Part 48

That night, after returning from her dance teacher's house, Archana did not say much.
She finished the remaining household work, checked the kitchen once more, arranged the vegetables for the next morning, and finally went to her usual place.
The mattress was still spread in the corner of the room.
She lay down at the very edge of it, pulling the thin blanket over herself.
For the first few minutes, she simply stared into the darkness.
Then she noticed her father standing nearby.
Suresh had stopped.
He didn't say anything.
He simply looked at her.
Archana looked back.
Neither spoke.
After everything that had happened, she had learned to read the silence in his face.
He was hurt.
Not angry.
Not disappointed in the way she had feared.
Just deeply worried.
Archana wanted to say something.
She wanted to tell him that she was all right.
That she wasn't angry anymore.
That she understood why he had done what he had done.
But no words came.
So she simply looked at him.
Suresh remained there for a long moment before quietly walking away.
Archana watched him disappear into the darkness.
She knew he was hurting.
She also knew she could not fix it in one night.
Eventually, she closed her eyes.
And for the first time in a long while, she slept peacefully.
Sunday
Archana woke naturally at around five in the morning.
There was no alarm.
No nightmare.
No sudden fear.
Just the quiet of a Sunday morning.
She got up, washed her face and went straight into the kitchen.
By seven, breakfast was ready.
Poori.
Masala.
She arranged everything on the dining table and called her parents and Kavitha.
Everyone sat down.
Archana ate quickly and then immediately began thinking about lunch.
She turned toward her father.
“Appa, what should I prepare for lunch?”
Suresh looked at her.
“Nothing, kanna.”
Archana stopped.
“I'll order today.”
She blinked.
“Order?”
“Yes.”
He turned toward Lakshmi.
“I'm going to meet my friends. I'll come back in the afternoon with lunch.”
Then he looked at Archana.
“What should I buy?”
Archana looked confused.
She wasn't used to being asked.
Her eyes moved toward her mother.
Lakshmi smiled.
“What do you want?”
Archana thought for a moment.
“Biryani?”
Suresh smiled.
“Done.”
He got up and left.
Archana watched him go.
Then she turned toward her mother.
“What happened to Appa?”
Lakshmi laughed.
“What happened?”
“He doesn't usually buy food outside.”
Lakshmi shook her head.
“That is how it is.”
Archana waited.
“Many husbands will happily let their wives do everything.”
She glanced at Archana.
“But if that same workload starts affecting their daughter…”
She smiled.
“…suddenly they discover restaurants.”
Archana understood the tease.
“Maaa!”
Lakshmi laughed.
“What?”
“You're teasing Appa.”
“Of course.”
Archana smiled despite herself.
Then she looked around.
“So what should I do now?”
Lakshmi pointed toward the floor in front of her.
“Come and sit here.”
Archana obeyed.
Lakshmi brought a small bottle of hair oil.
The moment Archana saw it, her expression softened.
“Amma…”
“Sit quietly.”
Lakshmi applied oil to her scalp and began gently massaging her hair.
Archana closed her eyes.
She hadn't realized how much she had missed this.
Her mother's fingers moved slowly through her hair, separating the strands and working the oil into her scalp.
Archana smiled.
Lakshmi immediately noticed.
“Why are you smiling?”
“Nothing.”
“Your hair is a mess.”
Archana opened her eyes.
“Is it?”
“Yes.”
Lakshmi gathered a section.
“It looks dry and weak. Is this how you take care of your hair?”
Archana looked embarrassed.
“What should I do? My mother never taught me.”
Lakshmi gave her a playful slap on the shoulder.
“After I do it, I'll teach you.”
Archana laughed.
“Yes, mummy.”
Lakshmi began carefully brushing through the knots.
After a few moments, Archana quietly said,
“Amma?”
“Hmm?”
“I slept peacefully yesterday.”
Lakshmi's hand slowed.
“Good.”
“Was Appa angry?”
“No.”
“Then why did he look like that?”
Lakshmi sighed.
“He is worried.”
“About what?”
“Your future.”
Archana looked down.
“He keeps saying we destroyed your future.”
There was a pause.
“And…”
Lakshmi's voice softened.
“He says that maybe he is right.”
Archana turned toward her.
“No, Amma.”
Lakshmi looked at her.
“How do you know what my future will be?”
Archana smiled faintly.
“Did you ever imagine that one Sunday morning you would be sitting here oiling my hair?”
Lakshmi laughed.
“No.”
“Exactly.”
Archana leaned back.
“So don't decide my future before it happens.”
Lakshmi smiled.
“Now you're talking like Radha.”
Archana immediately shook her head.
“No, Ma.”
“Then?”
“I am Brihannala.”
Lakshmi stopped brushing.
“What?”
Archana smiled.
“I am Arjun, right?”
Lakshmi stared at her for a second.
Then she burst out laughing.
“So now you're Brihannala?”
“Yes.”
“Then after one year you'll become Arjun again?”
Archana shrugged.
“I don't know, Ma.”
The laughter disappeared from Lakshmi's face.
That was the question neither of them could answer.
“What will happen to you?”
Archana looked at the floor.
“I'll stay with you.”
Lakshmi continued brushing.
“And after us?”
“I'll stay with Kavitha.”
“In her house?”
“Yes.”
“As what?”
