Part 61

The rest of the college day passed almost normally.
Almost.
Archana attended her classes, took notes, spoke with the girls, and followed her routine.
The only difference was the attention.
She could feel people looking at her wherever she went.
But not every look was the same.
Some students looked at her with sympathy.
Some were genuinely curious and trying to understand what had happened.
Some looked at her almost as though she belonged to an entirely different world.
And some looks made her uncomfortable.
Those were the ones she hated.
She could tell when someone wasn't looking at her face.
She noticed where their eyes lingered.
She noticed the glances toward her figure.
She hated it.
But she said nothing.
During lunch, one of the girls noticed her expression.
“Don't worry about them.”
Archana looked at her.
“It's easy for you to say.”
The girl smiled.
“Take it as appreciation.”
“Appreciation?”
“People think you're beautiful.”
Archana rolled her eyes.
“That's not exactly comforting.”
The girls laughed.
“You'll get used to it.”
Archana wasn't convinced.
But she smiled anyway.

That evening, Archana drove home.
On the way, she called Kavitha.
“Where are you?”
“Just coming out.”
“I'll pick you up.”
She collected her sister.
They stopped at a few shops and bought snacks and some fruit.
Before leaving, Archana noticed a flower seller.
“Wait.”
She bought a fresh jasmine garland.
Kavitha smiled.
“For Amma?”
“Yes.”
They reached home together.
But there was an unexpected surprise.
Suresh was already there.
The clock showed 5:30.
Archana stopped at the doorway.
“Appa?”
Suresh turned.
“Yes, ma.”
She looked at the clock again.
“You're home?”
Kavitha laughed.
“That's early for him.”
It had been a long time since Suresh had returned before nine.
Usually he arrived exhausted, ate dinner quietly, and went to bed.
Today was completely different.
He looked energetic.
Happy.
Almost carefree.
Archana studied him for a moment.
“You look very happy today.”
Suresh smiled.
“I am.”
She didn't ask further.
Instead, she went into the kitchen and prepared tea.
She placed the fruit in the refrigerator and handed the jasmine garland to Lakshmi.
Lakshmi smiled.
She divided the garland carefully.
Two parts for herself.
One part for Archana.
One for Kavitha.
She placed two sections in her own hair and handed the remaining flowers to her daughters.
The simple gesture made the house feel warm.
They sat together with tea and snacks.
For a while, nobody talked about the college.
Nobody mentioned the committee.
Nobody discussed the investigation.
It felt almost like an ordinary family evening.
Eventually Archana asked:
“What should I make for dinner?”
Suresh looked at Lakshmi.
Then at his daughters.
“Nothing.”
Archana blinked.
“What?”
“You two don't need to cook tonight.”
Lakshmi smiled.
Suresh continued.
“Your mother and I are going out for dinner.”
Archana looked surprised.
“You're going out?”
“Yes.”
“Just the two of you?”
“Yes.”
Kavitha immediately grinned.
Archana tried to hide her own smile.
Suresh continued:
“You girls make whatever you want.”
“Eat.”
“Go to bed.”
“And don't wait for us.”
Archana looked at him innocently.
“What happened?”
Suresh laughed.
“Nothing happened.”
“You've suddenly become very happy.”
“Can't I be happy?”
Archana smiled.
“Of course you can.”
She looked at Lakshmi.
“You both haven't gone out like this in a long time.”
Lakshmi gave her daughter a warning look.
Archana immediately raised both hands.
“Okay, okay.”
Suresh picked up his keys.
“Come.”
Lakshmi stood.
As they walked toward the door, Archana called after them.
“Have fun!”
Lakshmi turned around.
“Take care of your sister.”
“Yes, Amma.”
The door closed.
Archana and Kavitha looked at each other.
Kavitha burst out laughing.
“So…”
Archana laughed too.
“Don't say anything.”
“I'm not saying anything.”
“Good.”
“What are we eating?”
Archana thought.
“What do you want?”
“Pasta.”
“Fine.”
She went into the kitchen.
A little later, the sisters sat together with plates of pasta.
They talked about college.
They laughed about the girls teasing Archana.
They discussed the strange reactions she had received that day.
Eventually, the conversation faded.
They cleaned up and went to bed.
For Archana, it had been an ordinary day.
College.
Stares.
Friends.
A car ride.
Flowers.
Dinner.
Family.
Nothing extraordinary.
And yet, beneath that ordinary evening, something important had quietly changed.
Her parents were no longer treating her life as a punishment to be managed.
They were beginning to treat her as their daughter again.
And perhaps that was the most important change of all.
