swetha stood in the center of the room wearing a magenta saree. She looked nervous in a way Himaja had never seen before.

“I've been trying to find the right words for a long time,” Swetha began.

She spoke about their friendship: how she had first noticed Hemanth sitting alone beneath a tree, how she had worried about the pain he was experiencing, and how their conversations had slowly become the most important part of her days.

She remembered the evenings they had spent discussing identity, the times Himaja had cried, and the small victories that had helped her feel more confident.

“I started by wanting to help you feel less alone,” Swetha said. “But somewhere along the way, I realized that I had fallen in love with you.”

Himaja covered her mouth, tears gathering in her eyes.

Swetha took a small ring box from her pocket and knelt before her.

“I don't love you because of your clothes or your hair, and I don't expect you to become anyone other than yourself. I love your kindness, your courage, your quiet humor, and the way you keep trying even when life becomes difficult.”

Her voice trembled.

“Would you like to build a future with me? Not because you owe me anything, but because you want to?”

For a moment, Himaja could not speak.

She remembered the frightened student who had once cried alone after being humiliated by seniors. She remembered the fear of being misunderstood, the threats, and the nights when she had wondered whether anyone would ever accept her.

Then she looked at Swetha.

This was the person who had listened without demanding answers, who had helped without taking control, and who had stayed beside her even when there was nothing she could do to make the pain disappear.

Himaja reached for Swetha's hands.

“Yes,” she whispered.

Swetha looked up, hardly believing what she had heard.

Himaja laughed through her tears and repeated it.

“Yes, Swetha. I want to build that future with you.”

Swetha slipped the ring onto her finger, and they embraced beneath the fairy lights.

Later, they sat together beside the window, talking about the future. They knew that life would still bring challenges. They would have families to speak with, careers to build, and difficult conversations to navigate.

They did not pretend that love would solve everything.

Instead, they promised to keep listening to one another, to respect each other's choices, and to face uncertainty together.

Himaja rested her head on Swetha's shoulder.

“Do you think things will finally become easier?” she asked.

“Not every day,” Swetha replied. “But you won't have to face every difficult day alone.”

Outside, the campus lights shimmered against the evening sky.

Himaja thought of the long-haired student who had first walked through the college gates, hoping simply to belong. That student had endured humiliation, fear, and confusion, but had also discovered friendship, courage, and the freedom to explore a more authentic life.

The journey had not been about changing into someone worthy of love.

Himaja had been worthy of love all along.

Now, with Swetha's hand resting in hers, she understood that the happiest ending was not a perfect life without pain.

It was a life in which she could be herself, make her own choices, and share her future with someone who respected her.

For the first time, Himaja looked toward tomorrow without fear.

Her story had begun with a question.

It ended with a promise.

And the future was finally hers to choose.