Archana thought for a moment.
“Anywhere.”
Lakshmi raised an eyebrow.
“As a maid?”
Archana nodded.
“Or nanny.”
Lakshmi couldn't help laughing.
“What if she doesn't want you?”
Archana was silent for several seconds.
Then she smiled.
“Don't worry, Ma.”
“I'll survive somehow.”
Lakshmi gave her another playful slap.
This one was slightly harder.
“Why do you always think like that?”
Archana turned around.
“Why did you hit me?”
Lakshmi shook her head.
“You're talking as though your only options are becoming someone's servant or starving.”
Archana looked directly into her mother's eyes.
“Amma…”
Her voice became serious.
“If there is no option, I'll beg.”
Lakshmi's face changed.
“Or I'll starve.”
“Don't say that.”
“But I won't do prostitution.”
Lakshmi stared at her.
“Don't worry about that.”
Archana continued before her mother could respond.
“I wasn't talking about that.”
“Then?”
Archana hesitated.
“I could become a priest.”
Lakshmi blinked.
“A priest?”
“Yes.”
“And earn money by helping people.”
She paused.
“Some traditional practices… helping people who believe they have bad omens or problems.”
Lakshmi remembered something.
“Revathi?”
Archana nodded.
“Do you remember Revathi Akka?”
“Yes.”
“She taught me some of those things.”
Lakshmi looked curious.
“Why would she teach you?”
Archana shrugged.
“She said that if nobody else is there for you, having some knowledge that people value might help you survive.”
She paused.
“She blessed me too.”
Lakshmi looked at her daughter carefully.
“And you believe it works?”
Archana thought about it.
“I don't know.”
She was honest.
“But somehow, sometimes I know things I don't know how I know.”
Lakshmi looked intrigued.
“Show me.”
Archana immediately became uncomfortable.
“Not you.”
“Why?”
“Call Kavitha.”
Lakshmi called toward the other room.
“Kavitha!”
“What, Amma?”
“Come here.”
Kavitha walked in.
“What happened?”
Archana looked at her.
Then at Lakshmi.
“I'll try.”
Kavitha sat in front of her.
Archana hesitated before placing her hand gently on Kavitha's head.
She closed her eyes.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
She concentrated.
Whatever she thought she was sensing, she clearly did not want to say it.
Lakshmi waited.
Finally she said,
“Tell me.”
Archana opened her eyes.
“Amma…”
“What?”
“I don't want Kavitha to get into trouble.”
Kavitha frowned.
“What trouble?”
“Promise me you won't punish her.”
Lakshmi nodded.
“I promise.”
Archana looked at Kavitha.
“I'm sorry.”
“For what?”
Archana took a breath.
“You got twenty-four marks in your chemistry model test.”
Kavitha's mouth fell open.
Lakshmi turned immediately.
“Is that true?”
Kavitha looked horrified.
“Amma…”
“And…”
Archana continued nervously.
“You are saving money to buy a push-up bra from your Meesho cart.”
Kavitha's face turned bright red.
“Adipaavi!”
Lakshmi stared at her.
“Is that also true?”
Kavitha covered her face.
“…Yes.”
Lakshmi looked back at Archana.
For several seconds she said nothing.
Then her eyes filled with tears.
She reached forward and pulled Archana into her arms.
Archana froze.
“Amma?”
Lakshmi held her tightly.
She cried silently against her daughter's shoulder.
Archana gently stroked her mother's back.
“It's okay, Ma.”
“Don't worry about me.”
Lakshmi wiped her eyes.
Kavitha was still staring at Archana.
“How did you know?”
Archana shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“You really don't?”
“No.”
Kavitha moved closer.
“Sorry, akka.”
Archana smiled.
“It's okay.”
Kavitha hesitated.
“Whatever anger you have…”
Archana looked at her.
“You can slap me if you want.”
“What?”
“But please don't call me Chinna Amma anymore.”
Archana smiled.
“Not even in front of your friends.”
Kavitha looked serious.
“If they don't understand who you are, then they don't deserve to be my friends.”
Archana's expression softened.
“Thank you.”
Kavitha smiled.
“Anna.”
The single word hit Archana harder than she expected.
She looked away quickly.
A little later, the front door opened.
Suresh had returned.
The smell reached the kitchen before he did.
Biryani.
Chicken 65.
Ice cream.
He had brought enough for everyone.
They gathered around the dining table.
Archana served herself a portion.
She looked at the biryani for a moment.
Then she took her first bite.
She stopped.
Everyone noticed.
She took another.
Then another.
She ate slowly at first.
Then with genuine enthusiasm.
Not because it was expensive.
Not because it was from a famous restaurant.
But because something about that meal felt different.
She was eating it without calculating.
Without worrying about whether she had earned it.
Without thinking about whether she was allowed to enjoy it.
She simply ate.
Suresh watched her.
Lakshmi watched her.
Kavitha watched her.
None of them said anything.
Archana didn't care.
For once, she didn't want to think about tomorrow.
She didn't want to think about college.
The committee.
The punishment.
The future.
She just wanted to enjoy the biryani.
And after lunch, the family slowly settled down for the afternoon.
For one Sunday afternoon, there was no argument.
No accusation.
No fear.
Just the quiet comfort of a family sharing a meal together.
