Chapter 41: The River and the Two Halves
The months that followed the great revelation were nothing short of a quiet revolution.
The Gounder family had changed, truly and deeply.
Mahendran Gounder, after recovering, became one of the strongest advocates for migrant worker rights in Tirupur. He publicly apologised in a large workers’ meeting for the years of exploitation and casual racism. The family built an entire housing society, clean, affordable row houses with proper sanitation, schools, and a community hall, exclusively for migrant families from Bihar, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh. They named it “Ekta Nagar.” Worker safety protocols were strictly enforced in all their mills. No more 12-hour shifts without breaks. Proper wages. Medical insurance. Respect.
My mother, once sharp-tongued and classist, now personally visited the colony every week, distributing clothes and speaking with the women. She had started learning basic Bhojpuri.
Priya and Karthik also transformed. They began volunteering in night schools for migrant children.
The change was real. Painful. Beautiful.
Nithya had found her own peace.
She married her new boyfriend ,a kind cardiologist from her hospital, in a simple yet joyful ceremony. I attended as Sunita, sitting quietly in the back row, watching her smile with genuine happiness. She deserved it. Our romantic chapter had ended the moment I chose to stay as Sunita. But our friendship remained, deeper, quieter, more understanding.
The real Sunita, now fully transitioned with Robby’s help into a man named Sundar had become a powerful voice. He worked as the official representative for migrant workers across several factories. He fought for rights, education, and dignity. He was bright, passionate, and respected. Ramesh and Sundar had become good friends, two men who had once shared the same woman in different ways, now bonded by respect and the love for little Pihu.
Everyone had found their place.
Except me.
The delivery day came exactly as the Swamy had foretold.
I was admitted into a private hospital under Nithya’s care. The advanced prosthetic belly had reached full term, 37 weeks. The weight was immense. My back hurt constantly. My breasts were tender and leaking simulated milk. My ankles were swollen. The permanent anklets felt tighter around my puffy feet.
The labour pains were programmed to feel completely real.
I lay in the hospital bed, sweating, crying, gripping the sheets as wave after wave of simulated contractions tore through me. Ramesh sat beside me, holding my hand. Pihu waited outside with Sundar. Nithya monitored everything.
I screamed. I pushed. I felt every humiliating, painful second of it.
And then… it was over.
Robby carefully removed the entire prosthetic system. The belly deflated. The weight disappeared. The realistic sensations faded.
I lay there exhausted, naked except for the mangalsutra still around my neck, tears streaming down my face.
The arc was complete.
But I was no longer fully Satyaraj.
Nor was I fully Sunita.
I existed somewhere in between, a soul that had lived both lives so deeply that separating them felt impossible.
Present Day
The sun was setting over the Cauvery.
I stood on the riverbank in male clothes for the first time in months, a simple white shirt and jeans, hair cut shorter, no bangles, no mangalsutra, no saree. The permanent anklets and toe rings had finally been cut off last week. My body felt lighter, but strangely empty.
I looked at the river, the same river that had witnessed my fall, my transformation, my suffering, and my growth.
As Satyaraj, I had changed.
I now understood the importance of education, something I had taken for granted my entire life. I was actively working in the family business, not as a spoiled son, but as a responsible young man. I woke up early. I listened to workers. I implemented the changes my family had started. I treated money with respect now, I knew how many hours of sweat went into every single rupee.
I had become the son my father had always hoped for.
The sun dipped lower, painting the Cauvery in burning orange and gold.
This was one half of my life.
The other half…
I touched the faint scar on my belly where the prosthetic had been attached for so long.
The other half still waited.
I was both.
Satyaraj and Sunita.
Rich and poor.
Man and woman.
Privileged and struggling.
I had lived both. I carried both.
And perhaps… that was the real ending.
I smiled softly as the sun finally disappeared behind the horizon.
The river kept flowing ,calm, eternal, carrying old lives and new beginnings.
I turned and began walking back.
There was still more to this story.
Much more.

Hi Jeru, loved the story. Please post "your name" also. Also consider my old suggestion of doing a fully forced fem story. Like with a villain and all. Haha. Let me know if we can connect somewhere in social media.
I'm really eager to read Your Name! I haven't had the chance to read it yet. please share it on Wattpad if it's available ther
Awwww soooo happy~~ to see someone excited for my imaginations 🥹 and sure I'll try to finish it up ASAP and publish em ✨
Great story, Jeru! Never saw that Part 33 twist coming. The whole story was a roller coaster from start to finish, and it was definitely worth the wait. Crazy writing, crazy imagination. Loved every bit of it.
Thank youu very much, means a lot to me 💫 I've been learning different ways of story telling, predominantly Monomyth and Freyteg's pyramid, I'll try to incorporate more of those with increased allegorical elements ( ꈍᴗꈍ)
If y'all remember, I had teased a story named "Your Name.", i deemed it be of a entirely different genre, might not be suitable for this community. Perhaps if y'all are interested, I'll publish it in Wattpad...
And again sorry for the delay in publication of the story. Contradictory to my initial small story idea, it ballooned to 42 Main chapters, which i had to write, proof check and upload in the website, damnnn it was exhausting
First of All, a huge heads up to @Meghana Akka for the updation of the website and actively improving it ✨
Thanks Jeru
