Chapter 1 — The Son Who Never Fit the Picture

Scene: The Ancestral Home — Early Morning

The old family house awakened to the sounds of a busy kitchen, clattering brass vessels, and Grandmother's familiar instructions.

Ten people lived beneath one roof. Grandfather Raghavayya was a retired farmer, while Grandmother Janakamma, affectionately called Athamma, managed the household with a strict hand. Their son Madhava and his wife Lakshmi had three daughters: Saroja, Padma, and Ananya.

Saroja was married to Ravi, a responsible man. Padma's husband, Prakash, helped manage the family's agricultural land. The youngest daughter, Ananya, had married Kethan through a love marriage.

Kethan was twenty-seven, innocent, soft-spoken, and employed as a software professional working from home. His shoulder-length black hair had always attracted attention, but he refused to cut it because he loved keeping it long.

One morning, Athamma found him sitting on the veranda.

"Kethan! Everyone is working, and you are sitting here like a guest!"

He immediately stood up.

"Sorry, Athamma. Tell me what I should do."

Ananya intervened. "Amma, he worked late last night. Let him have breakfast first."

Athamma muttered, "You chose him yourself. Now you defend him every day!"

Ananya felt hurt, but Kethan gently stopped her from arguing.

"Please don't fight because of me."

Later, Grandfather called Kethan beside him and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Son, a person becomes part of a family through love and responsibility, not through the circumstances of a marriage."

Kethan smiled gratefully.

He wanted to earn the family's respect. He did not yet know that his journey toward belonging would also lead him to discover a side of himself he had hidden for years.
