Part 53

The room remained silent after the girl's confession.
Nobody seemed willing to look directly at anyone else.
The committee head slowly closed the file in front of him.
“So,” he said quietly, “we now have a completely different picture of what happened.”
The girl was crying.
Her parents sat beside her, stunned.
One of the witnesses finally spoke.
“Sir… she did give us money.”
The committee head looked up.
“How much?”
The witness hesitated.
Then gave the amount.
Another witness immediately confirmed it.
“So you accepted money in exchange for supporting her version of events?”
Neither of them answered.
That silence was answer enough.
The two friends were questioned next.
At first, they insisted they had only supported their friend.
“We believed her,” one said.
“We thought she was telling the truth,” the other added.
The committee head remained calm.
“Believing your friend is one thing. But after receiving money, repeating the allegation as fact, demanding punishment, and continuing to support the accusation despite inconsistencies—that is something else.”
Neither girl responded.
Their parents immediately became defensive.
“They were only trying to stand beside a girl who said she had been wronged.”
The committee head looked directly at them.
“And standing beside someone does not give you permission to manufacture certainty where there was none.”
He turned toward the witnesses.
“And you three?”
One of the boys lowered his head.
“We shouldn't have done it.”
“No,” the committee head replied. “You shouldn't have.”
The disciplinary officer opened another file.
“The university cannot treat this as an ordinary misunderstanding. There was deliberate corroboration, financial inducement, and a serious accusation that resulted in disciplinary consequences for another student.”
The room became tense again.
The committee announced the preliminary consequences.
The witnesses would be suspended.
Their scholarships and special academic privileges would be withdrawn subject to the university's formal disciplinary process.
The students would also be required to complete mandatory classes dealing with academic integrity, false allegations, witness responsibility, and the consequences of spreading unverified claims.
The two friends would receive separate disciplinary findings based on their individual involvement.
Their parents immediately protested.
“But they were only supporting their friend!”
The committee head looked at them.
“Then they will have to learn that friendship does not remove responsibility.”
The original girl's father finally spoke.
“And what happens now?”
The committee head opened the final section of the file.
“Now we discuss restoration.”
He placed several documents on the table.
“This is a record of the financial and educational consequences that followed the accusation.”
The figures were listed one by one.
College expenses.
Additional academic costs.
Travel.
Accommodation.
Lost opportunities.
Legal and administrative expenses.
The consequences of the disciplinary action.
The committee members had spent considerable time examining what could reasonably be documented.
One member spoke quietly.
“We cannot put a price on humiliation.”
Another nodded.
“Nor can we calculate emotional suffering with mathematical precision.”
The committee head agreed.
“Correct. Therefore, this is not compensation for every moment of suffering. It is a negotiated restorative amount based on the demonstrable losses and consequences arising from the events.”
The figure was finally announced.
The room went still.
The victim's parents stared at the document.
Then they looked at one another.
Even for a wealthy family, it was an enormous amount.
They could pay it.
But paying it would not be painless.
It would affect investments.
Future plans.
Savings.
The financial security they had spent years building.
One of the parents whispered:
“This will take years to recover from.”
The committee head answered without emotion.
“You are fortunate that recovery is possible.”
The family said nothing.
The documents were placed before them.
The agreement required restitution according to the terms established by the committee, formal public apologies, cooperation with the university's corrective process, and completion of the mandatory classes before the students could return under the conditions specified by the disciplinary decision.
One by one, signatures appeared.
The witnesses signed.
The friends signed.
Their parents signed where required.
Finally, the girl's parents signed.
The committee head collected the documents.
Then he looked toward the family.
“There is one more thing you should understand.”
The father looked up.
“The university has considered only the losses directly connected to this case.”
The man frowned.
“What does that mean?”
The committee head turned another page.
“You should be grateful that we have not included the wider financial consequences affecting the university community.”
Everyone stared at him.
“The four of you were associated with the free-lunch initiative that was suspended because of your daughter's actions and the circumstances surrounding this case.”
The room became completely silent again.
“If the committee had attempted to calculate the financial consequences of that suspension as part of this matter, the amount before you could have been considerably greater.”
The family looked at the document again.
For the first time, the enormity of what had happened seemed to reach them.
They were still wealthy.
They would survive.
They would still have homes, businesses, savings and opportunities.
But they would not walk away untouched.
The committee head stood.
“This is not about destroying your family.”
He paused.
“It is about ensuring that wealth does not make accountability meaningless.”
Nobody answered.
The meeting was over.
Outside the room, the college continued with its ordinary Monday routine.
Students attended classes.
Lecturers taught.
People laughed in the corridors.
And somewhere in the college, completely unaware of what had just happened, Archana continued her day.
The committee room door finally closed.
Behind it remained the signed documents, the consequences, and the truth that had arrived far too late for everyone involved.
