Part 55

Archana sat silently in the back seat.
She kept looking through the window.
Something had happened.
She knew that much.
But she didn't know what.
She wanted to ask her father.
Several times she almost opened her mouth.
But she stopped herself.
What if they didn't want to tell her?
So she remained quiet.
After a few minutes, she finally spoke.
“Appa?”
Suresh looked at her through the mirror.
“Yes, ma?”
“Can we go to the temple?”
He was surprised.
“Temple?”
Archana nodded.
“I've wanted to go for a long time.”
There was something almost childlike in her voice.
For months, the restrictions imposed on her had made even ordinary outings difficult. Essential travel was permitted. Going somewhere simply because she wanted to go was not.
Suresh looked at Lakshmi.
Lakshmi looked back at him.
Then Suresh smiled.
“Of course.”

They stopped near one of Chennai's old Vishnu temples, tucked away from the main road and mostly known to local residents and regular devotees.
The narrow street made parking difficult.
“Archana, you go ahead,” Suresh said. “We'll park and come.”
She got out near the temple entrance.
She stood there peacefully for a moment.
Then she heard someone call her name.
She turned.
A group of young women were coming out of the temple.
One of them stopped dead.
Her expression changed.
It was someone Archana knew.
Her former girlfriend.
The relationship had lasted only around eight months.
They had broken up because their expectations were completely different.
She loved adventure, expensive outings and spontaneous plans.
Arjun had always been much more cautious.
From outside, he and his friends looked like people who were always ready for excitement.
But at home, Arjun was responsible.
He thought about money.
He worried about safety.
And he usually wanted his parents to know where he was going.
His ex had interpreted that as weakness.
She had repeatedly tried to push him into spending money to prove that he loved her.
The final argument had been over a weekend trip to Bengaluru with her friends.
She wanted them to drive.
Arjun had objected to the unnecessary expense and suggested the Vande Bharat train instead.
She had become furious.
The argument escalated.
Eventually she insulted his parents.
Arjun slapped her.
The relationship ended that day.
Now she stood in front of him again.
But this time she wasn't looking at Arjun.
She was looking at Archana.
A smile slowly appeared on her face.
“Well,” she said.
Archana simply looked at her.
The girl began talking.
At first it was sarcasm.
Then insults.
She mocked the transformation.
She mocked Arjun's appearance.
She deliberately used humiliating language and made comments about Archana's identity.
She seemed to be enjoying every second.
Archana didn't respond.
She simply smiled.
The ex became even more arrogant.
“Why aren't you angry?”
Archana continued smiling.
That seemed to irritate her more than an argument would have.
Finally, she pulled out a ₹500 note.
She held it toward Archana.
“Here.”
Archana looked at the money.
“What's this?”
“Do your ritual.”
She laughed.
“Don't you people do those things?”
Archana looked at the note.
Then at her.
She calmly took it.
“Thank you.”
The girl looked surprised.
Archana pointed toward a nearby shop.
“Then I'll need two lemons.”
The girl laughed again.
“Fine.”
Archana bought two lemons.
She performed the simple ritual the girl had demanded, placed one lemon against her forehead, and quietly chanted a few words.
Then she handed the other lemon back.
“Keep this with you for three days.”
The girl rolled her eyes.
She took it only to throw it into the nearest dustbin.
“Done.”
She turned to her friends.
“I'm going to meet my boyfriend.”
She looked back at Archana.
“Hope you enjoy your new life.”
Archana smiled.
“All the best.”
The girl looked momentarily confused.
She had expected anger.
Instead, she walked away.
From a distance, Suresh had seen everything.
He started walking quickly toward his daughter.
But Lakshmi gently caught his arm.
“Wait.”
He looked at her.
Lakshmi was smiling.
“Let's see.”
Suresh didn't understand.
But he stopped.
When they finally reached Archana, Lakshmi looked at her daughter.
“Why were you laughing?”
Archana smiled.
“You saw that, didn't you?”
“Yes.”
“Then why are you laughing? That girl was humiliating you.”
Archana said nothing.
She simply turned toward the temple.
“Come.”
The three of them entered.
After their prayers, they sat quietly along the temple corridor.
The atmosphere was peaceful.
The sounds of bells and distant chanting filled the space.
Eventually Lakshmi asked again.
“Now tell me.”
Archana looked at her mother.
“Why were you laughing?”
Archana smiled faintly.
“Because today is probably the last day she'll look that peaceful and happy.”
Suresh frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Archana looked toward the temple courtyard.
“Tomorrow around eleven, she is going to collapse at college and be taken to the hospital.”
Lakshmi's expression changed.
“How do you know that?”
“She told me enough over the years for me to understand how she thinks.”
Archana paused.
“She'll discover she's pregnant.”
Lakshmi gasped.
Suresh remained silent.
Archana continued calmly.
“Her boyfriend may disappear as soon as he learns about it. If she tries to pursue him legally, she may end up in a long and difficult dispute.”
Lakshmi stared at her.
“And then?”
“That is where her real problem begins.”
Archana's smile disappeared.
“She wants a luxurious life without thinking about what happens afterward.”
She looked down at her hands.
“If she decides to end the pregnancy, there will be medical decisions and consequences she has to deal with. If she decides to continue it, her family may reject her, and she may suddenly have to face financial responsibilities she never prepared for.”
Suresh looked at his daughter.
“Why are you telling us this?”
Archana looked at him.
“Because I know her.”
She thought for a moment.
“She wanted to experience everything immediately. She wanted someone who could give her the lifestyle she imagined. She thought refusing unnecessary spending meant someone didn't love her.”
Lakshmi was still stunned.
“But what if none of this happens?”
Archana smiled again.
“Then keep that ₹500 safely.”
She looked directly at her mother.
“Six months from now, if you see her pregnant and struggling, give it back to her.”
Lakshmi stared at the note in Archana's hand.
“And help her if you can.”
Suresh finally spoke.
“After everything she said about you? After insulting us? Why would you help her?”
Archana looked toward the temple deity.
“Because she is still a human being.”
She paused.
“I don't hate her, Appa.”
Suresh said nothing.
“She wanted to enjoy life without understanding its consequences.”
Archana looked at the discarded lemon in the distance.
“Maybe now she'll learn.”
Lakshmi gently touched her daughter's shoulder.
They sat together in silence.
For once, Archana wasn't thinking about punishment.
She wasn't thinking about the college.
She wasn't thinking about what people called her.
She was simply sitting peacefully in an old temple with her parents.
And the ₹500 note remained folded quietly in her hand.
