Part 49

It was unusual.
That was the first thing Lakshmi noticed.
After lunch, Archana had gone to her usual corner of the living room.
The mattress was still there.
She had pulled the blanket over herself, turned slightly toward the wall, and closed her eyes.
Normally, even when she was exhausted, she would sleep lightly.
A sound from the kitchen would wake her.
Someone opening the front door would make her sit up.
If she thought she had slept longer than she was supposed to, she would immediately get up in panic.
But that afternoon…
She simply slept.
Deeply.
Peacefully.
Suresh stood a little distance away, watching her.
After several minutes, he quietly turned toward Lakshmi.
“Lakshmi…”
She immediately raised one finger to her lips.
“Not here.”
Suresh stopped.
Lakshmi nodded toward the balcony.
“Come.”
She walked outside.
Suresh followed.
A few seconds later, Kavitha quietly followed them.
They climbed the stairs to the terrace.
The afternoon sun was still strong, but a gentle breeze moved across the open terrace.
Suresh looked at Lakshmi.
“For two days…”
“What?”
“She has been sleeping peacefully.”
Lakshmi nodded.
“I noticed.”
“I was going to say something downstairs.”
“Don't.”
Suresh frowned.
“Why did you bring me here?”
Lakshmi looked toward the stairway.
“Because whatever we say, we shouldn't say it there.”
Suresh understood immediately.
“She might hear us.”
“Yes.”
He sighed.
“We've discussed things in front of her many times.”
“I know.”
“But this feels different.”
Lakshmi looked at him.
“It is.”
Suresh leaned against the terrace wall.
“I don't understand what is happening to her.”
Lakshmi remained silent for a moment.
“She is changing.”
“Changing how?”
“Not just the way she dresses. Not just the way she behaves.”
She looked down.
“Something inside her is changing.”
Kavitha stood a little behind them, listening.
Lakshmi continued.
“Today she did something strange.”
“What?”
“She put her hand on Kavitha's head.”
Suresh raised an eyebrow.
“Why?”
“I don't know exactly. She said Revathi had taught her some traditional practices.”
Suresh remained quiet.
“She closed her eyes for a few minutes,” Lakshmi continued, “and then she told me what Kavitha had been hiding.”
Kavitha immediately looked embarrassed.
Suresh glanced at her.
“What did she tell you?”
Kavitha covered her face.
“Appa…”
Lakshmi smiled faintly.
“She told us about the chemistry test.”
Suresh laughed.
“How much?”
Kavitha muttered,
“Twenty-four.”
Suresh stared at her.
“Twenty-four?”
“Appa!”
Lakshmi laughed.
“And she somehow knew about the money Kavitha was saving for something she wanted to buy.”
Suresh looked at his daughter.
Kavitha refused to make eye contact.
“But that isn't what disturbed me,” Lakshmi said.
Suresh became serious again.
“What did?”
“She didn't seem interested in what we thought about her future.”
He waited.
“I told her we were worried that we had destroyed her future.”
Suresh looked down.
“And she simply said, ‘No, Amma. How do you know what my future will be?’”
Lakshmi's voice became quieter.
“She said she would stay with us.”
Suresh nodded.
“And if we weren't there anymore…”
Lakshmi hesitated.
“She said she'd stay with Kavitha.”
Suresh smiled faintly.
“That makes sense.”
“No.”
Lakshmi looked at him.
“She didn't say she'd live with Kavitha as her sister.”
Suresh's expression changed.
“She said she'd live wherever Kavitha allowed her to.”
A pause.
“She even said she'd work as a maid or nanny if necessary.”
Suresh stared at his wife.
For several seconds, he couldn't find a response.
Lakshmi continued.
“She wasn't saying it to hurt us.”
“I know.”
“She said it calmly.”
Suresh slowly looked toward the stairs.
“She really believes she can live like that?”
“I think she believes she can survive anything.”
That sentence stayed between them.
Kavitha finally spoke.
“Amma…”
Lakshmi turned.
“What?”
“She's not pretending.”
Lakshmi nodded.
“I know.”
“She really thinks she can survive without us.”
Suresh's face tightened.
Lakshmi continued before he could speak.
“And there's something else.”
“What?”
“Today she told Kavitha something.”
Suresh waited.
“She asked Kavitha to call her ‘akka’ when she's wearing women's clothes and ‘anna’ when she's wearing boys' clothes.”
Suresh looked toward Kavitha.
“You agreed?”
Kavitha nodded.
“Yes, Appa.”
“And?”
Kavitha looked toward the stairs.
“I don't care anymore.”
Suresh's eyes softened.
“What do you mean?”
“She is my Anna.”
A brief silence.
“Or akka.”
She shrugged.
“I don't care.”
Lakshmi smiled sadly.
“That is exactly what I told her.”
Suresh's phone suddenly rang.
He pulled it out.
The number was from the college.
His expression changed.
“Hello?”
He listened.
“Tomorrow?”
Another pause.
“Both of us?”
He looked at Lakshmi.
“Okay.”
He ended the call.
“What happened?” Lakshmi asked.
“The committee wants us at the college tomorrow.”
“Both of us?”
“Yes.”
“Did they say why?”
“No. They only said it was important.”
Lakshmi nodded slowly.
“Whatever it is, we'll face it.”
Suresh looked at her.
“But should we tell Archana?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Lakshmi glanced toward the stairway.
“She'll start worrying immediately.”
Suresh understood.
Kavitha spoke quietly.
“Amma is worried that if Anna knows, he'll cry again.”
Lakshmi nodded.
“Yes.”
Suresh looked surprised.
“Cry?”
Lakshmi sighed.
“These days she cries over everything.”
“Everything?”
“Even a small angry look from me.”
Suresh fell silent.
Lakshmi continued.
“Sometimes I don't even say anything.”
She looked at her husband.
“I just look at her seriously.”
“And she gets frightened?”
“She panics.”
Kavitha nodded.
“I've seen it.”
Suresh rubbed his forehead.
“Arjun never used to be like that.”
Lakshmi smiled sadly.
“Arjun would face everything.”
“He would argue.”
“He would fight.”
“He would make mistakes and still walk into the room like nothing happened.”
Suresh nodded.
“He was fearless.”
Lakshmi looked toward the stairway again.
“But Archana…”
She struggled for the right words.
“She behaves like she's walking on eggshells.”
Suresh said nothing.
“One angry look.”
“One harsh word.”
“Even a raised voice…”
Lakshmi's eyes became wet.
“And she starts worrying that she's done something wrong.”
Suresh stared at the ground.
For months, they had told themselves that fear was part of the punishment.
That losing confidence was part of teaching responsibility.
That discomfort would make their son understand what he had taken for granted.
But now they were seeing something else.
The fear had stopped being a lesson.
It had become part of her personality.
Suresh finally spoke.
“Then we won't tell her.”
Lakshmi nodded.
“We'll go tomorrow.”
“Whatever the committee wants.”
“We'll face it ourselves.”
Kavitha looked at both of them.
“And we won't let her worry tonight.”
Lakshmi smiled.
“No.”
She looked toward the stairs.
“Let her sleep.”
The three of them remained on the terrace for another moment.
Below them, the house was quiet.
Archana was still asleep.
For once, nobody was asking her to get up.
Nobody was giving her another task.
Nobody was correcting her.
Nobody was watching the clock.
She simply slept.
And perhaps that was what frightened her parents most.
Not that she had changed.
But that they were beginning to realize how much she had changed.
