Part 60

The assembly announcement became the biggest topic on campus that day.
By lunchtime, almost everyone seemed to know something about what had happened.
Prakash was among the first to explain the situation when people approached him.
He didn't exaggerate.
He simply told them what he knew.
The investigation.
The restrictions.
The transfer of Rohit, Vikram and Karthik.
The fact that they had tried to help Arjun financially through the free-meal programme, only for the restrictions surrounding the investigation to make that impossible.
Soon, students began calling Rohit, Vikram and Karthik themselves.
Rohit handled the questions carefully.
He explained why the meal programme had existed in the first place.
He explained how Arjun had been contributing to it.
He explained that they had wanted to keep helping students but couldn't continue doing so while the college's restrictions were in place.
The more people learned, the more the story spread.
Within hours, the gossip moved through the college like wildfire.
The six students who had been suspended were now socially isolated.
Their families felt the consequences too.
The same business circles that had once made life difficult for Rohit, Vikram, Arjun and Karthik's families had begun distancing themselves from the accused families.
It wasn't identical to what had happened during the previous eight months.
This time, however, the families on Rohit's side knew exactly where to draw the line.
They didn't spread fabricated stories.
They didn't threaten anyone.
They simply made sure the documented facts were known wherever business relationships were concerned.
The consequences were immediate.
Eight difficult months had left scars on all four families.
But they had survived.
Now the families who had helped create that pressure were experiencing their own social and professional isolation.
Meanwhile, another story was spreading among the girls.
A very different one.
Archana's classmates began talking about what she had actually gone through.
They spoke about how differently she behaved after the punishment began.
How carefully she moved around campus.
How she had endured public harassment at the bus stand after work.
How she had taken on housekeeping responsibilities at home.
How she had cleaned bathrooms and done work nobody had expected her to do before.
They talked about how strict her parents had become.
And, strangely, the story that affected the girls most was the smallest one.
The mehndi.
How Archana had become frightened because she couldn't remove it.
How she had cried.
How something that would normally have been insignificant had become a source of fear because she believed she was violating the rules imposed upon her.
The girls who heard these stories no longer knew quite how to treat her.
They felt sorry for her.
They admired her.
They were curious about her.
And some simply wanted to make sure she knew she wasn't alone.
The following morning, Archana followed her usual routine.
Lakshmi watched her getting ready.
“Ma, we can hire someone for the housework.”
Archana shook her head.
“Why?”
“You don't need to do everything anymore.”
Archana smiled.
“If you want to pay someone, give me the money.”
Lakshmi laughed.
“You've become very clever.”
Archana smiled back.
“Then let me handle it.”
Lakshmi shook her head.
“Go and get ready.”
Archana did.
For the first time since the restrictions had begun, she did not sign herself into the old monitoring procedure.
She didn't hand over the key.
She kept it with herself.
But she still dressed almost exactly as she had been dressing before.
Today she chose a saree.
Lakshmi had suggested something more modern.
Archana refused.
“Let me see how everyone reacts.”
Lakshmi raised an eyebrow.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Archana adjusted the saree carefully.
Lakshmi helped her with the details.
A clip-on jhumka.
A small rose clip on the right side of her hair.
A flower garland.
Instead of the black-beaded chain Archana had been wearing, Lakshmi put a gold chain around her neck.
Six glass bangles on each hand.
Two simple rings.
One on each hand.
Nail polish on her fingers and toes.
A silver anklet that made a noticeable sound whenever she walked.
Finally, Lakshmi applied neat makeup suitable for college.
She stepped back.
“Finished.”
Archana looked at herself.
She smiled.
Lakshmi picked up the car keys.
“Take the car.”
Archana hesitated.
“The car?”
“Yes.”
“But…”
“No restrictions.”
Archana stared at the keys.
After a moment, she took them.
It had been a long time.
The car was still maintained perfectly.
Nothing had changed mechanically.
But holding the keys felt strangely unfamiliar.
She drove to college.
The moment Archana entered the parking area, students noticed her.
Heads turned.
Conversations paused.
Some students stared.
Archana immediately lowered her head.
She watched her steps carefully.
Every few seconds, she glanced around.
A few students tried to speak to her.
She responded with a small nod.
“It's okay.”
And continued walking.
One student finally stopped her.
“Archana…”
She looked up.
The boy looked embarrassed.
“I… I'm sorry.”
She stared at him.
“I didn't understand what was happening before.”
Archana smiled gently.
“It's okay.”
He hesitated.
“I don't even know what I'm supposed to call you now.”
Archana's smile became slightly mischievous.
“You can call me whatever you normally call me.”
The boy looked confused.
Archana laughed softly.
“Just call me ‘Pottai, Ombodhu or Ussu’.”
He stared.
“Those are your favourite, right?”
The boy was stunned; his face darkened, and he moved silently.
The awkwardness between Archana and the boys was still there.
Nobody quite knew what the correct behaviour was anymore.
Should they treat her like before?
Should they apologise again?
Should they ignore what happened?
Should they talk normally?
Nobody knew.
But slowly, the awkwardness began turning into something more ordinary.
When Archana finally reached her classroom, the girls immediately noticed her.
There was a collective gasp.
Then several voices shouted together.
“Archana!”
She stopped.
“What?”
One girl looked her up and down.
“Did your family arrange your marriage?”
Another laughed.
“You look like a bride!”
Archana's face immediately turned red.
“Stop it!”
The girls laughed louder.
Archana tried to hide her face.
“This is my first day after the restrictions.”
She adjusted her saree.
“So I thought I'd wear one and see what everyone thinks.”
The girls began howling again.
“You look beautiful!”
“Seriously!”
“Bride Archana!”
“Enough!”
Archana was laughing now despite herself.
She shook her head.
“You people are impossible.”
She walked toward the last bench.
The same bench.
But today it was different.
It wasn't a place where she had been isolated.
It was the girls' side.
Her friends had moved the bench there for her.
Archana sat down.
The girls gathered around her.
For once, nobody was asking her to prove anything.
Nobody was giving her instructions.
Nobody was telling her what she was allowed to wear.
She simply sat there among the girls, adjusting her saree and trying not to smile too much.
And somewhere outside the classroom, the college was still talking about what had happened.
But inside that last row, Archana was beginning to experience something much simpler.
Normality.
To be continued…
