By the time they reached home, the evening had already begun to settle over the city. Suresh parked the car. Archana got out quietly and followed her parents inside. Lakshmi looked at Suresh. Neither of them knew how to begin. Finally, Lakshmi gently took Archana's hand. “Come, ma. Sit.” Archana sat on the sofa. Suresh and Lakshmi sat opposite her. For a few moments, there was only silence. Then Suresh began explaining everything. The committee meeting. The confession. The witnesses. The money. The disciplinary action. The restitution. The apologies. The decision to clear Arjun's academic record. The withdrawal of every restriction imposed on Archana. And finally, the key that had been returned to Lakshmi. Archana listened. She didn't interrupt once. When Suresh finished, he looked at her expectantly. “So…” Lakshmi leaned forward. “Aren't you happy?” Archana looked at them. There was no excitement in her face. No relief. No tears. Nothing. “Why should I be?” Lakshmi was taken aback. “Ma…” Archana spoke quietly. “You already told me that we are not going back to what we were.” She looked at both of them. “And I accepted it.” Suresh frowned. “But now everything has been corrected.” Archana gave a faint smile. “What is going to change now?” Neither parent answered. “Nothing.” She looked down. “After everything that happened, do you really think I'm going to suddenly become the person I was before?” Lakshmi's expression softened. Archana continued. “And do you really believe Rohit is the kind of guy who would reject a girl simply because she behaved like that?” Suresh and Lakshmi exchanged a glance. “What do you mean?” Lakshmi asked. “Rohit isn't someone who looks for serious relationships.” Archana smiled slightly. “He likes talking with girls. Spending time with them. Chatting with them. He enjoys their company.” She paused. “But he does the same thing with boys.” Suresh remembered the college events. “The applause. The third song. Everyone dancing around him…” Archana nodded. “Exactly.” “They weren't necessarily doing all that because of a romantic relationship.” She smiled. “Most of that was simply because Rohit is Rohit.” “He's always been clear about himself. He says he's carefree. He doesn't want serious relationships.” Lakshmi thought about what she had heard earlier. “But that girl…” “She couldn't accept rejection.” Archana's expression became serious. “She had already disturbed Prakash.” Suresh looked at her. “Prakash?” “Yes.” “Prakash told her no.” Archana continued. “She couldn't accept that.” “She used boys from her class to attack him.” Suresh's face tightened. “And we fought them.” Lakshmi nodded slowly. “Rohit then warned those boys not to disturb Prakash again.” Archana looked between her parents. “That is where the whole thing started.” She leaned back. “Our families are financially stable.” She paused. “Even after everything, somehow we can survive the losses.” “But what about Prakash?” Lakshmi's expression changed. “He could have lost his degree.” “He could have ended up with a disciplinary record.” “He could have lost his future.” Archana's voice remained calm. “His academic grades are among the best.” “He has an excellent chance of getting placed through campus recruitment.” “He has been planning for years to enter a major corporate company.” She looked at her parents. “Imagine all of that disappearing because of one false accusation.” “And imagine what happens to his mother.” The room became silent. “That is why Rohit was so angry.” Suresh slowly understood. “And that's why he wanted the college to acknowledge the free-meal programme.” Archana nodded. “The scheme helped around 150 students.” “That's the minimum.” Lakshmi looked at her. “And what happens to those students now?” Archana's expression became thoughtful. “They're going to hear that the programme stopped because of what happened.” She paused. “Those students are going to remember who caused it.” Lakshmi understood immediately. “The people who lied will face the consequences from everyone who depended on that programme.” Archana nodded. “Exactly.” She wasn't smiling anymore. “That is what Rohit meant by social justice.” Lakshmi lowered her eyes. “I'm sorry, ma.” Archana looked at her. “Sorry for what?” “For all of this.” Lakshmi swallowed. “What are you going to do now?” Archana gave a small laugh. “Amma…” She looked at her mother. “You don't have to do this anymore.” Lakshmi nodded. “You don't have to follow those rules.” Archana laughed again. “Do you really think I'm still doing this because I'm under punishment?” Both parents looked at her. “That was only day one.” Suresh remained silent. Archana continued. “Do you remember what the HOD told me that day?” Lakshmi shook her head. “He told me not to think of it as embarrassment.” “He told me to wear it like armour.” Archana looked at her own hands. “I kept thinking about that.” “For months.” “What if I really am a girl?” “What if I'm a hijra?” She looked up. “And then I started thinking about what I already have.” “My parents.” “My family.” “My sister.” “A home.” “Food.” “Clothes.” “A place to sleep.” She smiled faintly. “Things I used to take for granted.” “I started thinking about people who don't have those things.” She looked toward Lakshmi. “So I decided something.” “What?” “If this is how I'm going to live, then I'm going to learn how to live it properly.” Lakshmi listened carefully. “I started learning things.” “I learned things about the house.” “I learned things about myself.” “And nobody even told me to do household work.” She smiled. “You never once told me to clean even my own plate.” “Kavitha was the only one who did.” Lakshmi's eyes became wet. “So why did you keep doing everything?” Archana shrugged. “Because I wanted to.” She smiled. “I like doing some of it.” Suresh stared at her. “So nothing is going to change?” Archana thought for a moment. “Something has changed.” “What?” “I have.” The words were simple. But neither parent knew how to answer. Lakshmi finally reached for her phone. “Then I'll call the committee.” Archana looked at her. “And tell them what?” “That you're coming tomorrow in your half-saree.” Archana immediately shook her head. “No, Amma.” Lakshmi stopped. “No?” “I don't want that.” Lakshmi looked surprised. “Then what do you want?” Archana smiled. “You decide.” Lakshmi stared at her. Then she laughed softly. “You know what?” “What?” “I've watched you all day.” Archana looked puzzled. “At the temple.” “When you were walking.” “When you were sitting.” “Every few minutes you kept adjusting your pallu.” Archana looked down shyly. Lakshmi smiled. “Whatever you are…” She reached over and touched her daughter's cheek. “Whatever you wear…” “We don't care anymore.” Suresh nodded. “You don't have to prove anything to us.” Lakshmi smiled through her tears. “We only want one thing.” Archana looked at them. “Be happy, ma.” For several seconds, Archana didn't respond. Then she smiled. Not the nervous smile she had been wearing for months. Not the smile she had learned to use when people mocked her. Just a small, genuine smile. “Okay, Amma.” The three of them sat together quietly. For the first time, there were no rules waiting to be followed. No punishment to complete. No permission to obtain. No role being forced upon her. Only a family trying to understand the person sitting in front of them. And Archana, perhaps for the first time, was trying to understand herself too.
