Part 50

The sun slowly moved toward the western horizon.
The harsh afternoon heat had softened.
A golden light spread across the terrace walls, and the breeze became cooler.
The three of them were still there.
Suresh, Lakshmi and Kavitha.
They had started by talking about Archana.
Then somehow the conversation had moved to everything else.
Old memories.
Family stories.
Kavitha's school.
Suresh's business.
Lakshmi's complaints about both of them.
Even small things that had happened years ago.
At one point, Kavitha suddenly laughed.
“It has been so long since we all sat and talked like this.”
Suresh looked at her.
“Has it?”
“Yes.”
Lakshmi smiled.
“She is right.”
Kavitha leaned back against the wall.
“We should go somewhere.”
“Where?” Suresh asked.
“Anywhere.”
She looked at both her parents.
“All four of us.”
Lakshmi smiled.
“First finish your exams.”
Kavitha groaned.
“Amma…”
“You scored twenty-four in your chemistry model test and hid it from us.”
“I'll study properly.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Suresh laughed.
“Then we'll think about a trip.”
Kavitha smiled.
“Deal.”
For a few minutes, they continued talking.
Then they heard something from downstairs.
A song.
Faint at first.
Then clearer as the breeze carried it upward.
All three stopped.
Kavitha looked over the terrace wall.
“What's that?”
They walked toward the edge.
Below them, in the front porch, Archana was sweeping.
She had apparently woken up some time earlier.
Nobody had noticed.
She hadn't come looking for them.
She hadn't called anyone.
She had simply woken, freshened up and started her routine.
The broom moved steadily across the porch.
Then, once the floor was clean, she put the broom aside.
She brought out the small container of rice flour.
And began drawing a kolam.
As she worked, she softly sang along with the song playing from her phone.
The familiar melody floated through the evening air.
There was no audience.
No performance.
No embarrassment.
She simply sang.
Suresh watched silently.
Lakshmi smiled.
Kavitha rested her chin on the terrace wall.
“She looks happy.”
Lakshmi nodded.
“She does.”
Archana finished the kolam, stood up and looked at it for a moment.
Then she gathered the things and went inside.
A few minutes later, she appeared on the staircase.
She was carrying herself as she always did when she was working—focused, purposeful, thinking about the next task.
She climbed toward the terrace without looking around.
She wasn't coming to find them.
She was coming to collect the clothes that had been left to dry.
Halfway across the terrace, she finally noticed them.
All three were sitting together.
Archana stopped.
Her eyes widened slightly.
“You're all here?”
Kavitha laughed.
“We've been here for hours.”
Archana looked around.
“I thought you were sleeping.”
Lakshmi smiled.
“No.”
“Oh.”
Archana picked up the dried clothes.
Then she looked at them again.
“Wait.”
“What?” Suresh asked.
“I'll make coffee.”
Kavitha immediately smiled.
“And snacks?”
Archana laughed.
“I knew you'd ask.”
“What are you making?”
“I'll see.”
She turned toward the stairs.
“Give me thirty minutes.”
“Archana,” Lakshmi called.
She turned.
“Hmm?”
“Don't rush.”
Archana smiled.
“Okay, Amma.”
She disappeared downstairs.
The three of them looked at one another.
Suresh shook his head.
“She never stops.”
Lakshmi smiled.
“She'll stop when we tell her to.”
Kavitha looked at her mother.
“Will she?”
Lakshmi didn't answer.
About thirty minutes later, footsteps came up the stairs.
Archana appeared carrying a tray.
Four cups of tea.
A plate of hot onion pakodas.
She placed everything in the middle.
“I made enough for everyone.”
Kavitha immediately reached for one.
“Hot!”
“Obviously.”
Suresh laughed.
“Did you make these?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Archana sat down.
For a moment, nobody said anything.
Then Kavitha started talking.
About her school.
About a teacher she disliked.
About a friend who had done something ridiculous.
Suresh joined in.
Lakshmi teased him about something from years ago.
Kavitha laughed.
Archana laughed too.
Soon the terrace was filled with ordinary conversation.
Nothing important.
Nothing dramatic.
Just family talk.
Teasing.
Arguments over who got the last pakoda.
Suresh pretending to complain.
Lakshmi telling him not to eat too many.
Kavitha stealing one from his plate anyway.
Archana laughing at all of them.
And slowly, almost without anyone noticing, something changed.
For years, this family had existed together without really being together.
Lakshmi had been busy raising the children and managing the household.
Suresh had been consumed by business.
Arjun had spent most of his free time outside with his friends.
Kavitha had grown from a little girl into a teenager while everyone was busy with their own lives.
They had shared a house.
Shared meals.
Shared responsibilities.
But they hadn't shared enough moments like this.
No punishment.
No lectures.
No arguments.
No expectations.
Just sitting together.
Kavitha looked around at them.
Her voice became quieter.
“You know what?”
Everyone looked at her.
“This feels different.”
Suresh smiled.
“What?”
She looked at her parents.
“Now it actually feels like we're a family.”
Nobody immediately answered.
Lakshmi looked at Suresh.
Suresh looked at Kavitha.
Then both looked toward Archana.
Archana was holding her tea, listening quietly.
She smiled.
“Maybe we should do this more often.”
Kavitha nodded.
“Yes.”
“Even after exams,” Suresh said.
“Especially after exams,” Kavitha replied.
Lakshmi laughed.
“First pass chemistry.”
Kavitha groaned.
“Amma!”
Everyone laughed.
And as the last light of the evening faded from the terrace, the four of them remained there together.
For once, they weren't thinking about what their family had lost.
They were simply enjoying what they had found again.
Each other.
