Part 54

The committee room slowly began to empty.
The victim, her friends, their witnesses, and their parents had signed the documents accepting the restitution and disciplinary conditions.
One by one, they gathered their belongings and left.
The door closed behind them.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Rohit was sitting rigidly in his chair.
Vikram and Karthik sat beside him, equally exhausted.
Their parents were behind them.
Across the room sat Suresh and Lakshmi.
The committee head looked at the three boys and their families.
“We formally apologise to all of you for what happened.”
Rohit immediately looked up.
His expression was anything but calm.
“What are we telling you from the beginning?”
The committee head remained silent.
“We told you again and again that something was wrong. We asked you to investigate. We asked you to check everything properly.”
His voice grew louder.
“You didn't listen.”
Nobody interrupted him.
“You didn't even properly validate what you were told before acting.”
The committee head lowered his head slightly.
“You are right that mistakes were made in the handling of the matter. We sincerely apologise.”
Rohit laughed bitterly.
“Does money fix it?”
The room fell silent.
The committee head began explaining.
“Since the three of you have already received your transfer certificates and enrolled elsewhere, the university can formally communicate with your new institutions and request that the previous disciplinary findings be corrected. Your academic records can be cleaned accordingly. The restitution will also be transferred to your families according to the agreement.”
Rohit stared at him.
“That's what you think fixes this?”
The committee head stopped.
“We are not asking you to believe that money fixes everything.”
Rohit's voice cracked.
“The three of us will graduate.”
He pointed toward Vikram and Karthik.
“Our families are financially secure. We will recover.”
Then he looked toward Suresh and Lakshmi.
“But our reputation?”
Neither of them spoke.
Rohit continued.
“You trusted this institution.”
He turned toward Suresh and Lakshmi.
“And you trusted the punishment procedure.”
Suresh remained silent.
Rohit's eyes became wet.
“And our Arjun?”
Nobody answered.
“He isn't the same person anymore.”
His voice became quieter.
“You keep talking about records, transfers, restitution and certificates.”
He shook his head.
“You can't put those things back into him.”
The committee head listened.
Rohit continued.
“He went through gender-identity trauma. He lost his sense of himself.”
He swallowed.
“Sometimes he comes home after drinking and tells us, ‘It's okay. I'll face it.’”
His voice broke.
“But last Saturday…”
He paused.
“He cried because he couldn't remove the mehndi.”
Nobody moved.
“He was afraid to explain why.”
Lakshmi closed her eyes.
Rohit looked toward the committee.
“And you want to tell me a payment fixes that?”
The committee head had no answer.
Rohit continued.
“He wanted to perform a classical number.”
He looked at the HOD.
“Instead, he was made to perform that item song.”
The room became painfully quiet.
“You cannot tell me that was justice simply because somebody requested it.”
Vikram's father suddenly stood.
“If this is your idea of justice, then we want the same justice for the people responsible.”
The committee head immediately raised a hand.
“Please sit down.”
But the man remained furious.
“We want accountability for what happened to our children too.”
Rohit touched his father's arm.
“Appa.”
The older man stopped.
Rohit looked back toward the committee.
“Fine.”
Everyone turned toward him.
“If restitution is the only thing the college can legally impose, then we accept it.”
He took a breath.
“But I want something else.”
The committee head waited.
“Public accountability.”
“What exactly do you mean?”
“I want all six people who participated in this to give a public apology.”
The room became still.
“Tomorrow. In the college assembly.”
The committee head frowned.
“And?”
“Their disciplinary findings should remain permanently recorded according to university policy.”
He paused.
“And I want the institution to publicly acknowledge its own failure.”
The HOD looked at him carefully.
Rohit continued.
“The apology should be recorded.”
He looked directly at the committee head.
“And published through the official university channels, subject to whatever publication rules apply.”
The committee head exchanged a glance with the HOD.
“There is more,” Rohit said.
The HOD sighed.
“What now, Rohit?”
Rohit looked toward him.
“The free-meal initiative.”
Everyone became attentive.
“That initiative was funded by our four families.”
