The assembly hall was unusually quiet that morning.
Every department had been asked to attend.
Students filled the rows, whispering among themselves.
Nobody knew exactly what was going to happen.
At the front of the hall, six students stood together.
Their faces were tense.
One by one, they read their public apologies.
Some students listened carefully.
Others looked confused.
A few whispered to one another.
Most had only heard fragments of the story over the previous eight months.
When the six students finished, they returned to their seats.
The faculty member at the podium stepped forward.
“What you have just witnessed is the conclusion of a disciplinary matter that began approximately eight months ago.”
The hall became quieter.
“The institution received allegations concerning ragging, harassment and inappropriate conduct.”
“At the time, those allegations became connected with a separate accusation involving another student.”
The faculty member paused.
“Following the subsequent investigation, we have determined that significant parts of the information used against the accused students were unreliable and that the disciplinary process did not follow the standard of verification that should have been followed.”
Several students looked at each other.
The faculty member continued.
“Some of the original incidents concerning student misconduct and harassment were unfortunately mixed together with allegations that were later found to be unsupported.”
“That distinction matters.”
The administration representative then took the microphone.
“As an institution, we accept responsibility for failing to maintain a sufficiently clear investigation process.”
“We regret the consequences that resulted.”
“Going forward, complaints will be independently examined, evidence will be verified, witnesses will be assessed, and disciplinary decisions will not be based solely on an allegation before the relevant facts have been established.”
There was scattered applause.
But the hall remained tense.
Then the faculty member returned to the microphone.
“There is another matter we need to explain.”
The students looked up.
“Many of you have noticed that the free-meal programme in the college canteen was discontinued.”
Immediately, murmurs spread through the hall.
Some students looked genuinely upset.
“That programme was originally described as a private charitable initiative.”
“That statement was correct.”
“But during the investigation, we were unable to publicly identify all of the people funding it because the matter was under review.”
“Today, with the consent of those involved and following the conclusion of the investigation, we can clarify the situation.”
The faculty member looked down at the document.
“The programme was funded primarily by four students.”
The murmuring became louder.
“Rohit.”
“Vikram.”
“Karthik.”
“And Arjun.”
Several students immediately reacted.
“Arjun?”
The faculty member continued.
“According to the financial records provided to the institution, Arjun contributed approximately ₹1 lakh every month for the previous three years.”
A wave of astonishment moved through the hall.
“One lakh?”
Someone whispered.
The faculty member continued.
“Rohit, Vikram and Karthik each contributed approximately ₹50,000 per month.”
The hall erupted into whispers.
“That's three lakh rupees every month.”
“Every month?”
“For three years?”
The faculty member raised his hand.
“There is another person who deserves recognition.”
The canteen contractor had also contributed additional funds to expand the programme when demand increased.
“He continued to maintain the quality of the food despite the number of students using the scheme.”
The faculty member paused.
“The administration formally thanks him for that contribution.”
There was genuine applause this time.
Then the mood changed.
“But the programme eventually had to stop.”
The applause disappeared.
“Why?”
The answer appeared on the screen.
The administration explained the sequence.
Rohit, Vikram and Karthik had transferred to other institutions following the disciplinary proceedings.
Arjun remained under the restrictions imposed as part of the punishment.
One of those restrictions had been the withdrawal of financial support from his family.
For approximately eight months, Arjun had not received money from his family under that arrangement.
He travelled using public transport.
He relied on food prepared at home.
He carried water from home and used campus facilities.
He followed the imposed dress requirements.
His activities were monitored.
He performed household responsibilities as required.
He participated in cultural activities under the conditions imposed upon him.
And throughout those eight months, the administration confirmed, he had complied with the procedures imposed upon him.
The faculty member looked around the hall.
“Because three of the principal contributors had left the institution and Arjun's financial contribution had been stopped, the charitable programme no longer had sufficient funding.”
“That is why it was cancelled.”
Silence.
One student stood.
“So the food programme stopped because of the case?”
The faculty member answered carefully.
“The financial circumstances created by the disciplinary proceedings were a direct factor in its cancellation.”
Another student shouted from the back.
“But those students were accused!”
“Yes.”
“And now you're saying the accusation wasn't established?”
“Yes.”
The hall erupted.
Some students were angry.
Others were shocked.
Some simply sat silently, trying to understand what they had just heard.
The faculty member waited until the noise settled.
“There is an important lesson here.”
“An allegation can have consequences long before the truth is established.”
“That is precisely why our investigation procedures must be rigorous.”
The screen behind him changed.
A statement appeared:
THE FREE-MEAL PROGRAMME WILL BE REVIEWED FOR RESTART.
The hall immediately reacted.
Applause broke out.
Students who had depended on the meals began talking excitedly.
Some looked angry.
Others looked toward the six students who had just apologised.
The faculty member continued.
“The apologies delivered today, together with the relevant disciplinary findings and institutional statement, will be made available through the college's official website in accordance with university policy.”
The video recording was uploaded.
The written apologies followed.
Within minutes, students began checking their phones.
The entire story was now publicly documented.
The truth that had been confined to a committee room had entered the college community.
Rohit had demanded social justice.
He had wanted the institution to acknowledge what had happened publicly.
And now it had begun.
Not through revenge.
Not through another punishment.
But through the truth being placed in front of everyone.
The assembly slowly began to disperse.
Students continued discussing the announcement as they walked out.
Some were angry.
Some were sympathetic.
Some were simply stunned.
And somewhere else in the college, Archana still had no idea that the entire institution had just learned what had happened to her.
