The new dynamic settled in. Nalini managing Rohan relieved Priya of her anxieties, and surprisingly, it relieved Rohan too. Nalini's inspections, while thorough, were never cruel. When he made a mistake, he wasn't punished with humiliating tasks; he was simply told to redo it.

Priya, having more free time and less stress, started suggesting outings for her mother. "Ma, you should go to the temple in the evening. Or perhaps I can take you to that new salon I invest in? You can get a massage."

"That sounds lovely, Priya," Nalini agreed. "But who will prepare dinner?"

"Rohan will, of course," Priya stated. "He knows the schedule."

One evening, Priya and Nalini returned from the salon. The house smelled wonderful, a rich aroma of spices filling the air. Rohan, dressed in a beautiful emerald green saree, was setting the table.

"Dinner is ready, Mistress, Ma," he announced, bowing.

They sat down to eat. Priya took a bite of the paneer dish and paused. "This is really good, Rohan."

Rohan looked up, surprised by the rare, unprompted praise from his wife. "Thank you, Mistress."

Nalini seized the moment. "It is delicious. He has really perfected the recipe. It takes a lot of skill to balance these spices."

Priya looked at her mother, then at Rohan. For a moment, Nalini saw the old Priya, the one who didn't view every interaction as a battle for control.

"Yes, he does cook well," Priya conceded softly.

Later that night, when Rohan came to press Nalini's legs, she didn't resist. She let him perform the task, noting how his touch was less nervous, more rhythmic.

"Priya seemed more relaxed tonight," Nalini observed quietly.

"Yes, Ma," Rohan agreed, his eyes focused on his task. "She is less angry these days."

"And you, Rohan? Are you less afraid?"

He paused, his hands stilling on her calves. He looked up, his heavily made-up eyes meeting hers in the dim light. "I am always careful, Ma. But... yes. It is easier when she is not angry."

"She doesn't need to be angry to be in control," Nalini said gently. "And you don't need to be terrified to serve."

The next few months saw a subtle, gradual shift. Nalini continued her role as the manager, slowly introducing the idea that a well-run house was a result of cooperation, not just dictation.

She encouraged Priya to communicate her needs rather than issue commands. Instead of "Get me water," it became "Rohan, could you please bring me some water?" The difference was minute, but profound. Rohan's immediate compliance remained, but the frantic, panicked edge began to dull.

One Sunday, during the deep cleaning routine, Nalini walked into the kitchen. Rohan was struggling to reach the top shelves to clean them. He was on his tiptoes in his heels, stretching precariously.

Priya walked in a moment later to get a snack. She saw him struggling. Nalini held her breath, waiting for Priya to reprimand him for his clumsiness.

Instead, Priya sighed. "Rohan, get down before you break an ankle."

Rohan immediately stepped down, looking apologetic. "I am sorry, Mistress. I will get a stool."

"Don't bother," Priya said. She reached up effortlessly and wiped the top shelf with a cloth. "There. Now clean the rest."

Rohan stood frozen. Priya had just helped him with a chore. It broke rule number one.

"Thank you, Priya," Nalini said smoothly, acting as if nothing monumental had happened. "Rohan, continue with the lower cabinets."

"Yes, Ma," he breathed, still looking stunned.

Priya washed her hands and left the kitchen, looking slightly flushed. She had crossed a line in her own strict rulebook, and the sky hadn't fallen. Rohan hadn't suddenly turned into a domineering patriarch. He had simply been grateful.