He pointed toward himself, Vikram and Karthik, then toward Arjun's family.
“It was stopped because of everything that happened.”
The HOD stared at him.
“I want the assembly to explain that properly.”
“Rohit—”
“The students should know why it stopped.”
His voice was firm.
“And they should know that Arjun's family's financial support was withdrawn as part of the punishment process demanded by the people who made the accusation.”
The HOD leaned forward.
“What exactly are you trying to do?”
Rohit answered immediately.
“Social justice.”
The words hung in the room.
Suresh and Lakshmi remained completely silent.
They understood something that the others hadn't.
Their son had suffered the punishment.
They had supported the institution.
They had accepted the decisions.
And now they were seeing the consequences of that decision themselves.
The committee head attempted to explain.
“We will do what we can within the university's authority.”
Suresh quietly picked up the document.
He signed.
The committee head looked surprised.
Suresh placed the pen down.
“You have already done enough.”
The room fell silent.
Lakshmi looked toward the committee head.
“One question.”
“Yes?”
“So Arjun can officially return to normal now?”
The committee head nodded.
“Yes. All of the procedures imposed on him have been withdrawn. Officially, he is free.”
Lakshmi exhaled.
For the first time that morning, there was a hint of relief on her face.
But the HOD did not look relieved.
“I don't think it's that simple.”
The committee head turned toward him.
“What are you referring to?”
The HOD looked down at the files.
“You heard Rohit's description.”
He paused.
“This isn't about clothing anymore.”
Everyone listened.
“For months, Archana has been subjected to procedures, expectations and punishments that have gone far beyond a costume or a college performance.”
He looked at Lakshmi.
“When I spoke to Archana recently, I was trying to understand her current state.”
He chose his words carefully.
“What I understood was that she currently seems emotionally detached from romantic or sexual attraction altogether.”
Nobody spoke.
“She doesn't seem to experience attraction toward men or women.”
The HOD continued.
“Whatever has happened during these eight months appears to have affected her much more deeply than we understood.”
Lakshmi's eyes filled with tears.
“We did this too.”
Suresh looked at her.
She lowered her voice.
“We are responsible too.”
The committee head slowly nodded.
“The official procedures imposed on Arjun are withdrawn.”
He opened a drawer and removed a key.
“The key can be returned to the family.”
He placed it on the table.
“From this moment forward, Archana is not required to follow those procedures.”
He looked toward Lakshmi.
“She can decide who she wants to be.”
Lakshmi reached for the key.
“We will take care of her.”
The HOD nodded.
“And the college will support her.”

A few minutes later, the committee members began leaving.
At almost exactly the same time, students were coming out of their classrooms.
Archana stepped into the corridor with several girls.
She noticed her parents immediately.
Rohit, Vikram and Karthik were standing nearby.
Archana looked from one face to another.
“Why are you all here?”
Nobody answered immediately.
She became nervous.
“Are we in trouble again?”
Rohit immediately shook his head.
“No.”
Archana looked confused.
“We're here to correct it.”
“Correct what?”
“Everything.”
She stared at him.
Her confusion only increased.
Rohit gave her a tired smile.
“Your parents will tell you.”
He glanced at Suresh and Lakshmi.
“We'll call you later.”
Archana remained puzzled.
Rohit, Vikram and Karthik slowly walked away with their parents.
Suresh turned toward his daughter.
“Come, ma.”
He walked toward the car.
Archana followed for a few steps, then stopped.
She looked toward him.
“Appa…”
“Yes?”
“I'm supposed to go by bus.”
Suresh stopped.
For a moment, he simply looked at his daughter.
Then he opened the car door.
“Please, ma.”
His voice was completely different from the one she had become accustomed to hearing.
“Get in.”
Archana stood there silently.
She had no idea what had happened inside that room.
She only knew that something had changed.
And for the first time in months, nobody was telling her what she was supposed to do.
She slowly got into the car.
Suresh closed the door gently.
Then he walked around to the driver's seat.
Neither father nor daughter spoke.
The car pulled away from the college.
And Archana kept looking through the window, trying to understand why everything suddenly felt different.
