Chapter 14 - When the Reflection Was His

Ishan remained before the open shelf after Ritika left for the engagement.

The rose lipstick stood beside the perfume bottle. An open tray held spare hair clips, bobby pins, and several sets of glass bangles.

He could still picture the way Ritika's appearance had developed one step at a time.

The difference was that she had been free to enjoy every step.

Ishan looked towards the front door.

Ritika had said the function would continue until late evening. Her cab had already left the building, and she normally messaged before returning.

He had several hours.

That thought felt less like reassurance and more like permission.

Ishan walked away from the shelf.

He washed his teacup, checked his phone, and opened a video without watching it. After ten minutes, he returned to Ritika's room.

"I already know what I am going to do," he told himself.

Saying it aloud removed the final excuse.

He chose a soft plum kurti from the clothes waiting to be washed and carried it to his bedroom. Then he wore it with the black cotton leggings.

The kurti fell loosely across his slimmer waist and followed the softer shape of his chest and hips without pulling. The dark plum colour looked warmer against his clean-shaven face than the pale green and blue kurtis had.

This time, he did not stop after checking the fit.

He carried his comb and the box of bobby pins to the mirror.

Ishan created a side part as Ritika had done. He separated the smaller front section, twisted it backwards, and tried to secure it above his ear.

The first pin slid out.

He remembered Ritika's explanation.

One holds the other.

Ishan inserted the first bobby pin again. Then he crossed a second pin over it.

The twisted section remained in place.

He turned his head and looked at the result.

One side of his face was open while the larger section swept across his forehead and curved near his other cheek. The rest of his shoulder-length hair remained loose.

He briefly tried gathering it at the back, but the shorter front layers slipped free. Instead of forcing the formal bun Ritika had worn, he released everything except the pinned side.

The simpler style suited his current length.

More importantly, he had created it himself.

Ishan returned to the open shelf.

He left the kajal pencil inside the pouch. Applying anything close to his eyes felt too difficult for a first attempt.

The lipstick frightened him more than the kurti had.

Clothes could be removed quickly. Hair could be combed loose. Colour on his face felt like a clearer admission.

He picked up the rose lipstick anyway.

Ishan stood close to the mirror and turned the lipstick only a little. He remembered Ritika moving it slowly instead of pressing.

His first line went too far beyond one corner.

He wiped that edge with a tissue and tried again with less pressure.

The colour spread unevenly across his lower lip. He pressed his lips together, checked the shape, and added a small amount where the rose shade looked lighter.

It was not as clean as Ritika's application.

It was still enough to change his face.

Without colour, his smooth cheeks and softly narrowed jaw had made him look younger. The lipstick drew attention towards his mouth and made the clean-shaven softness around it feel deliberate.

Beside the side-parted hair, the effect was unmistakably feminine.

Ishan moved back from the mirror.

The change did not make him look like Ritika. It did not hide every masculine part of his face.

It made the reflection look like him after choosing femininity on purpose.

That mattered more.

He opened the bangle tray.

There were several plain sets for everyday kurtis. Ishan selected a group of thin maroon and gold bangles that matched the plum cloth.

He brought the fingers of his right hand together as he had watched Ritika do. The first bangle caught near his thumb, and he stopped rather than forcing it.

From the larger set, he chose one with a little more space.

That bangle passed carefully over his hand.

One by one, he added six bangles to the wrist. Then he repeated the same pattern on the other side.

The twelve bangles made a clear sound when he lowered his hands.

Ishan smiled immediately.

He had noticed the sound during Ritika's lunch, but hearing it follow his own movement was different. When he adjusted the hem of the kurti, the bangles answered. When he moved his hair from one shoulder, they sounded again.

They carried the feminine look beyond the mirror.

The perfume came last.

Ishan sprayed it once near the neckline of the kurti.

The familiar fragrance rose around him.

For weeks, he had found traces of it in Ritika's clothes. Now the scent was fresh, joined with the lipstick, bangles, styled hair, kurti, and leggings.

The look finally felt complete.

Ishan stood before the mirror without moving.

His hair swept softly across one side of his forehead. The crossed bobby pins opened the other side of his face. Rose lipstick warmed his mouth. The plum kurti followed the shape his old T-shirts had hidden, while the maroon and gold bangles added colour and movement at both wrists.

No single detail had created the reflection.

They worked together.

He understood exactly what he had observed in Ritika.

For the first time, the complete reflection belonged to him.

Ishan expected fear to end the moment.

Instead, he smiled.

He left the bedroom and walked into the hall. The bangles sounded more clearly away from the soft furnishings. He made tea and carried it to the dining table, moving carefully until he understood how the glass circles shifted along his wrists.

At first, he kept looking towards the mirror.

Later, he stopped.

He sat with the kurti resting naturally over the leggings, his perfume remaining faintly around him, and the bangles sounding whenever he lifted the cup.

Nothing about the evening felt like a joke or costume.

It felt peaceful.

That realization created the first real discomfort.

If the clothes had looked wrong, he could have returned them and ended the experiment. If the lipstick had embarrassed him, he could have wiped it away and laughed at himself.

But Ishan did not want to remove any of it.

He only wanted to stop hiding.

The wish appeared so clearly that he put down his cup.

Stopping the secrecy meant telling someone. The first person would have to be Ritika.

Ishan imagined her standing across the table while he explained the kurtis, the hair experiments, the lipstick, and the bangles.

His confidence disappeared.

She might understand. She might even help.

But once he spoke, he could never return to being the brother whose leggings were only comfortable and whose clips were only practical.

At nine-fifteen, Ritika sent a message.

**Function finished. Leaving in fifteen minutes.**

Ishan stared at the screen.

Then he began removing everything.

He placed the bangles back in their tray, trying to remember their earlier order. He pulled out the crossed bobby pins and combed his hair loose.

The lipstick required more effort. He wiped it with tissue, washed his face, and checked both corners beneath the bathroom light. A faint rose line remained until he washed again.

He returned the lipstick and perfume to the open shelf.

The plum kurti went back beneath the other clothes in the laundry basket. Ishan wore his oversized grey T-shirt over the black leggings and opened the balcony door to clear the perfume from the room.

When Ritika arrived, he was sitting at the dining table with loose hair and an untouched glass of water.

"You are still awake?" she asked.

"Not sleepy."

Ritika removed her sandals.

The teal and gold bangles still covered both her wrists, and the formal hairstyle remained in place. Ishan looked at them for only a second before looking away.

"How was the function?" he asked.

"Good. Too much food."

She studied him briefly.

"Everything okay?"

"Yes. Just tired."

Ritika did not question him further.

Later, while removing her makeup, she noticed that the rose lipstick had been returned at a slightly different angle. The top was no longer smooth. In the bangle tray, one maroon bangle rested between two gold ones instead of beside them.

A crossed pair of bobby pins lay near the mirror.

Ritika understood that the kurti had not been the end of his curiosity.

She returned the bobby pins to the box and left the shelf open.

In his bedroom, Ishan lay awake.

The lipstick was gone. The bangles were silent. His hair had returned to its usual loose shape.

The reflection still remained in his mind.

He was no longer trying to decide whether he liked feminine presentation.

He was trying to decide how long he could continue hiding that he did.
