Chapter 13 - How the Look Came Together

Ritika behaved normally after seeing Ishan asleep in the pale green kurti.

She did not move her clothes away from the laundry basket. She did not ask why he looked nervous when she came home early. Most importantly, she never mentioned what she had seen.

Ishan watched her for two days before deciding that his secret remained safe.

Ritika allowed him to believe that.

She could not decide what the feminine clothes meant to him. She also did not want to frighten him into hiding from something he clearly enjoyed.

For now, she chose a smaller kind of support.

She would let him see that getting ready could be ordinary, enjoyable, and free from shame.

The opportunity came the following Saturday.

One of Ritika's colleagues was having an engagement function. At four in the afternoon, Ritika brought a standing mirror, her combs, a box of hairpins, and her makeup pouch to the dining table.

Ishan was drinking tea nearby.

"Why are you getting ready here?" he asked.

"The balcony light is better."

Ishan smiled.

"You made fun of me for saying that."

"You were photographing your crown from three inches away. I am using a mirror like a normal person."

She placed the mirror where the evening light reached her face.

Ritika could have prepared inside her bedroom. Instead, she left the door open and chose the shared table where Ishan could watch without being invited to watch.

She began with her hair.

Ishan had seen Ritika comb it hundreds of times. Usually she brushed it quickly, tied it back, and continued with her day.

Today she worked slowly.

First, she combed from the ends until the strands fell smoothly. Then she created a clean side part. She separated the smaller front section, twisted it backwards, and secured it above her ear with two bobby pins.

The larger section swept softly across her forehead.

Ritika gathered the rest of her hair low at the back. She twisted it into a neat bun and fixed it with several more pins. Instead of pulling everything tight, she loosened two fine strands near her cheeks.

Ishan watched the shape change with every step.

The side part made one side of her face look softer. The pinned section opened the other side and left space for an earring. The low bun made her neck and jaw more visible, while the two loose strands stopped the style from looking severe.

It was not only a way to control hair.

The hairstyle was changing how her whole face appeared.

"How do you make the bun stay with those small pins?" he asked.

"The pins cross inside. One holds the other."

Ritika turned slightly so he could see the back in the mirror.

The pins themselves were almost invisible.

Ishan thought about his own attempts with the tic-tac clips. He had been deciding where to place the hair. Ritika was also deciding what parts of her face the hairstyle would reveal.

That difference stayed with him.

She opened the makeup pouch next.

Ritika used a compact first, softening the small changes in colour across her face. A thin line of kajal made her eyes look darker and clearer. She added a little colour above her eyelids, then checked both sides in the mirror until they matched.

Ishan noticed that no single step changed her completely.

Each one added something small.

The kajal brought attention to her eyes. The soft colour above them made the look warmer. When she applied a deep rose lipstick, her mouth no longer disappeared beside the darker eye makeup.

She finished with a small maroon bindi.

The bindi was the smallest part, but it drew the hairstyle, eyes, and lipstick together.

Ishan had never understood how much balance went into a finished face. Makeup had always seemed like colour added in separate places.

Watching Ritika showed him that each detail answered another.

"That takes a lot of time," he said.

"Only because I have time today."

"Do you need all of it for an engagement?"

Ritika looked at him through the mirror.

"Need? No."

She closed the lipstick.

"I enjoy getting ready when I am not rushing."

That answer interested Ishan more than the makeup itself.

The preparation was not a task she tolerated to satisfy other people. She enjoyed watching the look develop beneath her own hands.

Ritika carried the mirror back to her room and changed.

When she returned, she wore a deep teal kurti covered with fine gold embroidery around the neckline, sleeves, and lower border. Matching straight trousers continued the clean shape, and a light gold-edged dupatta rested over one shoulder.

The clothes changed the meaning of everything Ishan had already observed.

The low bun exposed the embroidered neckline instead of hiding it beneath loose hair. The deep rose lipstick matched the warmth of the gold thread. Her small bindi sat naturally between the darker eyes and the detailed fabric.

None of the parts appeared separate now.

Ritika opened a long box of bangles.

It held slim teal and gold bangles arranged in an alternating pattern.

She brought the fingers of one hand together and slid the first set over them. Then she added more until eight bangles rested on the wrist.

She repeated the same arrangement on the other side.

The fuller sets covered enough space to look intentional beside the embroidered sleeves. They made a clear, musical sound when she lowered her hands.

Ishan looked at both wrists.

"That is a lot of bangles."

"For daily use, yes. With this kurti, two or three would look lost."

She moved one gold bangle between two teal ones until both wrists matched.

Ishan understood what she meant.

The embroidered outfit needed more than one quiet bangle. The larger set carried the same colour and detail into her movements.

Ritika added small gold jhumkas. They hung clearly beneath the pinned sides of her hair and moved whenever she turned her head.

The hairstyle had made room for them before she even wore them.

That connection fascinated Ishan.

The hair, makeup, earrings, clothes, dupatta, and bangles were not independent decorations. Each choice created space for the next one.

Ritika sprayed perfume once near her neck and once over the edge of her dupatta.

The familiar scent reached him.

It was the same perfume that remained faintly on the kurtis in the laundry basket.

Until that moment, Ishan had thought of perfume as something separate from appearance because it could not be seen. Now the fragrance seemed to complete the presentation. It remained near her even after the bangles became still.

Ritika checked herself once in the hall mirror.

She adjusted the dupatta, moved one bangle, and smiled at the result.

She was still the same Ritika who had reminded him about groceries that morning.

Yet every small decision had brought forward a softer, brighter, and more openly feminine version of her.

More than her appearance, Ishan noticed how comfortable she was with the process. She had not needed permission to enjoy the colours, sounds, hairstyle, or perfume. She had looked into the mirror without fear of being caught.

Ishan envied that freedom.

"You look very different," he said.

Ritika turned towards him.

"Bad different?"

"No. Complete."

The word came before he had time to examine it.

Ritika looked at herself once more.

"That means everything worked together."

Her cab notification appeared.

She placed the lipstick and perfume beside the makeup pouch, closed the bangle box, and left for the function.

The flat became quiet.

Ishan remained near the dining table.

He thought about the kurtis he wore in secret. He had always focused on whether they fitted, how they fell over the leggings, and which hairstyle looked best.

Now he understood why the private image still felt unfinished.

It was not because he needed to add every item Ritika had worn.

It was because he had never thought of the look as a whole.

Hair could frame a face instead of simply staying out of the eyes. Colour could make one feature answer another. Bangles could carry an outfit into movement. Perfume could remain after everything else became still.

The finished appearance mattered.

But for the first time, Ishan also understood that creating it could be part of the pleasure.

On the open shelf near Ritika's mirror, the rose lipstick, perfume bottle, bangles, combs, and spare clips remained within reach.

Ishan did not touch them.

He only stood before the shelf and imagined what choices he would make if the reflection belonged to him.
